5HTP for depression

Eat turkey. Seriously. Add it to your diet. It contains tryptophan (sp?) which is what 5-htp is metabolized into. It is the most natural way of getting the chemical you want. It does make a lot of people drowsy, so try eating turkey a lot for supper, maybe a sandwich with whatever other meal you may be eating. When you buy the pills, they are made completely syntheticaly.
turkey may be the most famous tryptophan containing food, but parmesan cheese has more than twice as much tryptophan. It also has a higher tryptophan/protein ratio :)
I believe elk meat has one of the highest, if not the absolute highest percent of tryptophan of any food. Although not everyone has access to fresh elk meat ;)

If your all going on about tryptophan, why dont you just buy tryptophan pills?

It goes the other way actually. Tryptophan --> 5-htp --> 5-ht (serotonin). If you think you're low on 5-ht, and want to take a supplement to top it up, then 5-htp is the way to go. A lot of tryptophan is lost in the conversion to 5-htp (in that it's used as a normal amino acid most of the time).

See my previous post for my opinion on taking pills for depression :)

@ Dave

So overall would you say 5htp was better or worse for you.

If you could turn back time would you not do it?

It was good for pre/post-loading, but that was about it. It didn't help enough with my depression to make it worthwhile, and while I was taking it I was convincing myself that I was doing something about my problems when I actually wasn't.

I'm not upset that I did it, but I'm annoyed that I did it for so long. If I knew then what I do now, I would go see a psychologist post-haste. Oh, and not take a fuckton of MDXX in a two-month period. My word recall still hasn't recovered :p

Yeh man I know what your saying, MD is the worst thing for depression I swear since I done it I havent been able to feel real happiness since.

Like I remember before I did it I used to get a rush down my spine when listening to music, I havent had that since I did MDMA (about 30-40 times)

OMFG its been 6weeks since ive been using 5htp, and i am taking 1 5htp upon waking and 1before bed.

I honestly havent felt this good in soooooooo long, my mind feels at ease for once and I actually dont have this cloud of doubt/fear/dread above my head anymore.

I wouldnt go far as saying I feel like I used to when I was a happy care free child but there is an enormous improvement in my mood. I just dont understand how a couple of weeks ago I was concemplating killing myself via heroin overdose.

Anyone else really benefited from using 5htp?

Best of all it feels natural and pure!

I did at first. Tolerance builds. Keep in mind that there is a risk of early hydrolysis of 5-htp in the bloodstream at higher doses (especially if there's a lot of Vit B6 floating around) that can cause heart problems down the road.

5htp most definitely works for me, as does l-tryptophan.

the thing with the heart problems due to B6 does worry me though - because Iuse B-complex quite regularly as I believe it to be helpful with energy levels and nutrient absorption. So I try not to take B6 too late in the day, and 5-htp mostly only at night. There is no way I'd stop using this even if it does cause some heart problem..... without it, I seem unable to keep my happiness levels up and I'd rather die a bit younger and live happily than be miserable and die old and miserable.

Regarding St. John's Wort... it may work as an MAOI... but if it does, it can't be a strong one... I have been using it at higher-than-recommended doses now for a few months, and when I use other drugs such as tryptamines or phenethylamines or even amphetamines, I have no problems whatsoever... but St John's Wort doesn't seemall too effective for my depressive detendencies. 5-HTP and/or L-tryptophan work WAY better... way way better. Post-MDMA and such they're spiritual lifesavers... yes, I'd go that far!

I'm pretty sure that that is the stuff my Mum tried. We found it worked pretty well, I mean, it gave her a lot of motivation to get up and do things, which was half the problem most of the time. Only thing was, the effect didn't seem to last longer than a week or so.

I've been taken Ginko Biloba for around a year and I swear it is the best thing I have ever done. I wouldn't take anything else now.

Part about mom..placebo,obviousuly

bighooter someone already mentioned earlier that senior members agreed eating foods containing tryptophan is MORE EFFECTIVE than 5htp.

I personally dont combine 5HPT with another Anti depressent. Risk of Seratonin storm is what i've read about as far as risks, but really in reality, thats not why i dont do it. I just figure stacking things that up your seratonin isnt nessecary. Stick to the AD your doc prescribed IMO.

^Do you mean serotonin syndrome? Or are you actually scared this guy will come to your house and fuck you up night? ;)

storm, syndrome, same thing, both bad ;] but i dont want that guy to come over either. In conclusion. Dont mix 5HTP, with Anti Depressants, that guy may come. :p
