96 deaths, 27 years, justice - Hillsborough

Ever since they stopped putting tits on page three it's one sole reason for existence vanished....

Imagine growing up in a house where the two papers your dad bought every day were The Sun and the Daily Mail?

It explains a lot actually (had to get that one in before anyone else did :))

Tbh mate, The Sun is notorious for putting tits on every page...

I'm so glad something has finally happened. I used to watch Sheffield Wednesday at home, when I was a kid, and I believed football mattered. I've certainly read a lot about the Hillsborough disaster and looked at the Leppings Lane end, when at matches, and thought '96 people died there'. When they played Liverpool, the place was packed, actually. It was always Duckenfield's fault, and he deserves to be locked up. It doesn't matter how many people were pissed up, or how many turned up without a ticket. He lied about opening that gate, and the whole force covered it up. He should have just said that he fucked up, and he probably would have been made redundant and left to get over what he did. Instead, he has to live with the fact that he opened that gate, killed a load of people, then just lied about it. He must be shitting his fucking pants.

When I see someone reading The Sun, it makes me want to punch them like a Daily Mail reader. That's a fucking evil newspaper.

This story probably doesn't do it justice, but whenever a new tradesman comes on site with us and brings the sun paper with him, we sit down for a cuppa and when the fella gets his paper out my labourer (doggy) sets fire to the bottom of the paper with his lighter, at the same time telling everyone , " that fucking Suns hot today ain't it "

You'd have to be there ,but it really is pretty funny to see some fella who's never worked with us before jumping about with his paper on fire. While we're drinking cans of Stella. Cracking up. =D

This won't be popular but it does bug me slightly there is no accountability whatsoever from Liverpudlians that ticketless fans - a proven fact - could have helped cause this disaster.

No argument that the police mis handled the event in the most appealing way not to mention the disgusting cover up but why oh why does no one dare question the very fact if it weren't for ticketless Liverpool fans the disaster wouldn't have played out

Easier to point the finger.

Hello Officer.

Not that you'll bother to read it, because you couldn't even be bothered to do any research (there's this thing called google) before posting your police apologia, but here is a full rebuttal as to why you are talking out of your arse.

Now don't you have some donuts to eat? Busy nightshift was it?

There is a reason freedom of information laws release secret government papers after 30 yrs. by this stage most politicians are either dead or time has dulled the public outrage enough for things to slip by without consequence.

This is simply another piece of history with a similar ending.

Because politics and humanity never evolve at all through the struggle of decent honest people do they?

Wtf am I doing talking to you of all people about decency and honesty?

Get of you scabby high horse SHM. No one is saying what the police did wasn't terrible, but to say that hundreds of liverpool supporters are immune from any responsibility is plainly ignorant and sad.

It's an emotive subject so you're excused.

There were ticketless Liverpool fans at Hillsborough. Sorry that doesn't suit your agenda but thems the facts. Sure the police are culpable for the decisions they made (a point I made clear in my first reply) but Liverpool fans played a part in the tradegy

Fast forward to Galatasary in more recent times and ticketless Liverpool fans were at it again.

Glad they got justice for the police cover up let's hope the 39 dead Italians will get their justice too.

If the police were so convinced it was ticketless fans and not their own incompetence at traffic management (which should also include making provisions for ticketless fans if there are any) then why did they feel the need to spin such a web of lies to get themselves off the hook? They didn't need to intervene.

They lied because the truth is/was they messed up. Big time. They managed the situation in the worst possible manner it's just convenient to stop there rather than raise the question - was the presence of ticketless fans a contributing factor?

You have a strange way of thinking there mystery man.

All the lies and cover ups by the police (just remember what their job is supposed to be) and the distress caused by this and it still bugs you that some football fans attended without tickets and that they are not held accountable.

That is a crazy outlook to have. I'm not even going to attempt to explain why...cos if you don't get it now you probably never will.
Let me put it another way. Would the disaster have unfolded if those ticketless fans weren't there? We all know the answer

If I were to go to an event without a ticket what is my primary goal? Do I expect to get in? What will I expect when I get there?

The logic is very simple - bad management led to a disaster. Clearly Misteremen has never gone to an event or a match, or perhaps he / she has but from on top of a horse.

We the people going to an event follow the direction of those in charge. Ultimately we have no say in how they manage it, we must follow their orders. We give up our rights. We become a herd. The shepherd being those given the job of controlling the herd. We expect to be safe and managed. We expect those without the right to access are also suitably managed.

Of course there will be those who try to get a ticket at the event or try to find a way in but the whole purpose of buying that ticket is to pay for the correct management of the event and to stop those without a ticket from entering.

Did the ticketless enter by scaling walls? Or were they let in because of poor management. End of their is no argument.

There is absolutely no mileage in even suggesting fault of people without tickets it is an illogical argument of those still looking for excuses.

Well, if we are going to throw blame onto anyone besides the police, how about blaming the mindless thugs whose behaviour managed to convince those in charge that perimeter fences were a good idea in the first place?

And why did the authorities decide to put Liverpool fans in the Leppings Lane end, which was the "Away" fans' end, when there are more people who support Liverpool than Forest?

Still, that gate should never have been opened. It ought to have been obvious to anybody -- especially a high-ranking police officer, who could be expected to know a bit about people and how they are likely to behave in a given situation -- what was going to happen if you suddenly allowed even more people into an already-packed confined space.

There was a whole culture of treating football supporters as less than fully human (and some, undeniably, acting less than fully human) that was the real problem.

I think you still miss the point.

At the time yes hooligan behaviour was rife. However this was KNOWN expected and should of been planned for. It was very common to see violence on the terraces created by a few that had no interest in the football being played.

The police and the event managers were fully aware of the potential of the crowd. It wasn't a case of this match being any different to any other at that time.

Things were different back then agreed. The changes that came after this disaster in crowd management, people flow and how to control crowds was a direct result. Seating, barrier flows, studies in crowd movement, removal of fences, CCTV and task forces to target known hooligans etc.

It took a disaster of this magnitude for those involved in event management to realise they hadn't done their job properly, the measures in place were not sufficient, they had not done a full health and safety assessment in providing a safe environment.

Instead, rather than admitting failure and accepting that errors were made they lied and tried to place blame elsewhere to cover up their own poor management. That's the point BecomingJulie.
