so is this powdered alcohol actually ethanol of a new variety or another chemical that is metabolized into alcohol?

It was just ethanol adsorbed onto some kind of solid carrier material.

I see. That makes more sense. Still think its odd that this company is taking away the entire "front portion" of their scotch flavor. I say front portion because of how your sinus react to the smell of something as if it was a taste. As an experiment, tape your nose closed and put orange coloring in some water, or even apple juice. Your reaction will surprise you.
