My history, since it factors into what I do now:

I was diagnosed with ADD as a kid in 4th grade and took Ritalin for two years till I felt it wasn't working anymore. In my freshman year in high school when I was prescribed Adderall XR which helped a lot both in school and socially. My senior year in high school I started experimenting with hard drugs and began spiralling into addiction to opiates. My doctor took me off the Adderall because of my drug abuse and I stopped going at all.

Fast forward 7 years and I'm still repairing the damage I caused to myself and those around me. I went to rehab two years after dropping out and started suboxone. My new doctor warned me that my opiate use was far beyond anything he'd ever seen, taking 7-8 Oxycontin 80mg throughout a typical day often mixing and matching with heroin, benzos, and weaker opiod pills. As the doctor guessed, suboxone was not effective and I was sent to start methadone maintenance.

Today I still take 100mg of methadone a day. I have some permanent psychological issues now that I am told likely are a result of the constant strain of taking X, doing coke, and anything I could afford for days, even weeks on end. I now have severe depression and panic attacks/anxiety disorders and agoraphobia. I am currently on the following meds: Methadone (100mg/day), Xanax (1mg, three/day), Zoloft (200mg/day), and Synthroid for thyroid problems.

I am drug tested monthly and have not failed a test in two years plus the fact that I no longer have a problem staying away from anything I'm not prescribed. I am in school for computer repair and networking and the downers I have to take make it impossible to stay awake in class. My teacher understands, but I am sick of always being tired and sleeping all the time. I take my methadone after school now to help stay awake, but outside of school its the same.

I have been diagnosed with adult ADHD but have neglected taking anything for it because I dont really like stimulants, but in my current position I think I could kill two birds with one stone by treating my ADHD (thus doing better in school) and benefitting from the "boost" of something like Vyvanse or Adderall.

I keep meaning to bring it up to my psychiatrist but I always get scared she will think I'm just trying to get prescribed another controlled substance. Plus, I don't know if the Methadone or Xanax would affect whether or not I could be prescribed a psychostimulant. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also, I'd like to know which ADD meds seem to work better and which are strong enough for me to actually benefit from while taking two powerful depressants.

Thanks!

There's not much we can tell you, and we can't say what to tell your doctor other than to be truthful. There are only a handful of meds they prescribe so you will go by trial and error. We can't tell you which ones are strong enough since each person reacts differently to them.
