Hi I've been an alcoholic now for nearly 10 years and have tried chemical detox using Librium around 4 or 5 times now but always relapsed. This time around I'm taking the plunge and going cold turkey on January the 1st... Now, I know it's going to be difficult but I am prescribed 15mg diazepam a day as I'm suffering from Post traumatic stress after a serious accident that was alcohol related (hence the desire to quit).

Basically I have a big stash of Acamprosate (Campral) which is meant to help with alcohol cravings that I'm planning on finally using as when I first got them I really wasn't serious about knocking the booze on the head. What I need to find out is if taking Campral will cancel the anti-anxiety effects that the Diazepam is prescribed for - As my alcohol use has spiralled out of control since I started in the first place as already have Generalised Anxiety Disorder (so used Alcohol as a crutch for it so to speak).

It's going to be hard but in all reality I know I have to do this the hard way or Ill be dead by the time I'm 30 (I'm 26 atm).

Any help greatly apprieciated.

Happy new year to all.

Is campral a prescription? I've been managing my alcohol intake for years. I'm 52. I would think that you would want the valium for alcohol withdrawal anxiety.
I take over the counter L-Theanine for that.

OK, I googled Campral. I wasn't aware of it so I don't have experience mixing it with valium.
I can tell you that I would keep the benzo's like valium (although weaker than xanax) to a minimum.
I was on xanax once for a while when I was naive about them. I took myself off them and went through the worse withdrawal of my life. I wouldn't have wished that on anyone.

I'm pretty sure it's an nmda antagonist in which case it would potentiate and/or slow down the development of tolerance if it did anything.

How's the wd going?

Maybe you should try another taper with a benzo, preferably valium, if you are serious.

I'm just concerned you might fish out.

At the very least, continue taking your valium and if you have a seizure, take more benzos and get to the emergency room.

Man, I don't know which is worse alcohol withdrawal or heroin w/d's? I think booze is worse, I've literally thought I was going to die (seriously die) when I was drinking two fifths a day and suddenly threw myself into treatment with no comedown meds. I would try the benzo taper like people have mentioned above, but don't abuse them, they're like booze in pill form as far as your brain is concerned. 7-10 is about how long it takes to completely stop shaking and for the DT's to cease. Good luck, cowboy and keep us posted.
