2012 - 2013 Football Thread

Well if your putting all your hopes into a player who hasnt played for 16 months then it speaks volumes for the rubbish england are producing at youth level.

I seriously cannot think of ONE player who came back from a 16 month layoff who was even half the player he used to be ( hell the likes of Rosicky , Pato and Woodgate cant even manage it after 6 months) So I wouldnt get my hopes up.

Theirs been a few exceptions to that . But at under 21 it doesn't bode well for the lad . I really hope he makes it.

Often when a quality player gets a L/T injury they have to adapt their game . At 21 your still finding your game .

hahaha nice!

Lionel Messi: “At La Masia, his name was mentioned a lot. In some ways, he was one of our teachers.”

Ronaldo came back from 2 cruciate knee injurys and won the world cup finishing as top scorer and world player of the year.

Wilshere's still very young so he has a chance but yeah its very possible he'll be dogged by more injuries

Ronaldo did indeed come back , but the Ronaldo of 2002 was hardly the one of 1997 , albeit I could have played up front for Brazil in the 2002 world cup and finished top scorer. The injuries certainly robbed him of his pace although his finishing was as good as ever.
Robert Prosinkecki came back from a really bad thigh injury when he had just signed for Real Madrid from Red Star Blegrade and ended up being a great player.

One thing in Wilshers favour is that his game is not about pace or anything, Hopefully he can come back and be like our Pirlo type of player, our midfield general.

Lionel Messi: “At La Masia, his name was mentioned a lot. In some ways, he was one of our teachers.”

They used that same Quote about Gerald Vanenberg as well, a lot of what Barca trot out is political rubbish.

No doubt Scholes was a great player though, Zidane said he was the best player for a generation and if he was French they would have idolised him andhe would have loved to play with him , although he probably said that about certain German,Italian and Spanish players as well, depending on what newspaper or reporter he was talking to.

No they or Messi didn't. I can't find the quotes anyway. Okay I will post some more quotes; he gets underrated to fuck in England:

Alonso
“Fans in Spain rate him very highly and I admire him a huge amount. To me Paul is a role model. He is the best midfielder I’ve seen in the last 15 or 20 years.”

Best
“The boy can play”

Charlton
“Paul Scholes is my favourite player. He epitomises the spirit of Manchester United and everything that is good about football.”

Davids
“Every one of us is just trying to become as good as him. Everyone can learn from Paul Scholes”

Fabregas
“He is the one whose level I aspire to. He is the best player in the Premier League.”

Ferdinand
“Paul Scholes, aka Sat Nav, went from a scoring midfielder to a dictator of the game (changed his game while still at top of the game). Genius.”

Figo
“I’m star-struck when I see Paul Scholes because you never see him. On the pitch you can’t catch him. Off the pitch he disappears.”

Giggs
“I have played with some great players during my time at United but I would have to put Paul Scholes down as the best.”

Guardiola
“He is the best midfielder of his generation. I would have loved to have played alongside him.”

Henry
“I can’t understand why Scholes has never won the player of the year award. He should have won it long ago. Maybe it’s because he doesn’t seek the limelight like some of the other ‘stars’.”

Law
“He’s the best all-round. A joy to watch.”

Lippi
“Paul Scholes would have been one of my first choices for putting together a great team.”

Maradonna
“His technique is unique.”

Mourinho
“Why isn’t he playing for England? It is crazy. Only in England. Scholes is a great, great player. So experienced and still, for me, one of the best in the world in midfield. Manchester United are lucky to have him.”

Nasri
“Sad to hear Paul Scholes is retiring, great player, world class player, the English Zizou.”

Pallister
“When you talk about the greats of Manchester United, he’s up there with Georgie Best, Bryan Robson, Ryan Giggs and Bobby Charlton just purely for the amount of medals that he’s won, he’s going to be greatly missed by Manchester United.”

Pele
“If he was playing with me, I would score so many more.”

Ronaldinho
“I want to pass like him. Who taught him how to do that?”

Ronaldo
“Scholes is the best i’ve played with and he helped me a lot when I was young. He’s amazing.”

Rooney
“The best player I’ve played with or against.”

Schevchenko
“They have two of the world’s best young players in Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney, but the player who most impresses me is Paul Scholes. He is United’s most important player, he makes most things happen on the field.”

Shearer
“If you ask footballers to pick out the player they most admire, so many of them will pick Paul Scholes.”

Xavi
“In the last 15 to 20 years the best central midfielder that I have seen — the most complete — is Scholes. I have spoken with Xabi Alonso about this many times. Scholes is a spectacular player who has everything. He can play the final pass, he can score, he is strong, he never gets knocked off the ball and he doesn’t give possession away. If he had been Spanish then maybe he would have been valued more.”

Zidane
“My toughest opponent? Scholes of Manchester. He is the complete midfielder. You rarely come across the complete footballer, but Scholes is as close to it as you can get.’”

Iniesta
“I love Paul Scholes – I ran up to him at Wembley [after the Champions League final last year] to get his shirt and wish him good luck. It’s on the wall at my house!”

I guess none of those quotes were referring to his tackling ability.
Shame he was such a thug

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=doO2GGRR7Mc

BTW 90% of that list played in the premiership, apart from Iniesta and Zidane and Pele

So its only natural that they would wax lyrical about Scholes( our only borderline/world class player)
Its the oldest trick in the media book , say something nice about the locals to ingratiate yourself.
Just like Ian Rush said Careca was one of his favourite players to the Italian Media when they both moved to Serie A at the same time.

Later on he admitted Juventus Media office had told him to say that ahead of the game against Caraca's Napoli and he hardly knew who the bloke was .

Have you read his book botfly ?

My very good friend . His uncle is Ivan Ponting, the guy that helped him write it. He has been involved with UTD. for Decades . My pal get's a few tickets he's been a red since we were like 5 years old it was his Uncle that got him in that influenced him.
His Uncle also did JS Parks book . Apparently not the most interesting guy ! I think the book only came out on the Net.

Xavi, Maradona and Ronaldinho as well. He wasn't known for his tackling which is only a small part of being a footballer anyway. ''Such a thug'' you make it sound like he's Joey Barton. And most of the quotes would be from prem players seeing as you tend to play against foreign sides? Not to mention he was pushed out of the national side. Check out some of his more positive stuff like his passing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=69gwR8CcTL0You

Nah not read his book, I'd rather just watch footballers play tbh. Didn't even know he had a book he's that quiet. Might have a read though just to get an insight into his mind.
Ji Sung Park has a book as well lol? He's a legend; not the most able but gave it all he got which is why we call him Three Lung Park. :D

You would get on well with My Friend n his Uncle. Biggest Man U fans that i now irl.

We went to the Champions League game Vs Basle last year it was great fun for me as a neutral . I've only been their once before and that was with the same guys but back in 1986.

That was the season West Ham could of won The League & probably won't get a better chance . My favourite season that one 1985/86. Most West Ham fans to young to see Moore & the 60's team will agree.

fuck 1986 I see why you're into your old old skool hip hop shit :D. I'm more of an armchair fan admittedly have only been to a handful of games but all proper United fans know Scholes is what kept us at the top in recent years. Last year's CL was a fucking farce one of the reason Scholes came back from retirement I think. We thought we were too good. Am still mad at the year before when we got raped by Barca and Scholes only came on in like the 70th minute and we looked much better afterwards; he just gets our flow going. I hope we can turn Powell Kagawa and Cleverely etc into something remotely similar. We're doing a diamond formation from now I think this wing lark we always do doesn't work so well against the better teams.

Are you a United fan? Glad you admit he's England's best player I was just getting confused at you playing devils advocate or something. I'm not saying he's the best ever soccer player or owt I just think he's one of the best midfielders ever but hasn't been appreciated enough in England.

Scholes was a top player in 98, but thats not the root of the problem
I never saw Scholes DRIBBLE past a player, in fact since Waddle and Gazza and Le Tissier we had nobody similar. Joe Cole could have been one but it was coached out of him

Scholes still is a top player and still better than most it's sad to say or is it? 38 is the new 28 it seems. He adapted and got better at his passing once he become less explosive. He reads the game like no-one else. Dribbling past players is overrated, out-witting players and positioning is what opens up play and gets goals. But yeah English mentality is to rely on brute force and speed for the most part still.

Feking hell we dont look too good here.

We should be trouncing them reallly, just read their most expensive player ever cost £4.3 Million.
We have sold trash like Michael Bridges and Emile Heskey for more than that.

Mate are you serious? The EPL has lost itself up its own arse with wages and transfer fees, they don't mean absolutely shit. Going by your logic Andy Carroll should be almost as good as Ronaldo or Messi, while he's shite. Stewart Downing cost 20 million and couldn't score or put a cross right if his life depended on it. There's a lot of over priced garbage in English football. If some of those Polish lads had an English name they could sell in the EPL for ten times as much.

Too right the EPL is the most overhyped league in the world. There are some good players who cost a lot but theres more shite that cost a lot too. I think England suffer in every major championship the most as thinking their good and realising their muck when they get there. No major tournament win in 46 years is quite bad for a major football nation

My point was that Heskey and Bridges are garbage and still cost more than the most expensive players in Polish history. ie Meaning that our players are indeed over rated. On paper we should be trouncing them but alas England is the only nation that plays games on paper before they step out onto the grass, as proven by the Sun and Mirror newspapers thinking we have won any major tournament before we have kicked a ball.
England are 22-1 for Brazil 2014, I wouldnt bet on them at 222-1

I'm not having much fun this season again as an Ipswich Town fan.
I think we are currently second from bottom of the league with a team that seems to be made up of players that all on short term loan contracts.
It doesn't help that our arch rivals Norwich City are still a league above us even if they aren't having a great season either.
Oh well, there is always next season I guess. (repeat ad finitum)
