Still 3 months to go before it even fucking starts and it feels to me - judging from the saturation of Olympics-"stories" in the UK media which is only going to get (even) worse as the corporate advertising orgy, sorry, the 2012 London Olympic Games edges ever closer - like the 2012 Olympic Games have been happening for several years already.

Fuck the Olympics. Fuck the opening ceremony and fuck all the bullshit platitudes emanating from the politicians about the glorious "legacy" this event will leave in its wake, and how it is going to benefit countless communities living nearby the many vastly expensive and taxpayer-funded newly built stadiums, swimming pools, cycling-tracks etc for years to come. (As if all the fat fucks in this country - which is what, the 3rd or 4th fattest country in the world isn't it? - are going to suddenly stop eating pies, chips ands crisps and go jogging everyday from now on simply because London got the 2012 Olympics; and furthermore the impression is given that the many local communities near Olympic venues will benefit from free use of these admittedly world-class sporting facilities from now on when in reality I'm quite sure that this is something of a myth and in reality it won't change very much at all because at the end of day who are the main sponsors of these games? Whose logos are going to be everywhere you look when watching these games on TV? Why those champions of clean-living and healthy eating McDonalds and Coca-Cola....)

And fuck the vast sums of public money which have been spent on the Olympics when the main beneficiaries of it all won't be the general public but rather the rich folk who run the companies such as G4S (the security firm in charge of all venue security); the construction companies awarded the contracts to build the venues; the companies who will end up running the venues for private profit after the games etc etc - and of course all the shareholders of said companies.

Please don't flame me for being unpatriotic as that is not my argument: I'm merely exasperated by how something like the Olympics has changed throughout the 20th Century from being a fabulous celebration of athletic prowess (originally intended to be for non-professional athletes and sports folk) and, just as importantly if not more so, at the same time an event where so many different countries can come together - setting political differences aside - and celebrate diversity to what it is today: an apparent opportunity to print money for many different companies and organisations with even companies who manufacture rocket-launchers getting a piece of the pie..... (see http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2012...london-reaction for full story).

Yeah I was going to have a rant about the Olympics too, you beat me to it. Was watching it on BBC News, they have a special flight bringing the torch from Greece to UK, you saw them on the flight strapping the olympic flame (encased in lanterns / lamps) into seats. They talked about how they split the flame into 4 just to make sure that it never fully goes out at any time. What a load of bollocks, they reported on the news it went out a few times recently in Greece because of weather. I doubt they actually let the flame stay lit while the flight is in the air and the whole thing is just a complete waste of time and money and is pointlessly over the top.

They're letting drug cheats come back into sports after just 2 years now though.

Yeap Fuck the Olympics. The only city that ever really benefited from the games, was Barcelona. I think London is a post-Olympics Athens waiting to happen. Over budget ---- DEBT , DEBT

Fuck everything associated with the olympics, sport or this jubilee I keep hearing about, fuck it all.

If it's any comfort you beat me to it with mentioning the "flame on the flight" story........... it was hearing this very news story, sorry, blatant lie, on the radio that enraged me sufficiently to start this thread.

Every petrol station and supermarket appears to be selling union jack tat - don't know if its for the olympics or the jubilee. Don't really know or care, I don't relate to that kinda patriotism or imagery.

As far as I can see there's not a lot happening regarding the games or queenie north of the border apart from the tat.

Living in Scotland has its benefit :-)

Do you mean to say that Coca Cola and Mcdonalds are trying to associate their brands with the Olympics because they are extremely unhealthy products? :sus:

The thing that pisses me off most about the Olympics this year is that I am just as disconnected from it as I was when it was in China but for some reason i'm expected to get into the Olympic spirit because it's on the same island as me. If anything I am more excited about the Brazilian Olympics. I hate the way that it is meant to show that Britain is still here, but all we are presenting is a feable squeak compared to the rawr from the 2 countries our Olympics happens to be sandwiched between. I don't particularly give a shit that private companies building it or that they will be running the security so long as we get a better service for less, which is almost always the case in private vs public.

^ I get this feeling too, the last olympics were fucking incredible, there's not really any way we can match up to them.

Nazi-edited. ;)

Are you referring to the Nazi symbolism in the Olympics? Apparently the torch isn't even a Greek thing rather more of a Nazi propaganda tool.

You have been brainwashed by Marxists to despise your country and culture. I hate my country and its values therefore I'm progressive and forward thinking.
But yeah I do agree the Olympics is a load of bollocks, oh well it's a spectacle and brings people together at least.

Not sure how serious you're being here but just in case I think SamhainGrim was referring to the documentary/films made by Leni Riefenstahl in 1938 "Olympia I" & "Olympia II" in reference to my misspelt thread title (which has now been corrected)....

And as for whether or not I've been brainwashed by Marxists to despise my country and culture? I so hope you're being humourous, and if not then think what you like because I make a point of not feeding trolls...... either way thanks for posting.

^no I was talking to Mr Smokes Blunts. as quoted because he said he couldn't possibly feel a part of something because it's on the shitty little damp island in which we live. Everywhere else is better and we are scum etc. And I didn't notice the edit but yes, there is a lot of nazi symbolism in the olympics, check it out.

Er no. Not at all. I was merely pointing out that the tried and tested advertising techniques employed nowadays by multinational corporations such as McDonalds & Coca-Cola (see the page of the official 2012 London Olympics here http://www.london2012.com/about-us/the-people-delivering-the-games/olympic-partners/index.html for the complete lists of "olypmic-partners") will probably winout as far as the battle for the hearts and minds of the majority of British people and that not many folk are likely to be inspired to give up their McDonalds meal or can of Coca-Cola and take up regular exercise after watching some Olympics running on the TV this summer...... and that I call bullshit when I hear anyone such as a politician or corporate lackey sorry, national running treasure, like Seb Coe, earnestly stating to a camera or print journalist that the 2012 Olympics are great for the country because they're going to get us all more interested in doing sports rather than simply watching sports.

The mere fact that McDonalds & Coca-Cola are referred to as Olympic-Partners [surely it should be Olympic-Advertisers?] (see webpage link above) should tell us all we need to know about whether the Olympics are really much more than a massive corporate spectacle with some sports thrown in almost as an afterthought......

My bad. No offence intended.

My thoughts exactly. I don't give a fuck about it. It's a horrendous waste of money.

The Commonwealth Games on the other hand, that's at least doing two good things. Giving me something interesting to look at off my mate's balcony as they're constructing some big fuck off ampi-theatre type thing next to the SECC. You get to look at cranes swinging about building mad shit while smoking a joint instead of just staring at building & bridges. I think it's meant to be used for gymnastics or some other non event but it's all being built with no pillars supporting the roof (so all seats have a fully unrestricted view) & it's all acoustically tested (or whatever you'd call it) so that after the games it's going to become the main large gig venue to replace the (shockingly bad) SECC.

Where did I say I hate my country or my culture? I hate the fact that our country is a mere shadow of it's former self and that every day that goes past we lose a little more of our standing in the world. The shitness of our Olympics is just going to be evidence of this. It's like you have never read a single politics related post of mine before or something.

I'm not really part of the tin foil hat brigade when it comes to the advertising at the Olympics. I don't like being advertised to, but I certainly don't think they wanted the olympics so that they could advertise on behalf of corporations instead of some other country. Someone was always going to host it. It's just a way of offsetting the ridiculous cost of all of those stadiums that need to be built because people from almost every country in the world will be coming here to spectate and take part. I mean when they awarded it to us there were several other countries representatives crying - do you think they were crying because they didn't get to plaster McDonalds logos all over their major cities or what?
