Alternatives to Diphenydramine for Insomnia

Hi Guys,

I have a pretty bad insomnia which has plagued me for a while. I just lie there with eyes closed and it takes hours for me to sleep. I will get into bed at 11pm and fall asleep about 3-4am and then be up at 8 to get to school. I turned 18 a few months ago so I took it upon my self to make a doctors appointment to see whats wrong.

I found Diphenhydramine through research a now take about 100mg's most nights. The reason I say most nights is because I don't want to become addicted so some nights I bare the shitty sleep.

The problem with Diphenhydramine is the next morning when I wake up I feel very sedated still even though I have had a solid 9 hours sleep (Take them at 10 asleep by 11) This sedation last for a good 2 hours, its similar to being high. So I was wondering if there were any other options (In The UK) to Diphenhydramine.

Also my Dad suffers from insomnia also and is prescribe Alprazolam (I think) which is under a Private subscription as the NHS don't do it. I really don't want to get hooked on Benzo's so I will probably reject the offer. Since when I am at home during the holidays I have a spliff which usually helps me (though not as well as Dipenhydramine)

Help would be much appericated.

There is another over the counter sleep aid availible here on the uk, it's called promethazine (sp?) it's branded as sominex, don't know if that will feel any different in the morning for you, but could be worth a go! Also you could go herbal an try valerian, can be found in health food shops. Hope this helps you a
bit

I would say take advantage of the fact that promethazine is OTC in the UK. If that doesn't work, I would say you need to look at another class of drugs for your sleep issues.
