Someone I know very well who came successfully off subs in a detox facility told me that he was told caffeine will make withdraw worse. How true is this? And please explain why

It could possible increase the severity of some of these possible symptoms.

Demonstrating shakiness.
Chills.
Anxiety.
Stress.
Fatigue
Depression
Difficulty thinking clearly or expressing one’s self coherently.
Extremely volatile; mood swings.
Presence of intermittent or persistent headaches.
Sweating.
Clammy skin.
Weight loss
Sleep disturbances – difficulty falling asleep; difficulty staying asleep; or a combination of both.
Loss of appetite.
Rapid heart-rate.
Nausea and vomiting.
Sweating
Insomnia
Abdominal cramping
Chill bumps
Burning skin sensation

Here is a good possibilty as to why I could make things worse >Caffeine and the Adrenal Glands<

The reason clonidine is used to combat opiate withdraw is to try and limit the crazy adrenial response that acompanies withdraws, so if we take things lie cafine. methylphenidate, or amphetamines or even exercise moderately to intensely then we increase the already uncomfortable levels of adrenalin in the body.

Caffeine withdrawal on top of opiod/benzo/alcohol withdrawal will also serve to increase symptoms
