I had this for about 2 months and thought I would post some information about it, and how you can get rid of it.
Firstly, it is NOT a mental illness nor is it a sign of brain damage. People who have never taken drugs before suffer from it (just search you tube) and it is a common side effect when you over work your brain. Some people have it for years, some for days, but fundamentally it IS curable but by your actions and your actions alone.
So, lets looks at what is actually is and why it happens. The best description of derealization that I have found is that it is akin to a dolly shot in a movie. This dream like state, or, feeling 'unreal', is actually a defence mechanism your body initiates when the mind becomes overworked. It is in essence, a way for your mind to cope against stressful situations you put it in.
There is a lot of literature about de realization and its medical properties in shaman traditions and some psychologists even believe it is a spiritual experience, that we in the west do not understand since we have nothing like the shamans do to work on, in essence, 'the shaman swims but we drown'.
Once you learn about the condition, and realise it is nothing to do with you going mad or insane the quicker you will recover. EMBRACE THE EXPERIENCE, DO NOT FEAR IT. Go onto you tube and search derealization, and look at the videos people have made after their experiences of it and how they cope. Its the good first steps to recovery. Pete
