6-7 Years of Raves OLD VS NEW

Funnily enough, this is one of the key ideas I'll be toying with in my research assignment, the idea of 'cool' being a commodity that can take the place of the beliefs a sub/counter-culture can be founded upon.
I'll be keeping a close eye on this thread. Any responses to the above welcome...

Wire.

A Bushdoof is way different, the people are completely different(alot of hippie style people), very cool to talk too. They can explain things to me that I thought I could never understand.
The atmosphere, is amazing the cars parked all around, our cars usually become the meeting place for many a crew. Its alot more relaxed because they often go for days, so there is no need to munch munch munch. The music (usually psy - trance) pounds though everything no matter how far you go its still there. The drug intake is alot different, the dominate drug would probably be acid and people generaly just trip around. (mentle note "Do I dance like that on acid") Very cool, very relaxed and recomended.

Just a thought...
For those that were attending raves over 3-4 years ago, i have a question. Back in the good 'ol days were there massive intimidating (adjectives excluded due to offensive content) cokeheads running around with thier shirts off? Coz to me they seem to be multiplying faster than bacteria in recent times!

Since I don't know much I guess I should research some more huh? Maybe I should start a thread on that?

I haven't been clubbing or even dancing on e for the 4 years I've been on it, didn't know what I was missing!

I don't know the scene but from what I've read would I be right in saying that a doof is more what a rave used to be? An underground dance party, catering for the ecstacy and acid takers rather than recent more commercial raves that cater for people who take speed bombs thinking they are ecstacy?

Totally wrong there (in a fashion). It was (is) all about the vibe. It's a communal feeling that you are all there for the same reason. To enjoy each other's company and to HAVE FUN. Not to get off chops 100% of the time and not know what the hell is going on around you. The feeling of doing something that is only being enjoyed by a handful of others has that special kind of feeling of kinship with all the other party goers. Not being part of the establishment for the time and generally finding other human beings who have a sense of 'what is going on in the world'.

As for the drug intake, I'd say the most prevailant drug is weed. That's if you want to consider that a drug at a doof instead of it being looked upon as a true peace pipe. 'Hey, sure you can come in and have a bong. Pull up a chair and say hi!'

Doof's farken rock farken!

Jouldah: no thankfully.

Coke only reared its ugly head on the scene pretty big time a few years ago. it started getting more and more used on sydneys oxford st night clubs and made its way to the raves.

Honestly I dont think coke belongs at the raves.

when did it stop being about having fun and more about show??

I guess thats wot u get when things go mainstream.

So a doof is like a rave used to be, so I got that right, but because of the vibe which is the people there and the reasons they are there. I thought that was sort of what I said? The people now have missed the point and are there because its cool to dance all night, where speed helps. Whereas the people used to be there for the gathering, celebrating and connecting of like thinking free minds, where ecstacy and acid helps. Although I said these people were catered for rather than created the vibe, is this where I was wrong wazza? Does the old differ from the new in the intentions of those attending rather than those putting it on or both?

I'm not trying to say how it is and was cause I don't know, I'm just trying to understand.

In my experience, it doesn't matter when you started partying, after a year or two you look back and go "aw, partys today just aren't what they were in the old days..." This phenomenon is brilliantly detailed in the film Human Traffic. :) I think it has a lot to do with the fact that the more you take MDMA, the less special it is, due to the tolerance factor. Once the MDMA experience becomes more pedestrian, you can see through all the crap with a more realistic view (and not through MDMA coloured glasses). Basically, I think you wise up. And that's it.

Then if you are wise, you realise nothing is perfect and you can enjoy partys for what they are - an over priced night out with a couple of dudes getting paid lots of cash to play records, some lights and lasers, plus hundrdeds or thousands of people off chops, some of whom are wearing fur and fluro, others of whom are not. That's all they are.:)

Not at all....

You can definatly see the difference in rave parties in Melbourne between the early 90's....late 90's....And today....

The club culture in Melbourne has also dwindled to a crock of shit....

To say that overuse of drugs killed the feeling is a load of rubbish....To say that you wise up....Who say's you were wise to start off with?!?!? :)

Raves never used to be an overpriced nite out....Most raves I used to attend in the early to mid 90's I never paid a cent to attend....And the raves I paid for....Was basically to see people perform which I had respect for....

I remember at a dance party in 98 paying up to $150 at the door to get into Halycon Nites NYE....But I got to see Carl Cox on 4 decks....And that was worth every cent!

:)

oLd_ScHoOl_RoCkEr: I never said there is no difference between the partys of the "early 90's....late 90's....And today" I have lived through that whole period too you know. Of course there are huge differences between now and 1993. My point was that no matter when you actually start partying, at some point, every person I know has said "it was never this good back in the day..." Irrespective of when the day actually was.

I think you missed my point about the end of the MDMA honeymoon. MDMA tolerance is a documented phenomenon. I can't see how MDMA tolerance can fail to have an effect on party goer's perceptions of the whole experience. You might not agree with the idea, but that hardly means it's "a load of rubbish"

Irespective of the day??!?!? If you started partying back in the ealry 90's how could you look back a couple of years after and say it aint the same?!?!? Look im not flamming ya im just getting confused with what ya said....

Tolerance and depletion of serotonin levels in ur body differ from person to person....People choose to ignore the health hazards with taking illicits....If youve been around drugs for long enuff you will know that your tolerance and serotonin levels severely increase when you dont take illicits for a certain amount of time....

Its not that I don't want to agree with ya....Its just im not making much sense of what ur trying to point out...

:)

Old vs New

For me
1995-97 early 98 = Acid.
98+ to present=E
From 98 acid seemed to vanish...while E' popularity just grew exponentialy.

This changing pattern of drug use (by myself) and thousands of others conversly resulted in a slight change in the scene (rave).

Dirty doof...slowly got replaced with clean kandy....which has in turn become a little dirty.:\ :)

The general growth in dance music has seen audiences become more diversified and mainstream also. I have found this both good and bad. Good in that i found more and more of my friends were coming along to events...but bad in that there was more commercialisation of the music.:\

After doing the 'rave' thing for about 7 or 8 years now, I still enjoy myself...but the types of people I have gone with have changed all the way along my rave-going journey....which is cool.;)
