Am I addicted to codeine?

Hi guys,

Since July last year I have been consuming up to 32 x ibuprofen and codeine pills sometimes as much as 3 times a week. I know this is stupid and extremely dangerous to the stomach and kidneys, but I can't extract as my parents would see. I would like to think I am not physically dependent on codeine but when I don't take either it or something else (ie. being sober) I feel very depressed and bored and I usually go out and buy a pack of nurofen plus from the chemist. I have no motivation to stop taking these pills as they make me feel good and take away my anxiety, which can sometimes be pretty bad. As soon as I feel anxious I get the temptation to get high as it takes away all my worries and depression. Is there any way I can take these pills without extracting (5000mg of ibuprofen, 400mg codeine) without causing damage? If I just took 32 pills in one session once a month would this still cause damage in the long term? What tips can you guys give me as I simply can't seem to stop taking codeine!

Many Thanks

The thing about internal organ damage is that you'll only know when it's too late. What you're doing is extremely unhealthy and must stop at once. You are definitely addicted psychologically.

You don't take it every day do you?

You need to start extracting it or getting pure pills at least. As for getting of the codeine you can find some threads here on how to deal with it. I for one used to do it a lot but never let myself get addicted. It did fuck with my head and made me a cold bastard who can barely feel emotions.

Preforming a quick cold water extraction is so simple it would be difficult to get caught. A small amount of cold water + water bottle + t-shirt + something to crush the pills with.

It also helps the codeine to kick in faster.

An answer to your question - You probably take enough to have mild to moderate withdrawal symptoms. The only way to find out is to stop for a few days and see how you feel.

No more like twice or 3x a week at the absolute most, i tried to extract dyhydrocodeine once but it got stuck in the filter and the solution didn't make it through. do you think i have done any damage yet? i used to take breaks to stop addiction but now i don't even give a fuck. can't get any pure pills where i live, don't know anyone else that has an opiate habit around here. interesting, when i'm high it makes me more emotional and show more affection to my girlfriend, yet the next day i still feel a bit high yet i feel emotionless. what could cause this?

That's just the result of taking euphoric drugs. You feel great when you're on it, you feel like an exaggerated version of yourself. If you're affectionate normally, you'll be twice as affectionate when high. However, as your brain gets more and more used to that easy fluid flow of positive thoughts, it will naturally have a more difficult time when sober, even if you do feel like the drug is still in your system. By the next day, it has certainly left your system, but you could be left with some residual effects that make you feel "still kinda high" simply because it's a shift from normal perception. Look into receptor down-regulation too.

Perhaps you should get into treatment before your 'not giving a fuck' attitude gets out of control.

Yeah bro. This shit will make you emotionally vacant. Not worth it. It belongs to the family of drugs "not worth doing". Very few successfully do painkillers in moderation. That speaks for itself. Thank god I'm no longer into pharms lol.

Hallucinogens helped me get out of that shit.

I literally lost all feelings for my ex girlfriend being a xanax and codeine fiend. Just made me hollow. Disconnected with all family members and shit. And I was a youth. Still am kinda but I'm happy to say I'm out of it. I tried Hydrocodone and went bonkers man. These drugs are so hedonistic and they make you selfish.

It's like they were made to fuck the population.

Are you "addicted"? That depends on how you define "addiction". There are different definitions out there that emphasise different behaviours and bodily changes. However, I suspect most people would agree that not stopping or cutting down when you know it's doing you harm is a key indicator of addiction. You KNOW those doses of ibuprofen are probably really bad for you, but you continue taking them. So whether or not you decide to identify as "addicted", if you're finding yourself unable to control that, it might not be a bad idea to seek some help.

Since you've asked, and judging by the name you've chosen, I'd say you were 'dependent'... in other words, you feel bad without them? I myself have taken N+ for years, to kill pain... and cheer myself up. They aren't really that dangerous, but are habit forming. I took well over 100 in a suicide attempt - which, as you can see, failed dismally. Not even any liver/kidney damage from the nurofen. I took them daily, usually about ten or so. You seem to be 'bingeing' on them however, which sounds a bit odd to me somehow? I required them every day, to kill pain... and one sure fire way to tell if you are 'adicted/dependent' is to go without for a day, and see if you get an attack of the old Katmandu Quickstep! If you do, you have a problem!

The good news is, I think you'll have little trouble getting off them. The codeine dose is low, and though they are very good painkillers, unless you are in pain, a gradual reduction probably won't boher you much, if at all. Or you can do what I did (NOT recommended!!), bully your GP into prescibing Co-Codamol, which has 30mg of codeine in it, but 500mg of Paracetamol (yuk!), then find a nice, sympathetic Locum and say you're worried about liver damage, taking all that Paracetamol, and get switched to pure codeine. Nurofen and Codeine isn't available on the NHS... what a shame!

Even then, I don't reckon Codeine is all that hard to stop... unless you have a knee, back, head and bowels like me! I now do 42 a week... and incidentally, I only stopped Nurofen Plus because they were so disgustingly, greedily expensive!

When crushing up pills, you need to crush them until they're in powder form.......the whole CWE can be done w/o your parents seeing it.

Would you rather your parents visit you in the hospital for liver/kidney damage?

i dont understand how you can be so complacent about destroying your liver. it is so easy to perform a CWE, i live my parents and i've done it dozens of times.
