2017 Trump Presidency Thread

It's been suggested that the shooter in texas must be white, because trump didn't call them a "degenerate animal".

I don't mean to sound too cynical, but i'd be surprised if this turned out to be untrue.

Pretty fucking depressing to see such a double standard - surely killing is killing?
Even demographics of murderer seem to be treated (or spoken about by the president) differently...
I'm sure if this was a white person it will be written off as a "lone wolf", not a terrorist (even if they were motivated by ideology or politics)

Oh, woops, no 26 dead in a Texas Church.

See, you take a nap and you lose track of which mass shooting people are talking about.

So just off my head, Vegas 58, 3 at the WalMart, and 26 in Texas. So 87 dead Americans in the last month by gun nuts, 8 by "Middle Eastern"/"Brown"/Muslim in years.

Humans like specific things to be afraid of or the burden of mortality would have us hiding in corners. When a threat is amorphous and everywhere (ie. The lone nutcase ala Vegas) we tend to push it to the back of our minds. When a threat can be clearly identified (ie. Muslim terrorist) we focus on that despite the former category representing the more prevalent threat by far.

We're crazy animals.

Yeah but that's why Jesus or Darwin gave us reason. Reason--and our innate fearlessness of vacuum cleaners--is what separates us from the animals.

Is it too soon to make a Kill Bill joke?
Yes it is. I won't.

So are we supposed to accept monthly mass shootings as the cost of the 2nd amendment? I mean at some point shit is going to have to change right?

By the sounds of it, the killer was accosted by a "good guy with a gun" - but it didn't stop him from slaying a church full of people.
So much for that theory.

Plenty of options the way things are. You just need to get the GOP out of congress, or convince their base to shut up and put some basic controls in.

^^ Their House whip Scalise got shot after the House voted to repeal and "replace" the ACA (Obamacare).
He's still pro-gun, although he was momentarily terrified of bleeding out after being shot. And his NRA-lobbied party is still pro-gun.
As I posted about fairly extensively, the Swiss have a decent compromise system. It's far better than ours.

It's also easier to be anti-gun control when you have secret service, the capital police, and your own private security and escorts.

oh, how charming - he blames the mentally ill, with no fucking evidence.

the short-fingered vulgarian doesn't have a single redeeming quality in my eyes. he's a puddle of trash water and facelift scars.

the last thing people living with mental illness need is more stigma from this fucking clown.
it's creepy how out of perspective his response is to "mass shootings" (by white men) vs "terrorism" (by muslims)

i mean - check out this graph - which is the bigger issue here?

Yeah, it will change by getting even worse.

Don't worry guy, this is not a guns situation. Thank god Trump cleared that up eh? :\

The Republicans won't even do anything about banning bump stocks (used in Las Vegas shooting to increase firing rate of semiautomatic to simulate full automatic firing rate) or stricter enforcement of existing laws restricting gun ownership (i.e., heavy policing of illegal gun trafficking and background checks for ownership) after two high casualty shootings.

The White House is leading the way in inappropriate reactions.
