I am interested in trying absinthe and I have done internet research on it.
Can companies outside of the United States ship absinthe into the U.S.?
I have checked here at bluelight and at erowid, and both have been very ambiguous.
Does anyone know for sure?

i dont think theres suppose to, but its just like hempseed they do it anyway, its not like they can open you mail and test it. order it, see if it comes in, the worst that will happen is us customs will send you a letter saying you wont be recieving your package.

Can they? Yeah, of course... Will they? Certinly, there is money to be made ... will you get in trouble if they catch it? Possibly... I am not 100% certin about it's legal status and how much it would take before they actually pursued legal action... I am sure someone else knows..

I did a search using Ask Jeeves and one of the sites said this....
"U.S. Customs codes state "The importation of Absinthe and any
other liquors or liqueurs that contain an excess of artemisia
absinthium is prohibited."
In real world practice it is illegal to import any liquor that contains
a detectable concentration of artemisia absinthium.
U.S. Customs can seize anything labeled as absinthe. If they do
or don't, that depends on the knowledge and discretion of the
agent.
If absinthe does not contain artemisia absinthium, and there are
several brands available, the product is fully legal in the US. Most
companies that sell non artemisia absinthium absinthe guarantee
no U.S. customs problems."
(sorry don't know the real link cos of how ask jeeves works)
anyway, it depends whether it actually has artemisia absinthium (wormwood) in it. if it doesn't it's legal, but it's not worth getting, it'll just be like 4x strength vodka or something.
your poor thing being in the US... it's all perfectly legal here in the UK - i've got a bottle in my cupboard! ;)

I have ordered from a company based in the UK, and haven't had any problem with it. Absinthe is rather expensive though, at least all the places that I've seen. A search will turn up a number of suppliers. The one I use is through the UK

A friend of mine ordered a bottle 2 months ago from a UK company and it has never arrived, nor any letter from customs. I guess he has to try to find the print out of his order confirmation (which he did online, of course) and e-mail them, if they are still around. He might have gotten ripped off. Kinda' like some of those companies that sell research chemicals--some are legit, but some are fronts that take your money knowing you can't really do anything about it.

I found it to be a very interesting drunk. Although I was very drunk, due to the high alcohol content, I still felt very lucid and clear headed, although my thought process was altered. After speaking with some ppl who were present, I determined that I was indeed really trashed, even though I thought that I wasn't. Definitly interesting stuff, and worth trying, at least in my opinion.

any specific brands that are worth looking for?
thanks for all of the feedback

Any brand with the 10mg/kg thujone content. I could be off with my units of measure, but I think that is correct. I think that 10mg is the highest content that you can get. It also goes as low as 2 mg. I believe that thujone is the active, or at least the most active alkaloid in Absinthe. There are numerous recipes available that tell you how to make absinthe, so you can avoid the high cost of the finished product. This may possibly be the route to go if you are looking to experience the effects, and not just savour the taste. (kind of a black licorice/jagermeister/Green Death Nyquil taste in my opinion.)

Deva from Spain is a very good brand of absinthe, and it's unsually not too expensive. Hills is shit. Distilerian Montana is also very good.
I think US customs have a lot more important things to worry about than green wine bottles.

Yes they will take your money & ship it to you. Chances are you will get it. But there is always the chance that customs will get a hold of it first & seize it. Can you get in trouble? Probably, but I doubt that they will come to your door. Most likely they will just send you a letter that your package has been seized...
