Opioids Addiction to oxycodone

Hello

A good friend of mine broke his achilles' heel playing soccer last year, he had surgery and was in a soft cast, then a month later he got hard cast and around Australia day (26th January) he was finally off crutches, wearing a ski boot on his leg. Anyway, on Australia Day we went out and all the walking fucked his leg and it broke again.

On that day he returned to hospital for surgery and is in a soft cast again. The doctor has prescribed him copious amounts of oxycodone and morphine, he is taking them every day at will and has plenty of spare scripts. Whenever I visit he is on his on the nod or just sitting there, completely off his trolley. He says the pain is very intense without the drugs, but he's not eating or sleeping properly to help his body recover..

I don't want him to end up with an opioid addiction, seeing a guy who I know of as fairly straight in this state makes me feel horrible. What is the best way for me to help him?

Thanks

Check out TDS (The Dark Side) forum. It will be much more helpful with interpersonal problems and an issue like helping a friend such as this. Other Drugs is more about chemically minimizing his tolerance and dependance which you could definitely direct him too if he does want to try and do something like that. There are a lot of stories about people who have become hooked on opioids after an injury and that battle can be just as painful as the injury itself.

If he's in serious pain and taking the drugs as needed, I wouldn't worry. If he has lots of extra scripts lying around he isn't eating them all, as fast as he can. If he is lying about pain levels to get stronger/more opioids there is a problem. You will know better when his leg heals, if he is taking it for the pain, or for other hedonistic reasons.

Any time someone mentions pain, ask them to rate it on a scale of 0-10.

That usually helps qualify the pain level.

Btw, any update on your friend?

If hes in pain don't bother him. Maybe express his concerns, but you shouldn't be worried until he keeps up abusing them after his pain is gone. Seems like your getting all worried with out much reason to imo. It seems silly to be so worried.

Have you talked to him about your concerns?
Is he taking more than prescribed? It sounds like it as usually a pain relief dose wont have you on the nod.

I hardly thing NA meetings are called for, the guy has a legitimate reason to be taking the pain killers.

If you say the meds are making him "off his trolley" then maybe you should talk to your friend about asking his doctor to switch to a different pain killer? Morphine in high dosages definitely makes you, well, different. I've seen it (too much) in some of my family, but as soon as they switched to a different pain killer, they are able to still get pain releif without all the extra unwanted effects like extreme sedation. Maybe your friend should try a lower dose, of a different medication? There are options, like Opana, fentanyl, dilaudid, to name a few.

I don't see whats wrong with you friend enjoying his scripts while hes in pain as a long as he still has enough meds to make sure he doesn't run out resulting in him dealing with the pain with out meds. I know any time my friends get opiates from a medical situation they make sure they have enough to deal with the pain and enjoy the fact they have some opioids. None of them are addicted. They just wanted to have a good time with opiates. Reasonable enough if you ask me. You need to talk to him about it rather than come to a forum which doesn't know anything about your friend or what hes doing.

Your friend broke his achilles twice, thats gotta hurt a lot.......I think hes taking his meds because he is in so much pain. He could be over doing it a little too much because hes nodding out so much as youve described, then again, ive never had the medical problem hes having so I dont know how much pain he is in. The way hes taking his meds, I would assume his pain is about an 8, thats why he is taking as much as he is to be nodding.

i MEAN he is not an addict..he needs the meds.. there is no problem right now. Start worrying about it when there is a problem.. like when the doctor stops prescribing and he goes out looking for them. HOpefulyl chances are he will stop taking them and never look back as soon as he is better.

Lol whatr you gonna do take away his meds when hes actually in pain? Let him nod out i mean shit.

An update: he is back working 20 hours per week and is seeing a physio and had no problem tapering off and rarely uses them at all. I guess drug addiction problems come down to the person and not the drug..

Thanks for all the posts they were very useful to me

There is a difference between addiction and physical dependancy.
