Thats right folks , for just $3.50 you can get cold water at club 77! No more " Is the tap water going to be cold or hot this time?"
As most people that go would know, 77 now seems to have constant hot water flowing in their taps.... and now, they've stopped giving out cold cups of water AND ice!
Now, when you're sweating your face off inside, you can't even get a cup(small even!) of ice to put down the back of your neck etc

Well , whether its legal or not , i'd like to extend my middle finger out rigidly at the bastards....they had the decency to do something about the a/con, so why go and destroy the new found sense of care that they had established amongst patrons who thought that it was too hot before and have now returned to the club???

I think you will find that shutting off water or piping hot water through both hot and cold taps (outside, in toilets, etc.) is illegal. A complaint to the Health Authorities and/or the local council involved should be enough to force them to stop this practice.
They don't have to provide ice though I would have thought it would be a good Public Relations exercise. Your comments are proof of that.

I'm sure jb will be able to provide detailed and current information regarding the provision of cold tap water for free in licensed establishments, having just been through the miles of red tape required to become a licensed publican. To the best of my knowledge it is a legal requirement that licensed venues provide free tap water in clean drinking vessels at the request of patrons.

um er... um... lemme check my licensing book. i never really looked as i've never even considered not having it.
oh btw i'm in victoria. n.s.w. has a very different licensing system.
er i cant find it online. i have the full legislation in hardcopy somewhere. so far the only possible infringement it could be is:

Liquor Control Reform Act 1998 (Victoria) Section 99 - Failure to provide refreshments on request at licensed premises - Max. Penalty $500 (not on the spot)
The licensee under a license that authorises the licensee to supply liquor for consumption on the licensed premises or on any authorised premises must have available on those premises for purchase, and must provide on request, refreshments at any time at which liquor is available for supply.

i think the emphasis on purchase means that water must be available for sale. there is nothing here saying they have to give it to you. completely fucked, i agree,but true.
i'm going to ring them and ask for details on this, but they are closed now. if someone could remind i'll look into this in the new year.
as for other states it's probably best to ring the state licensing departments. i had enuf trouble finding this section in my handbook, i'd be lost in other states...
but to be honest it pretty much has to be this way. either you pay lots for your water, or else you will get slugged with a very hefty doorcharge. maybe both.
running bars is an expensive business, and the current trend of taking drugs and not drinking much is killing the club industry, or at least making it change itself radically.
the only way clubs in the UK and US have survived is by charging insane amounts at the door. this is why it will cost you ten pounds to get into an average london club. 5 of those pounds will be going to pay the wages of the staff, another 3 on stock and bills. it used to be that you'd be guarenteed that every punter would spend on average 50 pounds over the bar... when was the last time you spent that much money on drinking every week?
i'm not defending the actions of pricks who turn off the hotwater, just giving you their side, and in a way my side. there's always water for free at my bar, but i can't help but sympathise with club owners who have seen their profits nosedive. spending your whole life building up a business and then having it become unviable because of a change of the public's fickle habits must hurt.
3 bucks for a water is a lot. but remember most of that money is probably going to pay the poor bar grrl who sold it to you.

last night at the sunny side up thank you party, small bottles of water were $5. ofcourse i found this price ridiculous but i didn't have too much of a problem with it because at least you were able to refill the water -- so maybe think of it as $5 for water all night. add the $10 entrance fee and it comes to $15, not bad for a night at a club. its fucked when only hot water is available (THE CAGE) and even more fucked when its not available AND the bottles of water are ridiculously expensive. For the price of the water at SSU you could get a value meal at mcdonalds or enough chips at a fish and chip shop to feed a lot of people.
at the purple emerald for recovery, i went to the bar and asked for a glass of water. the bartender said 'sorry mate, we only sell bottles of water' and i said thats cool and turned to walk away. he said 'hey buddy' and picked up a glass, threw it over his head, catched it with his other hand and filld it with ice and water and a piece of lemon in a few seconds. it was like i was in a scene from the movie Cocktail

77 is in breach of the NSW Government Dance Party Guidelines. Cold water must be supplied - FREE! It must also be provided in the bathrooms.
The provision of cold water was included in the guidelines as a critical harm reduction measure.
I have the link to the guidelines on my pc at home (I'm on my laptop at the moment). I'll post the link later.

Go to the NSW Department of local government's home page and download the guidelines from the publications section. It's an adobe acrobat pdf file.
The guidelines whould be brought to the attention of 77's management. It is the responsibility of all promoters and club owners to implement them -they were after all developed by the industry in conjuntion with the police, the department of local government and the department of health.

know of any equivalent legislation for victoria? coz i dont. i'm fairly sure we don't have any dance party/club specific laws,mainly becauseour state has never had any hysterics about them and felt the need to legislate.

Not sure if its still the case in Vic, but several years ago pubs/bars were required to have water freely available on the bar, with glasses at evenly spaced intervals (I think from memory it was 1.5 metre intervals.
However I also remember that there were very few pubs which followed this requirement exactly - they'd normally have just one jug of water on the bar somewhere.
It was all to do with responsible service of alcohol, and when the new regulations came in there was a bit of a crack-down on places not being responsible enough!
