am i over reacting?

I just got back from the opticians and was told I need glasses.

To me, this is the worst news in the world. I already feel as if I am hideuously ugly and this will only make things worse. Not that I think people with glasses are ugly or anything, its just I hate my appearance already and to me, me having to wear them will make me look even worse. I feel so down.

In fact, I just downed 450mg of Lyrica as it made me feel pretty euphoric at 300mg a few nights ago. I think I'm gunna go get some coke too.

Its like anything bad that happens makes me feel like total shit and I stop caring about anything. I'm sure people think 'just get oiver it, loads of people wear glasses' but to me its the worst thing in the world.

Both are effective and unnoticeable. Laser eye surgery is incredibly effective.

Glasses aren't that big a deal, but I do understand your hangups about this. Use contacts until you have enough money for laser eye surgery.

I did ask about contact lenses, but he seemed to be really reserved about the idea. He said 'we could try you on contact lenses'. I think one of the problems is i spend an AWFUL lot of time at the computer and he said I would not need to wear the glasses when using a computer.

Do you wear them yourself? if so, how is it putting them in/taking them out? I hate the eyedea (does that count as a pun? ) of having to touch my eyeball! eek!

I've got no eyedea about it as I don't wear glasses, but I was a star pupil when learning about it in school. The laser technology is very heyebrow and i would h-eye-ly recommend looking into it as its out of sight.

I have put in lenses before though, ones that change your pupil size, it isnt as bad as you think.

Wearing glasses at home infront of the computer surely isn't that big a deal as nobody is around. Then as soon as you leave the house, put your contacts in. All this whilst saving for laser surgery. PRBLMSLVD

I may or may not notice if somebody wears glasses, but it will definitely leave my mind within a second and I won't think twice about it. Some people can actually look more attractive if they wear glasses that suit them well.

But regardless I think this is more an issue of self-acceptance. If glasses make you feel this way then it is likely that there are lots of other things that you are hard on yourself about. There is no right way to look or be, so just look and be yourself.

I dont have a healthy attitude about the way I look but despite this I try and accept myself because A) I know this is the right thing to do. B) The alternative is to hate myself and no-one can fix that but myself and C) I also know that in not accepting myself, I actually wont accept others(not truly, one tends to think everyone else has it better than them and it's kinda egoistic, it's another way of making yourself feel 'special' and 'different'). I really dont mean to be harsh but Im just telling you what I tell myself.

You have to accept yourself, on some level, to feel balanced and alive...there is no 'if's' or but's about it, even if you 'feel' 'ugly' it doesnt make you ugly(there are pressures(both internal and external) creating this illusion and they are wrong- not you! You are perfect as you are, if you or anyone else cant accept that it is a problem- that is the problem! Not what you look like. Besides I'm sure that there are plenty of attributes(not necessarily physical) that you have that you can use to nurture your sense of self

If you dont measure up to your own or Society's standards then that isn't a valid reason to chastise yourself, this is cruel and useless masochism. Learn to fight this masochism, otherwise it will keep on bullying and abusing you. Accepting yourself is a good investment, it will make you feel strong in the long term, something which no substance can realistically help you achieve. It can be hard work but it is definitely worth the struggle, I genuinely can vouch for that! Im not all happy- clappy but when I look back on all the years I sold my sense of self to meet some ridiculous, unrealistic, standards I had imposed on myself, I am in a much better position now because of embracing Self-Acceptance as the only way forward.

I would suggest a daily/weekly/monthly dose of making yourself go out with your glasses on in an effort to realise how it really doesnt make a difference to anyone and how you yourself, are contributing to your own unhealthy self judgement.
In this way you can challenge your low self esteem, by staring it in the face and seeing how whats really 'ugly'; are those feelings you are letting take you over..

Of course we all want to be attractive but most people are so caught up in their own lives to even notice us(the way we think they do!) 90% of the time, if even that. Even really attractive people dont have some license to feel good all the time, sure they may have people clambering to sleep with them but realistically, that alone, doesnt a happy life make!
So be honest with yourself about how your feeling etc..dont always pin the blame of your problems solely on how you look because you might be sabotaging your chances of dealing with the real issues that are obstructing your quality of life.
I hope you challenge this state your in, for yourself. You relly dont deserve to treat yourself this way hun.

i dunno. i love glasses. i was always jealous of my sister cause she got em and i didnt.

i just think its really not that bad. life could always be worse. and like someone else said, theres other options to the whole glasses thing [lasik, contacts, etc.]

Some people look fantastic in glasses and others just look normal (as in, not a change in perceptive appearance). I've never seen anyone look god awful, or any less than they normally look. It really isn't that big of a deal, especially since there are other options, like contact lens or corrective surgery. Though, I do understand that the fact that you need glasses, or any sort of correct lenses can be a bummer, it is just something you learn to deal with. I have pretty bad eyes (though not necessarily in comparison to others I know), -5power. It is just a part of life no matter how frustrating it is that I will for the rest of my life (unless i get corrective surgery) have to deal with putting contact in and wearing glasses from time to time, when you get in to the routine, it isn't a big deal.

Also, you shouldn't be concerned about what others think, especially when it comes to wearing glasses. I'm assuming you aren't in highschool, noone is going to be giving you shit. People aren't going around thinking, "oh hey look at that dude, he wears glasses, FOUR EYES".

And why knows, you may look good with glasses on. I recently got a new pair after I haven't had one for two years, and man, I actually look surprising good with them on.

Wooger, glasses wont negatively effect your appearance as much as you think they will. Especially if you get glasses that flatter your face. As a matter of fact, the right kind of glasses can enhance your appearance.
I recently had to get glasses for driving. I wore glasses as a kid, but stopped when I got older. When I was younger and had to wear them, I felt that I looked like a nerd. But after I got them recently, I'd seem to get alot of positive attention whenever I had them on.
So now I sometimes wear them out even when I'm not driving. They're like an accessory and give me a different, but apparently equally as attractive look as not having them.

Contacts aren't suitable for some eye problems, although the technology is improving all the time.

I really hated when I had to start wearing glasses for things other than reading and computer work but now I feel naked without them.

Anyway, I checked my prescription the optician gave me - he ticked the box for contacts instead of glasses :D I guess this is cus he said 'we could try you on contacts'

Anyway, I have been high on lyrica for about 8 hours now, probably taken around 500-550mg (I took a booster dose of around 100mg about 3 hours ago).

Anyway, my blood pressure is sky high, something like 155/100. Not great.

I think I am gunna flush the rest of it I have as I can see myself becoming easily addicted to this stuff, within about 12 days of beating a MAJOR addicition to alcohol.

I dont know why but something is stopping me from flushing them, its almost as if I need to have a cruch near by cus I can't handle life I think I need someone to just tell me to flush them or something.

Asclepius - you have great insight and I think you are completely right, I think i will raise some of the points you made at my next counselling session on Friday - the same day my new rowing machine arrives - i'm quite excited about friday! :D
