A. berlandieri contains a number of diverse alkaloids, the most plentiful of which are N-methylphenethylamine, tyramine, and phenethylamine. In a recent study, researchers identified thirty-one alkaloids in samples of plant foliage, including trace amounts of five amphetamines previously believed to be human inventions:

[5] amphetamine, methamphetamine, N,N-dimethylamphetamine, p-hydroxyamphetamine and p-methoxyamphetamine. Other trace alkaloids include DMT (found in many related species), nicotine, and mescaline (found in many cacti but infrequently in other plants). The same group of researchers later reported finding most of the same alkaloids in A. rigidula, a related species also native to the Southwestern U.S. The findings, however, have never been confirmed or repeated, leading some researchers to believe the results were the result of cross-contamination.

Can anyone confirm this is true, PMA and meth in a tree? mescaline?
What kind of mutant plant is this

Acacia's are an amazing plant, containing many known and understood chemicals as well as some very little known or unknown ones.

I have read about the above mentioned species before, but without a second lab analysis I can't say whether it is true for certain. Even if they are produced by this plant, they would most likely be in trace amounts and an unviable source.

I know tyramine and nicotine have been found in more than just this species of acacia.

Keep researching all species of plants from around the world and you will be amazed at the abundance of weird and wonderful chemicals produced by them. We still have much to learn. There are multiple psycho-active plants containing unknown chemicals. If you are really interested, you could get into this field of research. Who knows, you may even discover the next big party or psychedelic drug. Let me know if you find a substance with similar effects to MDMA but less neuro toxic. That my friend, is where the money is at ;)

I left it open since it may be food for thought for some newer posters.

Poledriver: I don't see where safrole comes into this, it is a precursor to MDMA, which is a neuro toxic releaser of serotonin and to a less extent dopamine. It is one of a few essential oils from which MDMA can be produced (we can't go into the chemistry of that though)

A non neuro toxic releaser of serotonin would probably be my new drug of choice (and worship ;)) if it were to come about. How I wish it already existed... I blame MDMA for many of my worst drug side effects and many of the best nights of my life. Love/hate relationship much?

Not too sure about this find.

In 1997 and 1998,[12][13] researchers at Texas A&M University claimed to have found amphetamine and methamphetamine in the foliage of two Acacia species native to Texas, A. berlandieri and A. rigidula. Previously, both of these compounds had been thought to be human inventions. These findings have never been duplicated, and the analyses are believed by many biochemists to be the result of experimental error, and as such the validity of the report has come into question. Alexander Shulgin, one of the most experienced biochemical investigators and the discoverer of many new psychotropic substances, has tried to contact the Texas A&M researchers and verify their findings. The authors of the paper have not responded; natural amphetamine remains an unconfirmed discovery.[14]

Sounds like a crazy ex-love that broke my heart/spirit in a beautiful yet arduous love affair between the years of 98 - 2003 ;)
