2C-X and Beta Blocker?

I was curious the other day about whether the use of a beta blocker (metoprolol tartrate, specifically) could be useful to relieve some of the hypertension and shaky body load of 2C-E. Would it possibly help with vasoconstriction and/or physical anxiety symptoms?

OR, am I totally clueless and this is in fact a terrible idea?

Thanks!

Do you take a beta blocker regularly? Have you tested your blood pressure while on 2C-E?

Does anyone know if Xanax and 2C-E is a bad combo?

No, I do not take a beta blocker regularly. I would recommend that anyone who is prescribed a beta blocker for control of hypertension should avoid 2C-E, as it does raise blood pressure and this could be dangerous in someone with a fragile circulatory system.

I have never measured my blood pressure while on 2C-E, but intend to at some point. I am fairly certain blood pressure is increased due to the 5HT2B agonism of the drug, which constricts blood vessels.

I am primarily interested in the anxiolytic effects of the beta blocker, especially in regards to the alleviation of physical trembling, etc. from the drug.

Re: 2C-E and Xanax, this should not be dangerous to my knowledge. I have heard of many such combinations. I would make a thread to allow more knowledgable members to weigh in, however.

To my knowledge, vasoconstriction via 5h2b agonism should not interact with blocked vasoconstriction via a2 adrenal antagonism.

Well, benzodiazepines can certainly target mental anxiety, but I was looking into beta blockers partly because of their use in treating benign essential tremor.

Is there any theoretical danger in attempting this combo, or is it just likely to ineffective?

I may give this a try, unless anyone chimes in with a safety concern. Based on the binding affinities I've seen (and as noted above), 2C-E only has affinity for a2C receptors, but I wonder if perhaps the blockage of endogenous catecholamines at beta sites may offer a measure of anxiolysis?

Plus, 2C-E is known to act as a releasing agent of DA and NE, though to a rather limited extent. Perhaps the beta antagonism could cancel the anxiogenic effect of this out?

Thanks for everyone's input. I will report my results if anyone is interested.

I believe there could be a safety concern regarding the combination of an alpha adrenergic agonist and a beta blocker. Selective beta blockers are generally contraindicated in case of stimulant overdose because they may in fact increase hypertension. Not sure whether it's relevant for moderate doses of 2C-E, but I thought I'd mention it anyway.

Quoting from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beta_blocker:
Beta blockers must not be used in the treatment of cocaine, amphetamine, or other alpha adrenergic stimulant overdose. The blockade of only beta receptors increases hypertension, reduces coronary blood flow, left ventricular function, and cardiac output and tissue perfusion by means of leaving the alpha adrenergic system stimulation unopposed.

I was just about to post something along those lines after further research. It seems that this could actually make vasoconstriction worse. Good eye.
