2024 US Presidential Election

props to him for totally owning it and leaning right into the racism of the right. the crowd loved it, obviously, but trump's not trying to win over those people. they're voting for him no matter what he says or does.

but, but, he was only joking! lighten up.

when tim walz says musk is a dipshit? big problem! should not be allowed!
when tony hinchcliffe says puerto rico is an island of garbage? no problem. muh free speech!

i just can't imagine, from a campaign strategy point of view, anybody thinks it's going to win him undecided voters at this stage.

Tony Hinchcliffe is one of my all time favorite comedians, but I can't believe he did his typical insult style of comedy at that MAGA rally. He's getting cancelled fucking hard... he made the fatal mistake of crossing the line between comedian and politics. All of his jokes were really low effort, too, compared to his usual. I can't believe he agreed to do that, and additionally I can't believe Trump's campaign vetted his jokes and allowed him to do that.

You can't do racist jokes at a rally, that's crossing a line that shouldn't be crossed. I think he had innocent intentions, and he's not racist, but he did not think that through at all.

I think you are spot on Snafu. The fact that he said it at a legitimate political rally changes the context completely. He wasn't in a comedy club. Do I think he's a racist or something? I seriously doubt it... but you aren't 'doing comedy". And you should've known people weren't going to appreciate it.

I think his response here was weak too. And aoc made a good point.

The "I made/make fun of everybody", which is true, works 99.99% of the time. But not in that context. That's the one stage where it doesn't work... especially for an insult comic who isn't afraid to say the most controversial jokes you can think of.

It just boggles my mind how he was even allowed to say those jokes in the first place. Who the fuck is running the show!?

It also didn't serve him well that he made fun of every race except white people.

I would defend him any day, but that one is almost impossible to. Sucks man, he has like the #1 live podcast in the world right now... I love KillTony so much.

I noticed this response in the thread. They obviously don't get why self deprecating jokes are inherently different:

as i have learned, he could have been talking about u.s. citizens (given the wall borders two countries).

if you think he was talking about mexicans stealing, maybe you're the racist one :)

am i doinitrite?

A lot of people not only don't appreciate comedy, they don't understand it on a fundamental level. I pity their souls.

Life is too absurd to get upset over jokes, but of course, there will always be BAD comedy... which is usually sophomorish, or out of place, or actually hateful.

He's repeating one of his own standup jokes. Not sure why he refers to himself in 3rd person. But it can be clearly inferred he is talking about Mexicans.

I think Ali was using the "maybe if you think it's racist, then you're the racist" thing ironically to prove a point.

But yes, pretty much all George Lopez does is self deprecating Mexican jokes.

At least John Stewart gets it. I'm glad he saw Hinchcliffe's bit for what it was and at least partially defended him as a fellow comedian.

“Now obviously in retrospect, having a roast comedian come to a political rally a week before election day and roasting a key voting demographic, probably not the best decision by the campaign politically,” Stewart responded. “But to be fair, the guy’s really just doing what he does. I mean, here he is at the Tom Brady roast a few months ago.”

Stewart played a montage of Hinchcliffe telling a string of shock-heavy jokes at the roast, and responded, “Yes, of course, terrible. Boo, yes,” before cracking up.

“There’s something wrong with me,” Stewart confessed. “I find that guy very funny. I’m sorry, I don’t know what to tell you.”

“I mean, bringing him to a rally and have him not do roast jokes? That’d be like bringing Beyoncé to a rally and not have…” Stewart faltered, referring to how Beyoncé didn’t perform at her recent Texas rally appearance with Kamala Harris.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday docketed the appeal filed Sunday by Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares after a federal appeals court declined to overrule a lower court’s decision to force Virginia to add approximately 1,600 noncitizens back to its voter rolls.

According to the Supreme Court’s online portal, the case was docketed on Monday after Virginia submitted its appeal for the high court to reverse a lower court’s decision on Sunday.

Once the case was docketed, Chief Justice John Roberts demanded the plaintiffs behind the lawsuit provide a response arguing why noncitizen voters should not be removed from the voter rolls by 3 p.m. on Tuesday

and people say nuance is dead in u.s. politics

"Kamala Harris is the C-word"

Elon Musk’s America PAC uses crude, sexist attack against Harris in new ad

"Elon Musk’s America PAC shared a video calling Kamala Harris “the c-word” on X, the social media platform also owned by the tech billionaire.

The narrator in the 34-second ad repeatedly calls Harris a “c-word” and says other elected officials whose photos are displayed in the ad — Democrats President Joe Biden, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) — are all “c-words.”
