5 tons of marijuana seized in South Texas

on a global level that's a large chunk when you think about how much weed is consumed 8o so many people everywhere are smoking now :)

Sorry, I meant to say .025% of the AMERICAN cannabis supply. This is an informal statistic, since calculating the total annual supply of a controlled substance sold on the black market is extremely difficult. Most sources indicate approximately 10,000-25,000 tons of cannabis are consumed annually in the United States. I calculated .025% using 20,000 tons as an educated guess. The lower numbers are usually based entirely on drug seizures, the great majority of which involve bulk imports, and tend to ignore domestically produced cannabis and overestimate the efficiency of the feds in intercepting imported cannabis. That said, this is completely contrived, pulled from my ass, and should not be taken too seriously. I just wanted to give some perspective as to how insignificant this really is. Sorry, I really should have made that clear.

Here's some reading on the annual US supply of cannabis: http://www.drugscience.org/Archive/bcr4/5Supply.html

Anyway, I'm sure that fed busts are already compensated for by growers and importers as a "cost of doing business". If they bust more, then more will be grown and imported to meet the demand. Shwag price might fluctuate some because of this, but I doubt it is affected much, if at all.

^ I find it hard to believe the USA alone could smoke 50 million pounds of schwag a year. that's a little bit overboard... or a lot...

You can't base the supply on a random government estimate that only 10% is seized. 10% sounds more like a 90's number not a 2011 border homeland security coast guard number...

That was an 18 wheeler full of weed. You can't move much more than that without getting busted at a weigh station by the highway patrol...

I guarantee what got this truck was the K9 alert with subsequent follow up x-ray. The borders are no joke these days. I imagine they get quite a bit more than 10% and at least 90% of the stuff that goes through them is helped in by crooked agents...

I do however completely agree this will not affect supply, and is a small amount to the overall picture. If you read that link further the consumption estimate is a lot lower (only 1000 tons, not 50000)
