A generation hooked on caffeine

For adults, being “addicted” to caffeine is considered perfectly normal, but what effect does chronic caffeine consumption—particularly via soft drinks—have on young people?

And, does consuming caffeinated drinks during adolescence contribute to later use of legal or illicit drugs?

Neurobiologist Jennifer Temple, assistant professor of exercise and nutrition sciences at the University at Buffalo and director of its Nutrition and Health Research Laboratory, is looking for answers to these questions through a four-year study funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Her paper addressing caffeine’s appeal to young soft drink consumers appears in the December 2009 issue of Behavioural Pharmacology, and is thought to be the first study to show a gender effect in the appeal of caffeinated soda in young people.

Given the effects of caffeine in adults, the researchers expected to see a difference between those who habitually consumed a lot of soft drinks and those who consumed few. However, results showed that the difference was based on gender: The males in the study worked harder and longer on a computer-based exercise to obtain caffeinated drinks.

While Temple’s primary research interest is a behavior called food reinforcement, she became intrigued with caffeine consumption in children after conducting a small study in 8- to 12-year-olds.

“We had a lot of kids who were drinking not only soda, but coffee,” she relates. “I had 12-year-old girls who said that all they had that morning was a cup of coffee. I started thinking—’This can’t be good.’”

These observations led Temple to investigate how hard a person will work to obtain a particular food—or in this case, a caffeine drink—and how food reinforcement mimics drug addiction. She’s hoping to more fully understand the mechanisms that underlie such reinforcement.

The recently published study on the reinforcing value of caffeine involved 26 boys and 23 girls ages 12 to 17. The participants, who were not aware the study was testing caffeine’s reinforcement effects, were placed into groups based on their reported caffeine consumption.

Participants were sent home with a week’s supply of test soda, randomized to be caffeinated or non-caffeinated, and were instructed to drink a 32-ounce bottle every day, for seven days, and to avoid other soda or caffeinated products. During the second week, they obtained a week’s supply of the opposite drink.

Participants then returned to a laboratory equipped with two computers, one on which participants played a computer game to earn caffeinated drinks and on the other, non-caffeinated drinks, although the drinks’ caffeine status was blinded. The longer they played, the more difficult the game became.

Temple says the difference in the reinforcing potential of caffeine between males and females, but not between high and low consumers, was surprising. “These data are novel and they add to the small, but growing, body of literature on caffeine use in children and adolescents.”

She speculates the gender differences could be based on the effect of circulating hormones at the time of the test, although this was not measured, and suggests the possibility that females are less sensitive to caffeine’s effects.

Temple and colleagues now have completed the second part of the study—a double-blind, placebo-controlled, dose-response study of the effects of caffeine on the teenagers’ blood pressure, heart rate, and hand tremor. Two papers currently are being drafted reporting the results. A third component of the study that focuses on the effect of caffeine consumption during adolescence on later use of legal or illegal drugs is getting under way.

i think most ppl know if they are drinking caffeine, which is fine, try googling aspartame, and some of the other crap that they put in most things these days, and no one even knows they are drinking it! 8o

i recently saw an exposé on kids going to sleep later and later on school nights and not getting enough sleep, hence the need for a caffeine fix to get them wired enough to operate through the day. the fatigue goes away through the day making it easier to keep on keeping on with substandard amounts of sleep. the point of the exposé was that kids are getting too much electronic stimulation causing them to stay up unnaturally late and the lack of sleep impairs their neurological development. in other words, people are progressively getting more and more retarded.

im seriously addicted to caffeine pills. i have to take 2 a day or i'm groggy as hell and i feel useless.

this is exactly the problem with the western world. you're not supposed to feel groggy or useless, that's a sign of illness. i know a disturbing amount of people who have ILLNESS stamped right all over their face chugging cup after cup of caffeine to get their fix and they seem completely ignorant to the evidence that they're sick. it's the typical behaviour of a drug addict, and imho if you're gonna be a drug addict then for fuck's sakes choose something better than a crappy, half-assed stimulant high.

remember what it does to spiders!

just look at that caffeine net. the spider's a fucking trainwreck, just like a person who's had one cup too many and doesn't wanna admit it!

I drink 4-5 cups of tea each day and it feels good for my body. The tea high never gets you jittery and anxious like coffee it's a smooth light stimulation with no edgeiness.

That and i'm pretty damn sure it's nice and healthy for me.

I fucking love caffeine from tea! Coffee on the other hand I don't drink it's to strong and makes me feel on edge.

I respect your opinion, but let's be clear about remembering that people should have the right to choose what drugs they take - the right to control their consciousness is (or should be) a (the) fundamental right of human beings.

Also, would you prefer a full-on stimulant high, like cocaine? Or something more relaxing, like oxy or heroin? These are all MUCH harder to get off of than caffeine. So let's maintain an attitude of respect for those who choose to be addicted to that "half-assed stimulant", as you put it. Maybe less stimulation and easier quitting (not to mention social acceptability) works for them, in their lives. [Not saying that you were disrespectful, but just noting the high incidence of insults and profanity in that statement, I wanted to be clear about it.]

have you drank yerba mate? one of my favorite tea. It has a fairly high caffeine content tea-wise. Still no jitters or anxiety either just like most teas. Has 2 other stimulants also in the tea. I also hate coffee because its keep me on edge all day; the anxiety kills me just like taking L-amp

Its great with a little honey

Will look into that! for sure!

Be careful with yerba mate.
It apparently has a chemical very similar to, but distinct from, caffeine (based on what they told me when I bought a cup).
It gave me lots of energy, as with a strong dose of caffeine, but it was sold as a "caffeine-free" drink.

Why does this post get me even more excited about Yerba mate =D

I Used to drink 2-3 energy drinks throughout the day most everyday. Wasn't doing my heart any good so I stopped, I hear people who say they find it hard to quit lol. theres not even a 'buzz' to it, just helps ya get through those early morning shifts.

nope, you're just gullible sorry to say. look no further than wikipedia.

I wonder if they used sugar-free sodas in their tests? I always assumed it was the combination of sugar and caffeine that caused issues.

On a personal level, I think caffeine can offer a pleasant buzz if the dosage is right. Getting the caffeine from a decent cup of coffee without processed sugar seems to give different feeling than with sugar.

Yerba mate is worse than coffee for caffeine content. It's strong shit. Stick to tea tree leaves for a low-caffeine drink.

^Yerba mate also has high levels of other xanthines which will get you wired as hell. Definitely not for people sensitive to stimulants. I consume 200mg of caffeine every morning, and a decently strong cup of mate will still make me feel like I'm coming up on a speedy roll...

maois effect apparently to blame. green tea seems to lack anxiety and have a really happy mild focus- theanine caffeine combo

also mate is meant to be shared between a group...

its the sugar/caffeine combo that really fucks your heart. also those b vitamins just intensify the high:\

I can't drink more than 1 cup of Coffee because it makes me terribly anxious and gives me palpitations, but as for tea I can keep drinking and drinking with no such effects.
It's probably due to the Theanine content of tea which has a sort of "counter-balancing" effect towards the Caffeine.
So I just find it relaxing, barely stimulating but it definitely gets me out of a daze in the morning :)
I'm most certainly addicted to Caffeine in that form anyway... Sort of in the same vein as using Nicotine patches don't stop cravings but smoking an actual ciggy does.

Go Theanine! ^_^
