Am I being naughty?

Yep, my doc wanted to give me a year's worth of mirtazepine instead the strip of valium I requested after losing my Dad. They're still sat in my drawer untouched.

I bought some pyrazolam instead and I'm proud of the fact that I only ever needed to take three in the year or so I've had them. Benzos can be very effective when used appropriately.

Not true in my case and I suspect not in plenty others too. SSRIs have the same effectiveness as placebo in trials.

In some trials, yes. The trials in which SSRIs seem to significantly underperform tend to use groups who are just being treated for nonspecific 'depression' and 'anxiety', which in many cases aren't really suited to SSRI treatment anyway.

They're certainly overprescribed, but they are undoubtedly effective for some. Too effective in some cases.

Read Prozac nation - came out 10 years or so ago, nails it- awful drug that fucks up your brain chemistry possibly permenently.
On the subject of introducing ones Pa to drugs my ol man asked me why i smoked dope (i was about 17 or so) and what it felt like and i said the only way of knowing was to try and to my amazement he agreed so i loaded up a pipe for the two of us which he proceeded to smoke all of it. He went bright red as did his eyes 20 minutes later said he was hungry and made the biggest sandwich Ive ever seen. I asked him what he thought about it - as he obviously very stoned - and he said he didnt feel a thing and went to bed. Never spoke about again.

=D

Wonder if he then went on to lead a secret double life as a midnight toker. I've often wished I could dose MamaSham with a thing or two (obviously I never would cos she would never even consider such a thing) cos I honestly think it would do her some good. Specifically MDMA and possible a psychedelic of some description. She has a mortal fear of psychedelics in particular. She actually suggested my slight facial paralysis was as a result of taking acid recently (she got quite thoroughly corrected on that for obvious reasons) and simply does not believe that those old myths are actually simply myths. All that stuff about it staying in your system forever, having intense flashbacks whilst crossing a road is a clear and present danger, once you take acid you will probably never come back from it and will always be "a bit funny in the head" - it's all proven FACT! as far as she is concerned. Admittedly her brother genuinely did jump out of a window and die after taking acid one time. She glosses over the fact he had been suffering from more than one (pre-existing) mental health issues for a number of years and had taken acid a fuckload of other times and had apparently been suicidal for quite some time before actually doing it. I tend to think he just wanted to go out feeling good and at peace with the world. Neither of us will ever know of course cos we weren't in his head and he's not telling now. I guess I can see where she gets her somewhat odd ideas about acid from but I can't help thinking a decent dose could probably help with a fair few of her lil quirks.

Anyone interested in taking SSRI because their doctor has suggested them might want to consider doing the sort of research we expect of people looking to take RC's & other drugs. Short-term, sure I see little risk. But get stuck on them for more than a month or two & you're seriously fucked. I've done alot of research on Brain Zaps after fucking myself up on an RC (5-mapb blah blah, sorry!) last year, & the single biggest group of sufferers of these horrible things are those who have discontinued SSRI's & SNRI's. Folk who have been on them for 5 or 10 years can end up with brain zaps & other problems for many years following discontinuation.

Be very suspicious of any doctor who denies SSRI's are addictive or habit forming. They are. Long-term use brings permanent changes to the brain not dissimalar I suspect to those brought on by heavy MDMA use. They're also, as Shambs pointed out, rarely actually effective or useful, even for the depression for which they are most often prescribed! I read most of that which bothered me about SSRI's on here, but I also found rehabilitation groups online that have forums like BL where users discuss diet & other actions that can be taken to help relieve the effects of SSRI Discontinuation Syndrome - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSRI_discontinuation_syndrome

A friend of mine has been on Prozac since it first appeared in the UK. Yet despite having suffered RLS his whole life, only recently diagnosed, his doctor is very wary (& in fact, very good!) about prescribing Benzo's for more than a month at a time. The doctor insists my friend take 10 days off every month or two. The Prozac he takes every day without fail & has said he feels very "wierd" if he misses his dose by even a couple hours! If he ever decides to quit, I reckon it's gonna be a five year taper! 8o

Agreed, Citalopam and Sertraline were both given to me for anxiety and mild depression and both turned me a bit mad after the 2 weeks tester I did of each which is how long they apparently took to start working: close to violent rages, mood swings, suicidal ideation, derealisation, dysphoria and nausea. Weird that weed then works better for me and doesn't have the psychotic side effects.
