50 minutes chanel V

At the moment, I'm reviewing ALL of the literature that has EVER been published, in ANY language, on pill purity and pill testing. Draino, or sodium hydroxide, has never, ever been reported in any pill described by any agency anywhere in the world that keeps any records about pill purity. Period. Lots of other dangerous, and potentially lethal pharmaceutical chemicals have, but resorting to fabrication to scare people is rubbish science. I gave an interview for the programme too, on the understanding that they were doing a piece on pill-testing, and that it would not be sensationalised. I will be very interested to speak with whoever is draino pills have ever been on the market...

I wouldn't fucking use draino for basification since it has powdered alumium in it. Though at franklins they sell pure caustic soda for 3.30, which is a lot cheaper than draino ;P

Supermarket NaOH is usually listed at 98%, it is not pure.

the ad for this 50 minutes story really shits me- every time it comes on i think it's that "e-talking" song that is sweeeet, but then you realise it's actually an excessively emotive promo that uses a snippet of the song.

BUT i think we should watch the story before whingeing too much about it. i think you've just gotta accept that misleading and provocative promos are a part of mainstream media. in most cases these kind of things are just used to get viewers and then the resulting story is completely different.

i don't like it, but unfortunately we've just gotta deal with it.

Giving Channel V some credit, it wouldn't surprise me if the story was fair and balanced, and that indeed the ad is more of a pisstake of the bullshit and myths surrounding drugs.

(At least that would be in keeping with their usual style...)

They had a little section about meth on 50 minutes at some point...

Basically was "meth is bad bad bad", but it was certainly a lot more objective than most tv-based drug stories. They discussed the good and the bad.

I'd be curious to see this one though.

that's how i read it, anyways. we'll see tomorrow. it should be pretty good. i wasn't interviewed as such, just got to talk to the camera, a lot. look out for a different version on the enlighten site. we'll be ediitng our own version with the raw footage. big props to channel v for letting us do that!

Here is approximately the last third of the show that deals with 'ecstasy'. You can choose between the .mov (quicktime required) dial-up or broadband options. If you are able to set up a mirror for the broadband file please do so and paste the link. c/o Enlighten.

I just watched the re-run of it shown at midday. In summary, I think it was done quite well and was adequately researched and presented.

There was no scaremongering, no drugs are evil garbage etc though they made certain to point out the health risks associated with the drugs in question. They also made it quite clear that they do not condone the use of ilicit drugs though but thats to be expected. The information about Enlighten was good and a worthy thing to put in as Im sure many channel v viewers are of a younger age and might not be aware of testing kits etc

The interviews with Paul Dillon were good, he had valid things to say on all topics and came across as very knowledgable as did John.

I taped it and can answer some more questions if you like.

I just happened to flick onto Channel V today and caught most of the segment.

I too, thought it was done very well. I did notice that the section on meth seemed a lot more negative than the other sections (maybe for good reason?) . For instance a lot more time was spent examining the bad aspects of meth (eg addiction and people arriving at ERs in 'crazy states'.) when compared to the section on cocaine or ecstasy. Did anyone else notice this?

I thought that the whole ecstasy section was very positive, while still warning of health risks etc. Enlighten came across in a very positive light and the segment showed how Enlighten are fighting to keep young people safe and informed while the government is making it hard for them. I really enjoyed watching the show and hope to see more balanced and helpful information like this in the mainstream media.

I thought this was very positive show. Glad to see the mainstream media doing something balanced.

Kudos to Dr Platypus & Johnboy for their excellent appearances on this show :D

Yeah, they definitely showed the seedier side of meth, with that young gent who was fucked up badly by it and the ER doctor interview. They also couldnt resist some tomfoolery by jabba with the bong bit and the tshirt but I spose thats just for the benefit of the target audience and didnt really detract from the overall presentation

i only watched the bit that was on enlighten and i actually thought they did quite a good job with their portrayal of everything on pills. good job to the boys from enlighten :) nice work. good to see people who know what they are talking about trying to make a difference...dont give up!

bluelight even got a mention!

the only thing i didnt like was the "owner" of the trance club saying that introducing pill testing is condoning it and they dont want to be a part of it etc etc and had taken out all the railings in the toilets >>> what a joke. its people like this that stop harm minimisation from getting anywhere.

i think it would be great for australia to move foward and bring harm minimisation as a number one priority like countries like amsterdamn but unfortunately i think we can safely say that it is never going to happen with current governments and old fashined policies.

i can only hope that people from enlighten dont give up hope! keep campaigning and doing what you are doing! great job guys!

why would we give up hope? we've made so many advances in the last year it is amazing. and there's lots more to come.

big thanks to channel v for doing this story. it turned out even better than i imagined. thanks to everyone here for their support and inspiration.

(oh and i gotta say it was pretty funny having drplatypus represented by a funky looking phone. it was very blake's seven looking. :))

Yes, but he also said "Morally it was one of the best ideas that I've heard for a long time".... I believe the point to his statement was that under present rulings, it was not within his interests as a promoter to be seen to support testing, or more specifically, drug taking, in any way.

As a one time promoter I can understand his view. It's the governments which need to be held accountable for "forcing" such a stance, not the promoters. Under the the present pressure, to go any other way is simply self destructive.

To quote a saying from "Layercake" : The art of being a good business man lies in being a good middle man.

So, is it just that hypocrisy rules, or should we see it as survival instinct? For without promoters, where would club life be?

On a brighter note; a big

to JB and drplatypus, and also to the producers of 50 mins. I thought the last segment said alot about the average intelligence and health conscious nature of the typical MDMA user.
