I heard two Americanisms on the streets of Vienna for the first time this week: the first was Betäubungsmittelkrise, or roughly the opioid crisis, à-propos of some of the usual foolishness in the international media concerning the US situation and government, and "Milf", which was imported as-is, in what I believe was a discussion of the new Chancellor and a couple of other politicians . . .I don't expect anything untoward any time soon as the Constitutional Court has reportedly said at least twice that the Constitution and custom give Austrians a right to take narcotics, apparently based on the 1920/1955 Bundes-Verfassungsgesetz and other acts. I for one much preferred the 1951 Suchgiftverordnung to the new Suchtmittelgesetz and methadone tightening forced on us in 1998 after accession to the European Union, which was the straw which broke the camel's back and turned me into a still-uncommon hardcore Eurosceptic in the {local} political centre.

But . . .why Uncle Sam? Why?
