Sounds a bit to me like you wouldn't give a higher dose a try, and that they may have wanted you on a higher dose. 2mg acts quite differently than 30mg, the latter of which is the dose for serious bipolar disorder (serious as insignificantly inhibits everyday function without it). The former, 2mg, basically acts in a pro-dopminergic manner. 30mg is more of an antipyschotic dose. But abilify isn't a real "heavy hitter", as far as antipsychotics go, even at 30mg. It's supposed to be easier to tolerate than the others (perhaps vraylar is in this category, too). But I have heard that the restlessness can be painful.
Yeah I don't have an MD, but .5mg abilify isn't a dose I'v heard of before that has efficacy, whether it's to augment antidepressants or treat psychosis.
