5mg hydrocodone, .25mg alprazolam, how far apart do I need to space the doses?

Hello, all!

I take therapeutic doses of both hydrocodone and alprazolam, (the hyrdocodone is temporary until my cold-related cough goes away, the alprazolam is a regular medication, I take .5 - .75 mg daily, or sometimes every other day).

I've been trying to hold off on taking alprazolam while I've had severe coughing, but today I have had several panic attacks and couldn't continue with work without taking .25 alprazolam. I took this about 5 PM my time. As I write this, it's 8 PM, and I'm coughing pretty badly (always worse at night for me). I couldn't find any guidance on smaller doses of alprazolam with 5mg of hydrocodone, or how soon hydrocodone can be taken after alprazolam over the course of a day (if at all). So...is it safe to take .25 alprazolam and then take 5mg hydrocodone 4-5 hours later?

Just looking for some guidance on this. Afraid to call my pharmacist for obvious reasons (even though I've got current prescriptions for both). TIA.

I truly feel that you don’t have anything to worry about. You have a low dose of each med. you’ve been taking each one regularly for a while now .. correct?

I’ve been on both without tolerance, and took much more than that.

Keep in mind that this is just my own personal experience. But I think you’re good to go.

I've been taking the alprazolam for a while; I've been on the hydrocodone 3 days.

Thank you! It's a bit relieving. Since I stopped using anything heavily, I tend to freak out about mixing drugs.

yeah I really wouldn’t worry. You might find yourself feeling a bit buzzed if youre opioid naive, but should help you sleep better.

Always best to ask questions. Better safe than sorry!

Hope you start to feel better.
Take care ❤️

There shouldn't be any problem asking your pharmacist or doctor if you have a prescription for both.

Benzos and Opioids can be a very dangerous mix, but that's generally only at high/recreational doses. At medicinal doses they should generally be fine to mix, people are prescribed them both at the same time in some cases.

Those doses are both very low, you'll be alright.

Hey @IGEightyEight :)

First off, Benzodiazepines and Opioids are an extremely dangerous combination. One always must treat these things with serious caution and respect. You're doing great by asking these questions so we're happy to try to help you. You've already had some really great answers here, but I thought I'd throw my hat in the ring as well.

Your Hydrocodone (Vicodin; Lortab) dosage is on the low side of the spectrum. Your dosage of Alprazolam (Xanax) is also pretty low. You described your Benzodiazepine usage in your post. Good for you for maintaining control over your medication. Chronic Benzodiazepine dependence is very gnarly, It is difficult to get off once you are already there. I have read about chronic Benzodiazepine dependence can produce symptoms resembling dementia. Also, after a while, the medication will completely stop working. You will go back to having your baseline panic attacks with the added bonus of needing to take 8mg Alprazolam per day just to be at that place.

Sorry for the D.A.R.E speech. I've known people for whom Benzodiazepines ruined their entire life. I don't want that for anyone. The way you are using your Alprazolam is more responsible than most. I assume you have a good physician, not a "script writer". It's pretty common to walk into a psych office and walk out that day with a script for 30 days of Alprazolam 1mg x3 daily.

There is essentially no danger whatsoever in you taking the medication now or otherwise within a similar window. The very worst case scenario would be taking a nap when you didn't want to. You could take them at the same time if you wanted/needed.

I respect you for going the extra mile to ensure your safety, however, this situation is nothing to worry about.
