2009 MLB thread! play ball...

thats why tim lincecum will be gone after this year

Actually, as much as I'd like for that to happen, Lincecum won't be leaving San Francisco after this year. Once again, you've proven you're just stupid.

Anybody who considers themselves a big fan of MLB, which you have proclaimed to be in the past, knows that when a player is drafted and signed the team that drafted them controls the rights to that player for six years. Lincecum was drated in 2006, so the Giants control his rights until 2012. This means Lincecum cannot become an outright free agent until then. At this point in his career, the only ways Lincecum will see a substanial raise over his 2009 salary of $650,000 will be if the Giants sign him to a long-team deal, or, since he is now eligible for it, he can go through the arbitration process to get higher paying one year deals.

So, unless Brian Sabean loses his mind and trades him away, or he gets hooked on crack and gives up baseball, Tim Lincecum will be in a Giants uniform until at least 2012. Seeing as how Giants management has already labeled him "The Franchise" and he has already won a Cy Young before before the age of 25, it won't be much of a surprise when the Giants give him the biggest contract for a pitcher in MLB history. By 2012, they will only have one year left on Barry Zito's ridiculous contract. However, Matt Cain will be up for a new deal after 2011, so it'll be interesting to see how the Giants plan on approaching that situation.

^ good post. what up, d? the a's are so up and down just now - i think about when i see the score most nights.

in my mlb world beckett pitched an absolute blinder for his 100th career win. the red sox now have two league-leading 11-game winners and are three ahead of the yankees heading into the break. what are the yankees going to do about their hapless pitching?

alasdair

The Cubs may not have won shit in 100+ years, but there is something hilarious about the White Sox winning the pennant in 2005 and the entire city of Chicago doesn't care. :)

cuz no one gives a shit about the sox there a bunch of bitches that got lucky one year fuck them

Yeah, the A's are pretty damn terrible this year. It's beyond frustrating and confusing. All the guys who were brought in to help bolster the offense have been huge disappointments.

Giambi is hitting below .200 and can't catch up to fastballs anymore the way he used to. Pitches he used to square up on and put in play he now fouls straight back, if he can even make contact. It's time to accept that his career is pretty much done. It's time to let Daric Barton take over first base again. I know he only hit .226 as a rookie last year, but he's only 23 and he was once the top prospect in the organization.

Matt Holliday has shown he's capable of being a great hitter, but I think it's obvious his power numbers have suffered from not playing in Colorado. As much as I like him and his abilities, it won't be a sad dad when he's traded, unless Beane decides he'll take the two draft picks as compensation for losing Holliday as a free agent after the season ends.

Orlando Cabrera has been hitting much better as of late and has raised his average about 20 points in the past three weeks, but he started off slow. That was a bit expected since O-Cab has always been a second half player, but the A's have dug themselves in too deep of a hole for him to really make a difference now.

The strange part about this season is that the offense was expected to be the strong point, while the pitching was seen as a huge question mark due to all the youngsters in the rotation. The oldest, Dallas Braden (who has been pitching pretty damn well BTW) is only 25, and the starting rotation has been among the best in the American League. So, keeping true to the form of most of the past half-decade, the pitching kicks ass and the hitting is lacking.

There have been games where the pitching has been excellent and the bats are quiet, and then other games where the reverse is the case. It's been pretty rare this season that the A's have been able to have both the pitching and hitting do their job in the same game. This season is pretty much done for since the A's are 12 back at the break, but it's never over til' its over, the future is very bright. Now, if only the A's could get more guys who can hit the fucking ball! (Besides Suzuki, Sweeney, Kennedy and Cust that is).

Los Angeles Baby!

DODGERS 100% @ the end of October.

It will be the PERFECT birthday present to me too!

God, I love the Home Run Derby! Prince Fielder is a fucking MONSTAR! I know Josh Hamilton is hurt, but if he's healthy enough to play in the game, why not participate in the Derby? As great as the rest of the guys were, watching the Derby KING (Hamilton) observe from the dugout was a bit upsetting.

Anyway, I hope the game is dope. GO A.L.!

My sister's friend (Jeremy Wells) got picked up by Oakland. I wonder how he's doing or if he is even playing.

He must suck if he got picked up by Oakland. ;)

In the world of sports there are certain players who can be instantly identified and bring back countless memories of greatness when you mention just a name. Ruth. Jordan. Gretzky. Rice. Today, and until the end of my life, when I hear the name Rickey, I'll always think of the best damn ball player I ever had the pleasure of watching, both in person and on TV.

As a young kid growing up in the Bay Area in the late 80s/early 90s, when Rickey ruled the base paths and the Oakland A's were what the New York Yankees are today, I always had the feeling that something magical was going to happen every time I watched Rickey and the A's play.

We'll never see another player like Rickey. Nobody will ever even come close.
