Alprazolam Anti depressant properties ?

I've heard many times that the only Benzo which could have Anti depressant properties (for moderate depression only) is Alprazolam
but unfortunately without any valid explanations...

Do you have the same feedback and maybe a scientific explaination on that point ? (even it is complicated)

Thanks for any accurate scientific feedbacks (this is clearly not a basic drug discussion...)
 
It is clearly described in "drug description list that is included in every package" that it has antidepressant properties, i saw it many times when was prescribed in Russia. Also my doc told me that it has, but I seriously doubt it, because benzos are depressants.
 
lol tamtoot the benzos are depressants has nothing to do with it. I am not going to explain someone else to it for me please.... btw i find xanax to have some euphoric properties, i would definitely see how it could be used as mild anti depressant.
 
Its antidepressant properties disappear after week or two. I remember those morning where i was leaving my shift job and when i was going to the bus i will pop 1 mg alprazolam and in 15 minutes i felt good mood elevation, but usually i was waking up in the last bus stop passing my bus stop. But after month of using alprazolam i didn't felt any mood elevation, just sedation.
And i didn't felt it when i acquired 10 tablets half a yera ago, just sedation.

When drugs are described as "depressants" what is meant is their action on the central nervous system, not on mood. Many CNS depressants can induce feelings of well-being or euphoria. By contrast "anti-depressant" refers to the effect a drug has on someone's affective state.
 
I understood what you mean.
Benzos are usually prescribed with antidepressants to keep patients calm and so. But prolonged use of benzos can make your depression worse.
Alprazolam is no different.
 
Alprazolam tends to make me way more volatile than other benzos, especially when I black out.

It's pretty bizarre, but Xanax tends to make me angry, Klonopin makes me hypersexual, and Ativan makes me emotional, with all these effects becoming very pronounced when I drink on the paricular benzo.
 
Alprazolam makes me incredibly productive during the time it is coming on. It's like every anxiety, every bit of pain or uncertainty washes away and I'm able to just get up and DO the things I've been putting off for so long. Then I re-dose, get tired, black out, and have fun, lol. But for 1-2 hours after taking it I'm up and about and cleaning the house or doing whatever needs to be done. It's a really interesting effect but I don't think it's stimulation, it's just being totally anxiety free for the first time in ages, as I'm not prescribed benzos anymore, I try to deal with my anxiety day to day even though at times it can be crippling. Use benzos infrequently as a temporary moment of escape and clarity rather than as a daily escape.
 
Alprazolam, compared to other benzos, is one of if not the most potent anxiolytic. Many of those depressed present with comorbid anxiety, and this anxiety and its behavioral consequences can exacerbate or even incite depression.

I agree with this. A big link between anxiety and depression is prolonged excessive stress levels, which benzos would likely be effective to decrease.
 
Alprazolam technically isn't a benzo... and even if it did have AD properties it would be no good for long-term use.
 
Why isn't alprazolam a benzo? I thought it was classed with all other benzos....?
 
I suppose it's technically a benzo derivative rather than a benzo... triazole ring and all that
 
Tsukasa is simply mistaken: the only thing 'wacky' about alpraz's structure is that two of the usual substitution spots joint into a full ring-system, and that's not that wacky.
