Okay, so I know there is quite a bit of information on adderall but my experience doesn't seem to match up and I need some advice.
Last night I took 2 5 mg pills of IR adderall, I know this is a very low dose but I was only interested in using it for increased concentration and wakefulness for studying. Also, I have very little experience with amphetamines. I ended up having so many side effects though (rapid heart rate, fever and chills, tingling limbs, the shakes, restlessness, jaw clenching, cotton mouth, shallow breathing, anxiety, cold and clammy hands and feet etc.) However, after about an hour I calmed down enough to focus although many of the side effects persisted. After about 3 more hours though a wave of intense effects hit me again. Then of course afterward I had insomnia but I was expecting that.
My real question is, do I just have a very low tolerance and should lower my dose to either 2.5 or 5 mg or is adderall just a bad drug for me? It really did help me get a lot accomplished when I wasn't freaking out.

I would try to lower the dose and see how you feel. It seems to me you are quite sensitive to amphetamines.

Try taking half a 5mg, and take the other half maybe in hour later if your not experiencing side effects. It may be that adderall isn't good for you. I know many people who are very sensitive and suffer the same side effects as you.

Avoid caffeine the day you plan to take it.

personally i had the same reaction to adderall - i have ADHD and am prescribed 40mg dexedrine a day.

adderall for some reason for me, no matter what dose i took, gave me an enormous amount of horrible side effects. for some people it just doesn't click.

i think it's becuase of the l-isomer of amphetamine contaned in it. its known to give horrendous effects.

You were feeling anxiety from taking a dose slightly over the edge of what your brain could handle.

When you take a stimulant it speeds up your mental process. Speeding up brain signalling while worrying about a medical emergency is called a stimulant induced panic attack.

AS former stated by a user above... Amphetamine is chiral which means it's a chemical with a mirror image of itself.. There are two stereoisomers Dextro and Levo... Dextro-amphetamine or Dexedrine/Dextrostat is the more sought after, useful and and primary active CNS effects.. Levo-Amphetamine on the other hand had very little to no CNS activity and a strong PNS effect which leads to your horrible side effects common with and RACEMIC amphetamine.. Adderall is 4 different amphetamine salts, two of them are that of the dextro stereo-isomer and the other two are Racemic which means it contains both Dextro and Levo... Summary, it's the l-amphetamine... Get switched to Dextroamphetamine sulphate tablets.

Thanks so much for your informative replies. So from what I understand I should just call it quits with the adderall and go for dex instead? Is it worth trying the 2.5 mg or is that asking for trouble?

I would try the low dose. I'm scripted 30 10mg ir adderals and 30 40mg vyvanse (lisdexamp) a month. I have a medium stim tolerance, but one vyvance or 1.5-2 adderal is usually all I need for good therapeutic effects. I don't experience much side effects from either one which I find odd as I used to... I guess tolerance helps there.

Like a few others have mentioned, these side effects are mostly due to the fact that Adderall contains 25% levo-amphetamine, which stimulates the peripheral nervous system, causing this unpleasant, 'tweaked out' sensation. You probably just dosed a little too high. When I haven't used any stimulant in a long time, and my tolerance is back to baseline, ten milligrams of Adderall is definitely enough to get me going, though its not enough to produce the undesirable effects. You probably are a little bit more sensitive to the effects of amphetamines is all. I'm not sure about the five milligram tablets, but I know that most of the generic 10mg tabs have two scores in them (actually, all strengths of Adderall IR that I've had have), so you can break your dosage down easily. Try 7.5mg instead. Also, make sure to drink lots of water, as it is important to stay hydrated while on amphetamines.

I agree that Dextroamphetamine wild probably be a better choice for you, and you might respond well to Vyvanse (Lisdexamphetamine), which is basically a prodrug for Dextroamphetamine. I know Vyvanse seems to get a lot of shit, but I find it to be pretty decent, especially when you've got a lot of work to do. lisdexamphetamine is metabolized into Dextroamphetamine, and it's onset is a bit slower, but it's duration is much longer, like an extended release medication. The stimulation is very smooth and the come down is pretty easy to handle, especially when compared to Adderall/mixed Amphetamine Salts.
