Alcohol...

Word up to the berry smoothie!!

What does your friend drink? Knowing what it is she's drinking could help us formulate better theories.

*If she has drinks mixed with cola she's adding to the dehydration plus getting a lot of caffeine, which can worsen hangovers. A switch to another mixer may help.

*If she drinks rum or sweet drinks, the sugar could be contributing to the hangover. A switch to less sugary drinks, or mixing with a fruit juice (fructose) instead of soft drink (sugrose) might help.

*If she's hitting red wine, the tannins may be causing trouble - some people find they get nasty hangovers from the tannins in wines.

That aside, the basics stand. Berocca, multivitamins and vitamin B supplements all help (though only use one, otherwise you'll overload your system). I usually go the mega-multi vit before going out. Vitamin B helps to prevent hangovers (can't remember the actual process unfortunately), so any B supplement, before or after going out will help.

Eating before bed also helps - alcohol is sugary, thus is rich in quick energy. Eating before bed means you won't put your body through a sudden crash in blood sugar when the alcohol wears off. Bananas are excellent for this as they're easy to eat and gentle on the stomach (and also contain vitamin B!)

Avoid dehydration by keeping up water intake throughout the night, especially if drinking caffinated beverages. Lots of water beofre bed too - makes a world of difference! Also, make sure she eats a proper meal before going out and has breakfast in the morning. Just like with pills, a large part of the comedown can simply be from not eating enough food.

Personally, I find mixing my spirits with fruit juice, specifically citus, means I don't get a hangover. I also drink plenty of water and remember to eat, but I've noticed the biggest difference is what I'm drinking. Beer or a spirit mixed with soft drink = bad; spirit mixed with citrus juice = good (except on the one or two occasions where I've overdone it completely).

Hope this helps!
