2005 Mlb!

Oh and BTW a skillfully thrown spitter is a devestating pitch. If the majority of the pitchers were doctoring their balls, offensive numbers would go down much like steroids have made them go up.

#1 There's a bit of a difference between the spitter and injecting yourself with hormones to grow to Hulk like sizes and hit the ball upwards of 30 feet further than you normally would.

#2 I think you're a bit off, SC, in saying that any player would take anything to get an edge. There are still tons upon tons of great players who opted not to take steroids, and to take an honest approach to the game.

I agree 100%

You're right, there is a difference. MLB enforces the rules when they catch a pitcher fucking with a ball, but they turn the other way when their players suddenly mysteriously grow to Hulk-like sizes and hit the ball upwards of 30 feet further (which i think is a bit of embellishment) than they normally would.

STEROIDS ARE ILLEGAL!!! THEY WERE BREAKING THE LAW!!! Spitting on a baseball is not illegal. LOL.

Anyway, I'm not saying it isn't partially MLB's fault but, the players are more accountable in my opinion. These are grown fucking men doing something illegal to become better at a game. Spitting on a baseball isn't as bad as taking steroids.

Also, if you've played sports before you know everyone cheats a little. "If you ain't cheatin, you ain't tryin," BUT there is a line and they crossed it. You can't compare spitting on a ball to taking roids. That's like comparing a basketball player who flops to a basketball player who's on roids lol.

In real life, every since this whole steroid thing began, all I've been saying is I hope it isn't true. I'm not even a fan but, because of my last boss I really started enjoying the game. I think all of this really sucks for the real baseball fans. You in no way can justify doing something illegal to become better at your sport.

I'm not sure if you misconstrued what I was saying, Poste. I'm pretty much agreeing with what you're saying. There's a huge difference between spitting on a baseball or scuffing one with a foreign object, and using an illegal drug to enhance your performance.

It's like comparing putting an excess of pine tar on your bat to having your opposing pitcher's hand broke prior to game time.

Hey poste, remind me never to help you again. ;)

We'll have to agree to disagree. i think the players are obviously to blame, and they should've been punished. The fact that MLB failed to take action shows them to be grossly negligent and allowed what could be considered as a hostile work environment to fester in the majors for years.

Steroids are banned from baseball and from recreational use in the United States. You would think baseball would realize the type of scandal that would break out if they allowed players to get away with steroid use, instead they closed their eyes probably due to MLB's declining popularity after the 1994 strike.

Why is this so suprising to everyone? Did everyone think players suddenly began eating wheaties in the early to mid 90's? :)

It does suck for the fans, though. All we should be hearing about is the Sox championship, Spring Training, etc. It's going to be all about steroids for a while, though.

Oh and I realize that players have personal ethics (or lack thereof) to consider when they are faced with using steroids or not, but MLB is specifically charged with maintaining the sanctity and integrity of the sport, and they failed miserably.

touche, but when had MLB failed to act when it became apparent that the ball was being altered illegally? :)

We've suspected steroids being a large part of the game over the game for almost 10 years now, and have pretty much known it to be true for the last 3 or 4 years.

hehehe :D

I'm curious as to what got this whole steroid ball rolling? What happened to finally bring it to surface?

On this site? or Baseball in general?

On this site- Steroid is a drug :D

Baseball In General- While the Balco situation had died down a little bit. It was the "leak" of Jason Giambi's testomony and Jose Canseco's book that opened the eyes of many people. Plus the fact that Barry Bonds won his 4th consectitive MVP.

Barry Bonds is the most marketable player in MLB and I believe if we didnt have a Barry Bonds we wouldnt of had a scandel. MLB would have done something about this many, many years. MLB had to protect its value.

trivia: what well known pitcher's autobiography is titled me and the spitter?

more trivia: how many games was whitey ford ejected from for doctoring the ball, which everyone knew he did? for bonus points, name the yankee that scuffed the ball for him.

easy trivia: what pitcher threw the last legal spitball?

:)

come on Astrid, you know the braves are going to choke like they do everyother year. They can win against the sorry teams they play, but when they face a real team they die in the first round of the playoffs.

hey, Atlanta is the closest team to me, but I'll still admit, they make very bad decisions and can't stick with a team for more than a year. And why in the hell is chipper jones still playing...he sucks. and andrew is getting old and fat, he used to be damn good...what happened :(

Im not a Braves fan by any means but I highly disagree with your statements about the Jones's.

Chipper while playing hurt and only playing 137 games still hit 30 Hr's and drove in 96. Definatly does not suck.

Andruw getting old and fat? LMAO!!! My god , he is only 27 (soon to be 28) , I must be ancient then. Fat? The kid weighs only 170.

Great now im old and fat....:\

Good Questions.

Gaylord Perry was the first one.

Still trying to remember the number of times, I know Elston Howard was the Yankee catcher who helped Whitey.

Burleigh Grimes was the last to throw a legal spitball .

you do have to wonder about a team that's won their division almost every year for the last 15 years and only managed one world series win. you'd think the odds would be more in their favor.

I can see your point.

They say pitching wins championships and I highly disagree. I believe its the combination of pitching, timely hitting, great defense and good baserunning.

Cant complain about the Braves pitching staff but the bats always seem to go cold in october.

right right right. i am pretty sure that whitey was never ejected. elston howard used the buckles on his shinguards to mark the ball up.

:)

Whitey was a Yankee playing in the 60's I couldnt imagine him getting ejected. 8(

Game called after swarm of bees invade field

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - The Things were buzzing at Tucson Electric Park on Thursday, and that was not a good thing.

Swarms of bees invaded the field and forced a game between the Colorado Rockies and Arizona Diamondbacks to be called after five innings.

Arizona Diamondbacks shortstop Sergio Santos dodges a swarm of bees during a game with the Colorado Rockies in Tucson Thursday. (Ed Andrieski / AP)

"I guess we've got to call that a `Bee' game," Arizona manager Bob Melvin said.

The bees literally chased Rockies pitcher Darren Oliver from the mound. He kept trying to go back, but the bees would go after him again. Finally, after a 20-minute delay, he left for good and let reliever Allan Simpson complete the inning.

"I love this game," Oliver said, "but I like myself a little bit more."

Oliver said the bees apparently were attracted to the coconut oil in his hair gel.

"I guess I must have smelled good. It was kind of funny at first, but after a while I started getting a little nervous and scared out there," he said.

The Diamondbacks took the field in the sixth, but by then the bees had spread over the entire field. Shortstop Sergio Santos, who had just entered the game, was chased all the way into deep center field.

"There were like little packs moving around," said Arizona's Luis Gonzalez, who hit his first homer of the spring in the first inning and was on third after a triple when the bee-delay occurred. "They were all over the pitcher, and Santos when he went out. I think it was either their cologne or deodorant or something. They've got to switch it up."

There was a brief bee delay at the same ballpark two years ago.

But Joe Garagiola Sr., attending the game with his son, Diamondbacks general manager Joe Garagiola Jr., said he had never seen anything like Thursday's invasion.

"And I go back to 1942," the elder Garagiola said.

Garagiola Jr. briefly conferred with home plate umpire Larry Poncino, then the game was called.

"It got to be a safety issue," Garagiola Jr. said. "The bees were all over the field. They were on the mound, they were in the outfield, they were out at shortstop, and we just couldn't continue play."

There were no reports of players or anyone in the crowd of 8,029 being stung.

There have been increasing reports of emergency calls involving swarming bees in the Phoenix and Tucson areas in recent weeks.

"It seemed like wherever anybody went, a swarm of them popped up," Colorado catcher J.D. Closser said. "They've had some rough times down here the last couple of weeks with some bee attacks, so I don't that's a thing you want to mess with too much."

Arizona center fielder Jose Cruz Jr. first noticed the bees and was chased from his position during a pitch. The bees then moved to the first base area in the next half-inning, where the Rockies' Todd Helton swatted them away. Then they zeroed in on Oliver.
