Millions of U.S. children are living with mental health disorders, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The CDC looked at the rates of various mental health conditions among American children for its first comprehensive report on the state of mental health among children aged between 3 and 17.
About one in five children of these ages have a mental health disorder, according to the CDC, and the numbers seem to be going up as does the cost of health care associated with the conditions.

'Millions of children in the U.S. have mental disorders that affect their overall health and present challenges for their loved ones. In addition, the financial costs of childhood mental disorders are at least an estimated $247 billion each year,' Dr. Tom Frieden, director of the CDC, said in a news release.
'We are working to both increase our understanding of these disorders, and help scale up programs and strategies to promote children's mental health so that our children grow to lead productive, healthy lives.'

Childhood mental health disorders include attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorders, behavior disorders, mood and anxiety disorders, substance use disorders and Tourette Syndrome.
CDC researchers worked alongside other federal health agencies in order to come up with the number of children diagnosed with mental health disorders between 2005 and 2011.

They found ADHD was the most prevalent disorder affecting nearly 7 percent of U.S. children between the ages of 3 and 17.
Behavioral or conduct problems followed affecting 3.5 percent of children, then anxiety (3 percent), depression (2 percent), autism (1 percent) and Tourette's (0.2 percent for 6 to 17-year-olds).
The CDC in March reported one in 50 U.S. school children have some form of autism. This is significantly higher than the one in 88 estimate put forward by the government last year,
Older adolescents, from ages 12 to 17, were tracked for substance abuse disorders.

The report showed nearly 5 percent of them used an illicit drug within the past year, more than 4 percent said they used alcohol, and almost 3 percent admitted cigarette dependence within the past month.
The CDC hopes to better understand the impact of these mental health disorders to inform needs for treatment and intervention strategies.
Children with the disorders are also more likely to have chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes, and epilepsy than children without mental health problems.
The disorders can also last into adulthood, increasing risk for decreased productivity, substance use and injury, and substantial costs both to the individual and the U.S. economy.
The CDC also pointed out that suicide, the second-leading cause of death among adolescents between 12 and 17, can result from the interaction of mental health disorders and other factors.

MENTAL! :D

The tests they do over there are insane. I did an alcohol attitude test in the US, answered honestly on every question, turned out I was an alcoholic in need of therapy, which is bullshit obviously, for those tests if you say you need a beer to feel relaxed at night and look forward to your first drink of the day you're a hopeless alcoholic. Same thing for ADD tests and many others.

Not shocking... swear its like 1 in 4 for the general population too.. or something like that. Anyways all I have to say is of course ADHd is one of the highest because doctors like to over prescribe kids and misdiagnosed... I am certain I have adhd. I was the kid daydreaming in class about crashing out the window with a jetpack and fighting a spy... my mind always going ect... however not once did I ever get help for it... and I'm doing fine. I rather not be a fucking zombie. Even though a heroin addiction deff made me one anyways. So whatevs.

I am hoping to become a psychologist, but I doubt I can handle putting so many kids on drugs... well referring them to a psychiatrist who will. Meds are our go to answer and they don't need to be.. Also there is a ton of research out there that shows how medications can do more harm than good. Not shocking since the pharmaceutical companies sell their medications to our doctors like they would a car.. and they really don't have any knowledge on these drugs.

I'm not total anti medications but all the ones I've been on only made me worse. Shit one weekend of doing mdma/acid made me feel better about myself and my life than any ssri did... it also helped me figure out shit too.

I'm not recommending drugs for teens with mental health disorders, but lets see what's making them the way they're... or find out what can make their life better. So many kids have disorders, and nobody has the time to stop and help them anymore.

Surely if you had ADHD you'd be incapable of having 'dreams' because your mind's essentially a scrambled mess?

I might be wrong, but I thought having ADHD was like having someone press play on multiple cds and movies all at the same time whilst you try to focus on just one film or CD.

And peeps with it need amphetamines to be able to quieten down that other stuff going on in their brains?

You can dream... I mean that was just a little bit of a sneak peek.. but my brain is going all time. I also feel tired after having caffeine ect (so that could also be a sign). I've been up for a day now and I'm not even high. I've gone multiple days as well. That could be insomnia.. but my brain also won't stfu. I have learned to live and deal with it. I also had a mom who wouldn't even have been willing to put me on those type of meds.

I know its good to have an amphetamine script but all these young kids shouldn't be put on it right away... and a lot of kids are sadly. A lot of them who get put on stimulants also don't even have adhd. I'm just saying we need to work with young kids before saying fuck it lets just give them meds.

You can teach kids with adhd little things to channel their energy into... even if your sitting at a desk you can do this certain type of foot roll that will lessen down your need to be all wonky.. it sounds weird or stupid but it works... and no one will even know you're doing it. Theres all sorts of behavior modifications. And lets not forget there is a thing called play.... when will parents take their kids to the park?! Geez.

Yeah, it's criminal the way they freely prescribe so many young children with amphetamines.

Even here in the U.K it's becoming commonplace.
The sad part is when they hit 18 they get taken off their meds. As if ADHD just disappears with maturity. :|

But that's another story for another thread...

i fucking love how ADD can apply to anyone. Dr tells me to keep upping my dose until i have a panic attack basically, so i get a shit load of d-amp! It's a corrupt bullshit thing, i do have ADD anyway but anyone could get the same medication if they look at the DSM. Then after a while maybe i can get benzos to take the edge off and z-drugs to help me sleep. It's like a drug addicts dream the way big pharma has set this shit up. Still i stick to therapeutic doses because it does actually help so much. And shit the muscle spasms in my neck are getting a bit bad from all the stimulation, may need something to counter that too.

having ADD is like your brain can't process all the stimuli at once and filter out what's important or not. So yeah you can have 6 cd players and two tvs going but that's just to distract your brain/mind so that it can focus on one thing, not a really good treatment though. With higher dopamine levels your brain will naturally filter out what's important or not.

Caffeine making you sleepy is definitely a big sign that you'd experience a paradoxical reaction with stims, which is used to treat ADD/ADHD. My psych uses his hands to demonstrate what's going on, for a regular person, if you interlock your fingers together, then and close your hands together, not much can be let out but for someone with ADD/ADHD, move your two hands apart and now there are spaces between the fingers, and things don't get filtered out. Pretty advanced discussion i know.

1 in 5 is believable but that's just because the DSM keeps expanding to include everyone so we can all be drugged up for big pharma! I say fuck it though, if that's what they want, then i'll tweak till the end with them. The only shit that bothers me is SSRI, SNRI, DRNI pushing and antipsychotic pushing (namely b/c of side effects and lack of recreational effects). If big pharma replaces those shit anti-depressants with d-amp or methamphetamine or even opioids, then ill lobby for them myself. Then again this may be the d-amp talking, embrace this brave new world!
