Agreed. They sound pretty lousy.

My parents paid for my education too. They saw it as their responsibility; sort of the last helping hand out of the nest. Thing is, I still worked. In hindsight, I shouldn't have, but I did. I don't like playing the 'what if' game, but I'd imagine that I would have at least had a higher GPA if I was not working. Probably would have been able to go straight into grad school too. Ah well. The point is: don't let these little people bring you down to their level. Smile, nod, and know that you'll never have to deal with them again, soon enough.

I think a lot of people around this age like to talk like they are responsible. I'd chalk most of it up to posturing.

From your description, it sounds like you're at a decently prestigious university and most people who get to go to good schools have their parents to thank. Some might pay their bills with a part time job, but that did not get them to this college. Their parents providing a stable home and environment is what got them there in most cases. In this sense, I don't think it's fair of any of them to say that they support themselves. They're still on the coattails of what their parents provided unless they were moved out of their parents house and completely independent before going to college.
