“Have you ever been ripped from the world, falling horizontally, to where the endpoints of vision coalesce?”

“I have.”

“And have you ever dreamed that the world was darkness, and you, yourself, were darkness also, moving but without fixation?”

“I have dreamed such a thing. I sat in a blackened church. All the saints were black.”

“And have you lived?”

“I have lived, breathing in monotone.”

“Have you seen the machinations? Did you fathom their complexity, their depth?”

“I proceeded with stuttering entreaty, casting points of light at the stolid and immense totems that exist in the center of all things, anciently.”

“What is it that you found, inside the hub of the swirling nexus?”

“I found consequence.”

“And what of that?”

“What of it? There was nothing more.”

“And what then did you do?”

“I laughed.”

This is very, very good stuff.

You've managed to maintain a tone of speech throughout that is convincing, foreboding, and pseudo-scriptural. And the ending is perfect, after the gravity of what comes before: how else could a conversation about the abyss end, except in laughter?

Also I like the fact that you've decided to present a dialogue in isolation, without explicit characterisation, setting, etc. This adds to the allure and mystery of it.

“I proceeded with stuttering entreaty, casting points of light at the stolid and immense totems that exist in the center of all things, anciently.”

Wow!

Can't say much more than wordy... this was great.

The choice of language is superb, love the style.

Nice one =D

I'd like to double that wow and agree with what wordy said, the lack of detail around who or what just makes it pack that much more punch!
