Hello everyone.

About 2-3 years ago, I was prescribed K'pin 0.5mg PO q 24h for anxiety and panic attacks. It didn't do much. After discussing the lack of results, my MD went up on the script to 1.0mg q 6h, which helped but still didn't do much for the rare instances I was still having a true panic attack (panic attacks did drop from 1 or 2 per week down to one every other month while one the 1.0mg q 6h schedule). I asked the MD about Xanax, and was told "blah blah never, blah blah addiction, blah blah never," (I'm paraphrasing). Time to switch doctors! So, I found a new MD who was much more Xanax-friendly. She agreed to write for Xanax if I would try to take the K'pin down to 1.0mg q 24h, and use 1.0mg Xanax as-needed for strong panic attacks.

Not bad, right? Sounds good? Well I thought it sounded like a good plan, so I agreed.

After about 2 weeks, I did have a huge panic attack. Upon recognizing the on-set, I took 1.0mg Xanax and set the stopwatch on my phone. After 5 minutes, I couldn't feel the Xanax kicking in and I was entering my typical panic attack symptoms (arteries throbbing, dizzy, can't understand voices, feel like I'm dying). After 20 minutes, I was beginning to come out of the panic attack which is the usual time-frame my body runs without any medication.

I decided to experiment a little. Yesterday evening, my anxiety level was zero. I took a Xanax, and set my stopwatch. 5 minutes: nothing. 20 minutes: nothing. Should I ask my MD about increasing my dosage?

It kicks in faster taking sublingual, but probably longer than five minutes. If it didn't ease your panic attack symptoms, it may not be the right drug for you. If you're thinking a higher dose is needed, that's up to your doctor. Frankly, it alarms me a bit that you dropped your first doctor that wouldn't prescribe it and found one that did and now you're not happy with the results you're getting from it. What exactly were you expecting from your experiment yesterday?

i have my doc switch my benzo scrip once per month. Valium does absolutely NOTHING for me (even in doses at upwards of 50mg (!!!), i mainly switch between four .5mg xanax per day for a month, then back to two 1mg klonopins per day for a month. i think next time, i am going to see if he can just keep me on 2mg/daily klonopin and give me maybe 10-15 xanax 1mg per month for acute panic. xanax works best at ending panic attacks for me but klonopin helps keep the anxiety at bay in the first place. if i start nearing panic while on klonopin, though, it takes about 3mg and half an hour to 45 minutes for my symptoms to be alleviated.

Yes, I agree with the Klonopin. I was hoping for your Xanax results, but 1mg didn't do it for me.

I agree to this, as well. Klonopin just doesn't work quickly enough to be suitable for panic attacks.

for lots of people benzos dont cause a noticeable relaxation/buzz/whatever. i know they don't do anything noticeable for me.
it should stop a panic attack though, if the xanax dose you're taking doesn't ease a panic attack, you probably want to up it... but i wouldn't expect any recreational value from it...

take 2-3mg and see how you feel. if you take more you'll probably black out

If the xanex doesn't work for you, all it will accomplish with raising the dose is to raise your tolerance. I'd try 1mg next time it happens and if that doesn't work she may give you ativan or something.
