so unfortunately i am allergic to paracetamol and therefore usually use ibrupofen but find it doesnt quite cut much pain relief, better as an anti imflammatory so i guess it does have some pain releiving properties,

I usually get codiene phosphate perscribed when im in bad pain but its a pain in the arse going to the docs everytime i wanna get rid of my migraines i suffer from badly (probably due to looking at computer screen for 12 hours plus)

can u get diclofenac OTC?

anyone reccomend some good painkillers (legal of course - or sorf of legal =D)?

Diclofenac is prescription only afaik. If you tolerate those pretty hardcore NSAIDs well you might prod your doc for naproxen too. Is of similar bent (next step up from diclofenac in terms of potency, I think) but is insanely hard on the gut. My doc insists on prescribing omeprazole alongside it to try to limit the damage. I am particularly sensitive to the gut ickinessess though due to longstanding gut issues of various kinds.

OTC stuff is more or less shite. Although aspirin is actually not too bad for headaches. Codeine (and other opies) are actually kinda shite for headaches and migraines - they actually tend to exacerbate or even cause them. Vaguely recall being prescribed one or two antiepileptics when I went through a phase of pretty severe migraines as a yoof. Can't recall which ones but do remember they helped somewhat. Again, maybe worth mentioning to your doc.

Unfortunately you may well have to rely on prescription stuffs for the most part. If your doc is aware of the situation surely he can prescribe enough to have a small stockpile to hand for emergencies?

Diclofenic really does a number on my heart, naproxen kinda has tob e taken alongside omeprazole overwise that shit starts to get painful. You can buy OTC prescription strength voltarol tablets now. Sounds kinda weird but id maybe look into zinc and mangesium supplements as they are supposdedly somewhat anti inflammatory, its even suggested that diphenhydramine has anaglesic propertys but i am unsure to that clam

OTC pain killers in the UK are pretty useless for any kind of serious pain IME.

You don't say what you need the pain relief for so NSIADs may not be suitable anyway, I don't take them since having a stomach bleed.

I would persist with a doctor if you have ongoing pain, mine will do a consultation over the phone to discuss my pain killers and then i just have to pick up the script.

He recently prescribed me some analgesic cream to supplement my oral pain killers which seem to be working out really well, paracetamol does nothing for me unless I have a temperature.

I had some sort of bleeding from my arse/gut when I was taking NSAID's daily...Doctor prescribed me dicloFLEX, supposed to travel through the gut differently to reduce gut issues, but, like Shambles, always prescribed alongside Omeprazole.

Also tried Celebrex which was FUCKING SHIT.

My bleed wasn't triggered by NSAIDs, it was Sertraline and way to much booze:\

I have taken epic amounts of Ibuprofen in the past but that was many years ago.

I'm back on the MST SR at the mo, the 30/500s just don't cut it. My doc seems reluctant to prescribe anything else even though they sedate me more than I would like, we both have concerns about dependence and the slow release stuff seems to make that less of an issue, psychologically anyhow.

I not keen on trying Tramadol for a few reasons, morphine seems to have less side effects and in reality be less problematic IMHO.

i had aspirin the other day for first time, was actually surprised they helped 8o

Pregabalin might be of use? i only heard about them the other day and heard good for GBL wd's but seem to be given to people for pain too

Proper migraines won't respond all that well to general pain killers, Mrs23 was having a bad time with them a while back and got these weird melt things that seemed to stop them in their tracks, made her feel a bit shitty though, sorry can't remember what they were. The doctor said that if they didn't have any effect they it was likely she wasn't suffering migraines.

Sorry I didn't read the thread but PLEASE do not take Declofan / fenic - unless under strict doctors orders. It's fucking horrible drug - that will cause you more problems than solve. I was prescribed it - fast forward a few weeks I was rushed into hospital vomiting blood - AVOID!

wtf :/ im sorry to hear that Bearlove, did they come to the conclusion on what was causing you to vomit blood? i do get them perscribed by the doctor and would like to know more on this

I lasted three days on naproxen before puking blood and cramps got too much. Prescription NSAIDs are nasty fukkers. But omeprazole does seem to make even my poorly belly tolerate 'em as long as I don't take 'em regularly.

Yes it was directly linked to the declo (fen /fenic) - I still to this day don't know why I took it as I knew the dangers/side effects associated with it/compared to the pain relief it actually gives. I was also given something called 'Rantag' (ranitidine) which was 'supposed to protect my stomach lining . It made no difference and when I was talking to the surgeon who did my camera down my throat his first question was 'have you taken' declo *** ..

wow shambles seems that is why these drugs are perscription only then, yeh i dont really take them regularly tbh dont really like masking the pain tbh just hate the pain after a full 12 hours of poker, maybe i should get them glasses and try drink more fluids regularly as its almost entriely to do with poker and nicotine doesnt help :/ maybe i should try mushrooms for my headaches :D though i do seem to passout sometimes from them :/ worrying thing about shrooms and 2ct-7 :/

nothing much more to add than what has been stated above.. but as daft has it sounds - have you tried a bit of weed, maybe a spliff - when your migraines flare up? at the very least, it wont hurt to try

girlything (who's a jr doc) has a few juju techniques to deal with headaches/earaches involving bending of the neck towards shoulder, left or right and massaging knuckles into two spots at base of skull/top of neck... alas i have forgot which one is which, so would have to check - but yes, twelve hours plus looking at a screen is likely to be the main culprite - perhaps looking into different technological solutions (monitor types, anti-headache'y screens for monitors, brightness settings etc) may be a more fruitful way of dealing with the associated afflictions

I found those melt things Mrs23 uses for migraine, Maxalt Melt, Lyophillsates.

She has been much better lately but these seemed to stop a migraine in it's tracks, left her feeling a bit shitty but she reckoned it was a good trade off

Sumatriptan is what you need if you're getting migraines. It's now available OTC, you just have to complete a suitability survey at the pharmacy and you're then given a card that allows you to buy from any other pharmacy. Only downside is that the pills are stupidly expensive, about £8.00 for two. 8o

The fact remains that in the midst of a real migraine, most people would happily pay ten times that for guaranteed pain relief.
