a few Mirtazepine questions

I know that 25mg of mirtazepine is most sedating & is best taken at night.
but when u get to 50mg or more the NRI effect outweighs the anithistamine sedation & becomes more stimlulating.

so if i were to start taking 50mg or more of mirtazepine would it be better to take it in the morning or at night?

also ive been trying a few antipychotics for a while, olanzapine, & quetiapine at night & wanna do a short taper. is it ok to start the mirtazepine before I stop taking antipsychotics? so that would be doing both mirtazepine & an antipsychotic at night?

obviously its ok to start an SSRI//SNRI while on an antipsychotic?
a pharmacist told me that some SSRIS are dangerous to mix with antipsycotics. but i assume that he doesnt know wtf he's talking about.

If u've tired mirtazepine, how did it take u to start to feel the effect?
I think i read somewhere that it generally starts working faster than SSRIS/SNRIS

Since it's actually a serotonin and noreipinephrine reuptake enhancer it starts to generally work faster then SSRI's and SNRI's. I started out at 15mg's and made it up to 30mg's a night. The shit knocked me out and made me eat anything in the fucking house. I was taking it with about 2mg's of risperdal at the time as well.

The only interaction it would have with seroquel would be the fact that both are strong anti-histamines so you could get really strong anti-histaminic side effects. Id check with your doctor.

^^ say u wanted to up the dose to 45mg or even 60mg ud have to start taking it in the morning instead though, right? cuz of the stronger noradrenalin reuptake inhibitor

how long did it take for u to start to feel any effects?
how long did it take for u to start to feel the full effects?

Do not dose past 30mg's! Your going above the recomended dose there and that could cause alot of problems. If you need something for noreipinephrine reuptake there are alot of other meds that do it better and are slightly more selective.

As for how long it took me to feel the effects i never really got much of a anti-depressant effect from it. Hence why i stopped taking it plus im bipolar and it can make my moods flippy.

when i tried 15mg before bed it felt stimulating. i thought it would make me sedated.
so i dont think i would try 30mg. atleast not at night time unless 30mg is still consitered a sedating dose?

im still wondering whether its a normal thing to dose in the morning? (especially at 30mg.)

im certainly not consitering taking to for its NRI effects consitering i get anxiety. basicallt its suppose to be a really good AD. My dr wants me to try it.. & besides benzos, even though ADs may not be the best of meds to take, they're atleast worth a try. atleast according to the drs

Mirtazipine begins to lose its effects as a sedative as the dose increases. I was suggested to start with 7.5mg and move to 15 and at max 30mg for help with anxiety related insomnia. At higher dosages it begins to have mild stimulative effects which make it lose its efficacy as a sedative/hypnotic. so if that's what you're going for I'd say dose with 30+mg but if you want sedation go lower. As far as its antidepressant effects go, I was under the impression that they take time to build up, like many anti-d's but that the dosage wasn't as big of a factor but I could be way off the mark here.

I only used it for sleep in dosages from 7.5 to 30mg . It can leave you with a weird hangover-esque feeling, slow brain function, dehydration, grogginess etc. But it didn't always leave me feeling so. it was hit or miss.

sorry to bump....
but still wondering if anyone doses mirtazepine in the morning. (if this is normal for 30mg)

why does it matter? take it when your doctor has instructed you too. it not like you can get a buzz of this shit..

As has been said, there is little to no recreational value to this drug, and it can be quite sedating. However, the best bet is to follow your doctor's dosing instructions. If he told you to take that dosage in the morning then go ahead and do it, if you have troublesome side effects I would speak to him about maybe changing dosing/dosing schedule or maybe even what prescription you've got.

i was just simply wondering if it keps other ppl awake. & if other ppl tolerate taking it in the morning. fuck the drs advice. if the dr new what was best for me i would have been cured years ago
I dont care if its not "recreational" i have depression. & its suppose to make me feel better. that would make my life more recreational. it still has an effect & i wanna know how it effects other ppl.

I take mirtazepine at night (45mgs), and it was once sedating and is not anymore (basically all sleep meds are like this for me). If I forget to take it at night I take it in the morning no problem. For what it's worth.

thx for the post lasthurrah19.. i was actually more worried about it keep me awake than making me sedated. but if u can sleep at 45mg than i can sleep at 15mg i guess.
have u tried other AD?
Hows is it comparing?
Are u feeling better on it?

I've never been on mirtazepine without other psych drugs, so it's hard to say really. I definitely am feeling better with the combo of meds I am on (5 things). I have/had pretty severe depression though, with six or seven hospital stays in that time, as well as PTSD and a dissociative disorder. I also take 400mg of Seroquel and that barely makes me tired at all, so maybe I'm not such a good indicator of the drowsiness factor. I think medication has helped me barely hold on when I otherwise would not have been able to, but what really got me feeling better was a lot of therapy. I'm currently on a 'therapy break' as I had to cut it off with my old therapist, though I do have one session of therapy with my psychiatrist 1-2 times a month. As far as pronounced effects from medications, I've only noticed that seroquel (seemed) to almost completely annihilate my almost near constant suicidal thoughts, and helps a lot with anxiety. And buproprion helps a TON with motivation/anhedonia, for me. Everything else seems to help but it's more generalized and 'everything gets a little better' rather than a symptom or two getting remarkably better like what happened with me and seroquel/buproprion. These two also gave me the worst side effects at first (restless leg syndrome and severe anxiety/insomnia/anorexia, respectively)

I do know it gave me absolutely zero side effects, besides the sedation which was welcome. Sorry for the novel on stuff you didn't really ask about.

^yeah ive been taking seroquel lately. a had a few high doses over it but only have just started taking it 250mg does get me pretty tired. yet i still wake up during the night.
I can tell u than Zyprexa (olanzapine) is a much smoother drug that seems to have less weird side effects like visual distorsions & feeling off balance.
75mg seroquel = approx 5mg Zyprexa. maybe u should give i a try.

it takes 250mg of seroquel before it stats blocking dopamine. (stated on wikipedia)
any dose of zyprexa blocks dopamine * more of the dopamine reciptors. (im fairly sure this is correct)

here is an antipsychotic comparison chart if u are interested. (click on the pdf file)
it stats which ones puit on the most weight, equivelent doses, affinity to receptors etc.

Anon, I find that I sleep much better when I take Seroquel XR. It doesn't knock me out but it does help me sleep for more than a few hours (less awakenings). It also seems to work as a better mood stabilizer because of the longer duration. Also takes about an hour and a half to start working, as opposed to regular taking about 30-45 minutes for me. I don't know if this is an option or something you'd be interested but it's just my experience.

Thanks for the chart, good info. I am happy with my combo of meds for now but in the future I'll keep Zyprexa in mind. My psychiatrist brought it up at one point briefly but increased Seroquel XR seemed to help enough that we decided to stick with it.

Good luck with your meds :)
