All men play on 10 (METAL THREAD 3.0)

Je-sus. I just got my hands of the promo for Chimaira's new album, Resurrection (due out March 6th). I will not deny that I am somewhat of a Chimaira fanboy, but goddamn, this album is a beast. If their ridiculously good last effort (self titled album) didn't sell you on this band, this will. These guys are also tight as a virgin's box when they play live...can't say enough about this band.

If there was ONE metal album you would play for someone to give them some sort of understanding of the appeal of the genre what would it be?

I've never really understood metal... I love Primus, enjoy some of Tool's stuff (but I have been told neither of these bands are really metal...) So hook it up!

Darkthrone- A Blaze In The Northern Sky, or Transilvaian Hunger for norweigan black metal.

Man real metal takes awhile to get used to, its an acquired taste. As you are exposed to more of it you learn how to listen to it, i.e. losing the basic assumption of vocals as the lead instrument, listening to the progression of melodic shapes instead of trying to pick out individual phrases...

and you ask about the appeal of the genre. There are alotta different genres in metal, and alot of them dont have much to do with the other styles. Even in, say, black metal, you could have a punk-grind band like Beherit which has nothing to do with the musical style of a symphonic band like Emperor, both of which have little to do with a melodic band like Dissection. There's no one album that can sum up metal, just as no one face can sum up the American population. I can tell you that Burzum's Hvis Lyset Tar Oss owns, but if I played it for a person not literate in metal they would just give me a funny look. I would play them some In Flames or somethin kinda mainstream sounding, something with enough familiar musical conventions for a non-metalhead to relate to, but enough metal elements to get them accustomed to the vocals, etc.

Kamelot!

I've been listening to Kamelot's Karma lately. Wow, what a fucking metal record. These guys are so unbelievable. For a taste, check out my MySpace profile's song at www.myspace.com/blackwoodarsenal.

Isn't "Karma" such a bad ass metal tune?

"Who will trade his karma for my kingdom,
A sacrificial rite to render truth,
The fire in my soul rejects my wisdom,
'Cause all you do in life comes back to you."

tbh, and maybe this is wrong, but i pretty much automatically just disregard people that cant "lose the basic assumption of vocals as the lead instrument" as having a mind way too simple and narrowed to even comprehend the simplest aspects of music. this is so easy to bring out in people with metal - the only thing "dumb" people will hear is the vocals and some background noise.

and this is a good overall response, similiar to what i said. metal is way, way too diverse a style of music to be summed up in just one release. heck, an entire discography of any given band (and we all know its typical for metal bands to release 10+ albums) would not even come close. you have to sample lots of it over time.

listening to the more "mainstream" stuff, or stuff thats a bit more "dumb people friendly" (not to say the music is bad, but its music thats acceptable to people who freak out when music does not adhere tightly to the constraints of contemporary mass marketed music) is sort of like going to a chinese resteraunt and eating fried chicken and jello off the buffet. dont go tell your friends how much chinese food sucks when uve never had anything but the bastardized fried chicken.

(note that im using the word "dumb" to represent "numbness/insensitivity to anything unfamiliar")

so where do you start if u really are genuinely interested in learning about metal music (weather you like the music or not is an entire different subject, regardless, its still an extremely interesting musical art form)? id suggest again, just browse through this thread, and the previous two threads (just use search engine constrain to post titles and search for metal), check out anything that ppl in the threads said was a great release, listen to it in full, and then make a post in here about what you think. if you hate it outright, we can probably explain it better and direct you to a sort of metal-sphere-of-influence that might be more to your liking. if you like what youve sampled, then any self-respecting metalhead would be able to instantly rattle off 5 other bands of the same breed and calibur back to you.

Death - Symbolic

possibly my favorite album of all time. its most certainly in my top 5 favorite cds. id reccomend this one for sure to ppl new to metal. as long as you can understand it isnt cracker-jack music crammed into a 3 minute time space for the listener's convenience. this album screams "work of art."

and R O F L @ "tight as a virgin's box," i enjoyed chaimera's last release so ill check this one out. that cover looks like some kinda new video game lol.

and indeli yeah i really dug that other kamelot album u posted in the older metal thread, im gonna have to check out some of their other stuff i hadnt ever heard them previously.

yah i was gonna say this above but i was all ripped and forgot

but i think another good thing to point out is the fact that any band worth a shit doesnt sound like any other band. each metal band brings its own interpretation of the music to the table, while maintaining the fundamental similarities. the vast amount of bands out there, with their own unique styles and sounds, is what causes a need for so much sampling before one can get a firm grip on what kind of styles they like personally, etc.

^nicccccce...

I mentioned that in particular because I noticed that after a few months of gettin into metal when I listened to a new song I would be listening for the lead melody usually in the guitars, or some other instrument, wheras most people listen for the vocals and if its not there they don't really know what to think. I dont think it makes them dumb, just conditioned. If they can't assimilate the idea period, I'd say they're a peg or two down on the brain gain scale.

For gettin into metal tho, like I said, go for mainstream-ish stuff at first... in flames, children of bodom, dimmu borgir, there's a ton of these bands that I don't consider meaningful or very high quality, but they can usually write competent tunes that sound cool with some standout aspects and they are the avenue I took to get into all the stuff im into today.

Speaking of In Flames, I just took another peer through their early work, Lunar Strain, Subterranean, and The Jester Race. Fucking phenomenal! They were incredible back then. They're good now, but not fantastic. They totally lost what made them In Flames -- the whole folk influence.

And, speaking of In Flames side projects, Dimension Zero kicks all sorts of ass. I actually just discovered them, oddly enough. It sounds like At The Gates crossed with older In Flames. And, they're working on a new album. :D

ya know i never really gave in flames a chance, ive heard their discog a few times but i hate their new stuff so bad i never really bothered to aquire their old albums. the only one i actually own is clayman. maybe ill revisit...

woke up listening to Iced Earth's "something wicked this way comes." I dont think ive listened to this cd since it came out many many years ago. I completely forgot how AWESOME this band is. I would definetely reccomend this album for someone new to metal. Iced Earth is a great place to start.

New in flames is easily forgotten... but the album that got me into metal was colony. Sweet album.

DARK ANGEL - Darkness Descends - one of my all time fav thrash albums - up there with Slayers Reigh In Blood.

^ ^ ^
Yes. I think thrash reached perfection in 85/86, as well as those albums you had Kreator's Pleasure To Kill and of course Puppets.
I listen to Dark Angel daily.

^ I agree, was sort of like the peak of thrash...which hasnt really come down much, sort of plateau'd on a slant. Sepultura | Schizophrenia is another masterpiece of those years ill never forget - one of the most brutally heavy albums of all time.

hah yah, HEY JONNY DEPP!!! MONITOR, THE KINGDOM OF THE DELL!!!

i love the flash animated kerry king/jeff hanneman solos...and then when it gets to Dave Lombardo it craps out... (cept im on his side, imo slayer has had their day and grip inc and naturally testament are way better bands to be in)

funnier than Crotchduster's parody of the song, which was still funny on its own lol.

holy shit, that's funny...anyone search their name for other parodies?

I just laughed out loud at their Pantera - Five Minutes Alone parody...some funny ass-shit.

"You waged a war on nerds...But you can't crush the Ken Doll."

It's especially great because some of Phil's lyrics on that track are definitely hard to decipher as it is.

sweet dude, na i personally diddnt think to do that, someone just linked me to the slayer one and naturally this thread came to mind near-instantaneously.
