When launching their careers, many job seekers had a simple method of choosing the best job for them: They guessed. A job might "feel right" or "sound cool" or be considered successful according to the media, conventional wisdom or the advice of others. However, as many realtors and autoworkers will tell you, conventional wisdom can change. And with fierce competition for jobs making it tougher than ever to get a "do-over" if you make the wrong choice, guessing is not a smart approach to career management.

So if the lesson of the past year is that you need to determine the best career path for you the first time around, how exactly can you do that? For starters, having a few facts will help. CareerCast.com's 2010 Jobs Rated report offers a comprehensive analysis of 200 different jobs – from Accountant to Zoologist – giving each a unique ranking based on factual analysis and hard data, not guesswork. If you're entering (or re-entering) the job market and want to avoid selecting the wrong career, our rankings can help you make a stronger, more informed decision, both for today and the long-term.

Might interest some.

LOL, wat a bullshit list. They have Welder as #196--thats a great job! You get paid so fucking well, you get in a union and you are set for life, and theres lots of work for welders, IDK where yall live at but here they always got work.

And mail carrier is #191--you mean to tell me the job that both my parents worked for 30 years to support 3 kids on is the 9th worst job in the country out of all the 'standard' careers? Gimme a fuckin break!

And they have a "PHILOSOPHER" in the TOP TEN?? WTF are these people smoking? That aint even a real fucking job!?

This list looks to me like the boujie-ass ideas of some snooty fucking office people, becuz alot of those jobs they put on the bottom are great, good paying, hard working jobs that regular people would LOVE to be able to have, i guess these uppity upper crust white collar people writing this shit look down too much on a job that involves physical labor. Fuck them.

Their ratings for welder made it look like it had poor pay, poor hiring outlook, and an unhealthy work environment. I don't think it's uppity upper crust white collar people making guesswork of the value of these jobs since it does say it's based on an analysis of factual data and not guesswork (I assume surveys of the workers themselves/national employment figures/health inspector reports, etc.), then goes onto say people's disposition will play a huge role in how they judge whether they would like any of these jobs. This is just a ranking based on commonly considered factors that there is some way to quantify and add up. That said, I would love to be a philosopher. The fact that it isn't a "real" job is the most attractive thing about it!

I don't agree with this list at all, sorry. I doubt that it's accurate whatsoever.

+1 Lacey. The list is total bullshit.

About the people who deliver mail; they are always the nicest people I encounter. I doubt that their job is that bad if they consistently happy when I see them.

The funniest to me is #1 - Actuary. That's like the shittiest job ever. First of all, you're crunching numbers ALL day. Second, you're crunching numbers about probabilities of terrible things involving peoples lives. Talk about super fucking creepy and depressing.

Not all actuaries deal with life insurance. For example, some actuaries calculate investment risks.

Welders are always in demand out here on the east coast, and the unions control everything. Its one of the best jobs you can train for if you do vocational school. A unionized AWS certified welder in their first year will usually make around or over $20 per hour. Overtime you get time and a half. and it just goes up from there. I knew a kid who had been doin it like, 3, 4 years and he was making $35 an hour. My welding teacher when he did jobs (He was in his 50's and still worked part time when he wasnt teaching) made $55 an hour, and got double time and a half for holidays and weekends. The money is insane. I dont know WTF these people consider good money if they dont think that is good pay. Regardless of the other shit they want to calculate with their little bullshit statistics, low pay is definitely NOT one of the problems with that job.

Welders make good money right out of vocational school, and I'm working as one for a second job right now and making way more at that than as an intern Architect, yet reverse it 20 years and a welder would be doing well making $50+/hr while as a licensed Architect I can expect upward of $150/hr even at a shitty firm, and much, much more at a good one.

That list is indeed total bullshit, though.

I found it funny that Architectural Drafter was listed above Architect, etc...

I know a welder who has a real hard time finding work within 150 miles of where he lives and there's alot of construction going on. But the jobs are hard to get unless you're part of a big established construction company. I think it depends on alot of things. IT techs are supposed to be in demand, but I know quite a few having a hard time finding a good job.

Maybe they should have skipped the whole list idea as the centerpiece for this research. What exactly about being a paralegal is any sort of good? I'm sure that somewhere, in one of those proverbial "major firms" that no one you know works at, they get paid enough to live a semblance of a life. But in reality, they work ridiculous hours for barely more than minimum wage for outrageous shitheads in what is a total money-driven environment. Gee, doesn't sound suicidally frustrating at all.

And Actuary at number 1? That job does pay a lot of money considering the humble bachelor's degree it requires from anyschool, usa, but there's a reason for that: it fucking sucks. Big time. There's no other way to put it.

Why the 200 list? All that research, and they would have been more on point if they just summed it up with a full page ad for a psychiatrist, a low interest credit card, and a sentence that says "get the fuck out while you still have the capacity to feel!"

I think the list is informative because I was not even aware of the existence or the description of many of these jobs, but the fact that they are ranked like that should just be ignored as it's really a total toss up depending on how you think, learn, what kind of physical shape you are in, and so many other factors. They have a lawyer as #80. I thought that would be much higher up. All the different types of doctor are pretty low on the list too. They have janitor rated higher than Dentist, Actor, Nurse, and a lot of other "good" jobs.
I think it's pretty amazing that Philosopher is as high as it is, but then again if you do land a philosopher position you should KEEP IT.
My uncle is a philosopher for University of Cincinnati and he lives a GREAT life style. The guy can basically set his own hours, he goes on these "mandatory" sabbaticals to Greece and Italy for months on end where he can just lounge around and meet and greet some of the sharpest minds in his field in some of the finest hotels in the world.
Being a professor is a good life. He's got a huge house and brilliant children.
Being a welder is a good life too though. I know a guy who gets $30+/hr to work 4 days a week welding.
I had a highschool friend who became a trucker and gets about $30/hr too.

Man, this list is so dumb. If not even for the choices they made, but for one major reason: not all jobs are good for all people. Some guy might be able to be a neurosugeon, but could conceivably find more pleasure in being an accountant, or a horse jockey. Every one is different... the thing isn't to find the 'best job' but to find the job that is best for you.

hey this list is utter bollocks...how the hell can dental hgy...and pharmacist...be more important actual doctor or real dentist..this is dog shit.....and iam pipefitter/welder...and i can get decent cash all/most the time..196/welder ..who the hell wrote this crap....

Still..., Thankoyu for posting Arnold, i supose i did find this entertaining to some degree..

Exactally right Jert, thats why this type of stuff is, and never will be accurate..
Its funny how we are still all drawn to reading such non-sense even tho theres still no possiable way for any if it to be true.. (Even tho some are so gullable that they'ed still believe it!!)

No need to be sorry, I agree with you.

Thanks Captin, :) ive got this thing with saying ''sorry'', i never want to offend anyone.. :\

I dunno, a friend of mine's mom work for the post office and she says her job is shit. Under paid for the work they do and get easily shafted if they get off schedule (I forgot specifically the rules or reasons, but she mention that they can potentially work on their own time because they were late to picks or drop offs). In her situation I believe she would have to drive 4 hours total there (a major city in my state) and back if she ended up getting off time.

just a random anecdote. How much this carriers over to other cities, counties, and states, I dunno.

Obviously these rankings are mostly anecdotal and depend on what area of the country a person is in, and what skills they have.

It was interesting though, according to this list I picked a good field to go into. I'm a junior working on my bachelor's in social work right now. Social work was #52 and was projected to grow 23% by 2016.

I work for one of those firms. All our paralegals got fired in 2008/9 due to the recession. Now the trainees, librarians and PSLs do their work. So no: paralegal is not in the top 10 desirable jobs, because there are no fucking paralegal jobs. Same problem with many of the others - mathematician, philosopher, maybe biologist, certainly historian: most of the jobs will be academic, and good luck getting them.

Same with my job, librarian: no 46, but (especially in the USA) there are zero job opportunities in this field.

(by the way, re: welder - it's not saying that it's a bad job: it still made the top 200 list, which isn't bad...)
