I have done quite a bit of searching and maybe i'm looking in the wrong places but I haven't found exactly what I need to know.

1. I am using xanax to mitigate opiate w/ds. How long (on average) of daily use would it take to become even mildly physically dependent on it? lets say at 2-4mgs a day.

2. according to wikipedia the bio-availability of xanax is 80-90%. I am assuming this is orally? is there a way to increase the bioavailability? perhaps sublingual, or even IV? I have heard there is little reason to IV alprazolam but does anyone have experience with this?

3. wikipedia reports a half-life (immediate release) of 11.2 hours. that seems hard to believe considering it is a "short-acting" benzo. what is the actual half-life, or more importantly how long should a benzo naive user expect noticable effects to last from say a 1mg dose?

mods please avoid merging into any megathreads for at least a little while so i can get some decent input. once the threads get merged in its difficult to get any feedback.

thanks!

1. Doing it for more than a week is probably pushing it
2. Don't even try
3. All benzos are very fat soluble = long half life, and there is often a lot of individual variance.

2. Don't even try Seriously, it is a bad idea, their oral BA is very very good, if you want it to hit a bit quicker, use it sublingually.

so with a half life of 11 hours does that mean i am to experience effects for 11+ hours? that doesnt seem consistent with what others have told me

well haven't took any sub in about 24 hours, and i usually have to take at least my daily 0.5mg dose every day... anyways I ended up taking 3 bars (6mgs Alprazolam) tonight. Mainly because 2night ago I didn't go to bed till 10am, and then last night sense i messed up my sleep schedule I didn't go to bed last night till 11am! So i had 4 bars left tonight and have took 3 bars (over a resposible period of time (6pm - 1:10am) so far with about 2 beers.... anyways im just trying to fix my jet lag.. i nnever take xanax unless i have to get to sleep and my insomnia is not letting me... i like it cuz it kicks in fast too (esp. on empty stomach with a gin & tonic :) lol ( anyways... hopefully i can get my sleep schedule back to normal tonight. wish me luck!

Tonight (6pm - 1:10am)
3bars
50mg Diphydramine (benadryl)
15mg melatonin

wish me luck....

SOME people swear snorting it makes it kick in faster and actually works.. From what I know this is not true, xanax can't work snorting cuz it aint water soul able and wont absorb into ur nasal membranes.

half life isnt the same as length of effects. think about it, the half life of thc is like 2-3 days but it only gets you high for a couple of hours.

Half life is the period of time that it takes for a substance to become halved in your system. If you eat 2mg of xanax at 12pm, and it has a half life of 11 hours, than at 11PM there will be 1mg of xanax in your system. At least... that what I thought it was until I just read what I typed. That's how half-life works for radioactivity anyway.

Half-life is the time taken for the blood concentration to fall to half its initial value after a single dose. Alprazolam (Xanax) has a half-life of 6-12 hours, so when you take 2mg there will be 1mg after 6-12 hours still in your bloodstream.

Duration of effects: The speed of elimination of a Benzodiazepine is obviously important in determining the duration of its effects. However, the duration of apparent action is usually considerably less than the half-life. With most Benzodiazepines, noticeable effects usually wear off within a few hours. Nevertheless the drugs, as long as they are present, continue to exert subtle effects within the body. These effects may become apparent during continued use or may appear as withdrawal symptoms when dosage is reduced or the drug is stopped.

Take them either sublingual or oral, all Benzodiazepines have a high Bio-Availability so unless you have one of the few that are water soluble like Midazolam (Dormicum), snorting them is a waste IMO. :\

To answer your question about dependency: All Benzodiazepines should be taken for 2 to 4 weeks max if you want to avoid getting physically addicted and going through Benzo withdrawals.

Check the site I linked to, it's a great Benzo information source. :)

My advice would be to take it easy on the xanax man its got a hell of a withdrawal and you dont want to have to withdrawal from benzos and opiates at the same time cuz that would be horrible. And as far as bio-availibility just eat it or use it sublingually, Ive snorted them before and its a waste cuz if u think about it theres 2mg of alprazolam and like 300mg or so of just straight up binder which is gunna clog up your nasal membranes and you wont even get that much of the good stuff in there, and you don't want to IV pills and it would be kinda pointless with the oral BA being so high, but if you do decide to IV use a micron filter. And half life and duration of effects are not the same things as others have already said.

1. depends on how heavy ur opioid habit is-Xanax habit can in the end be even worse so I would start tapering as soon as the opioid withdrawals get better, i.e. after the 5th day. Just drop .5mg of the Xanax a day and then try to stop it completely after 10 days...things will be unpleasant...have a bottle of wine or so and then after 2 weeks try and throw in a completely drug free day...or 2...or 3.

Sublingual route could SLIGHTLY increase BA.

IV should never be done with alprazolam unless you like devastating blood clots...

Further, I believe that there is not an absolute standard for physical dependence with any drug. It is subjective and varies from person to person.

Another possibility is to Google benzo withdrawal. Pick withdrawal symptoms that can be measured (blood pressure, fever, etc.). You can not magically change those. You will probably know if you are withdrawing.

I would also like to think that mild benzo withdrawal is baby nuts compared to moderate or higher opiate withdrawal.

thanks for all the great input guys, bluelight to the rescue as always :D

i wasn't ever seriously considering IVing, but since people are saying it is not water soluble does that mean it is actually impossible to get any of it in a rig to IV?

always consider rectal ROA as an alternative to IV.
