So I was talking with someone about opiate withdraws and they told me that they took a 5 hour energy shot and it really helped with the body aches and helped them feel reasonably normal. This made me curious and I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this or had heard anything about it as well.

I'd imagine taking a competent multivitamin along with a well balanced diet would be even better.

The five hour shot is basically a bunch of caffeine and B-vitamins. The B-vitamins are probably what your friend is feeling.

Caffeine, however (and most stimulants) aren't recommended for opiate withdrawal, as they can make some of the symptoms worse.

You're better off eating a good meal and taking multivitamins. Take a B-complex vitamin on top of that, and you'll have a better and more healthy alternative to the 5 hour energy shot.

^ i thought 5 hour energy had no caffeine and that was the point......???

^ there are different formulations. Some have caffeine and some don't.

I'd second everything NT said above. I would never touch stimulants in opioid withdrawal because it made the restlessness and insomnia worse.

^Exactly. The more commonly found/sold ones do contain caffeine. I believe it is around 100mg for the regular ones, and the more powerful ones most likely contain 150mg or so. [Source]

While I was unable to even find the amount in milligrams on the 5-Hour Energy website itself, it simply listed the caffeine amount as "comparable to a leading cup of coffee", which is a pretty vague measurement, as a cup of coffee is anywhere from 65 to 175mg of caffeine. [Source]

All that aside, I've found that any amount of caffeine or the stronger amphetamine-family of stimulants during opiate withdrawal just makes it a lot worse and is not recommended.

I'm going to close this thread because it seems like a pretty clear answer, OP, feel free to PM me if you have any other questions.
