whats the difference between this and 1-benzylpiperazine hcl

Is the 2hcl one ok to ingest?

Yes, you'll just need more of the drug to acheive the same effect. There is extra "weight" taken up by the extra hydrochloride.

BZP Freebase = 176.26 g/mol-1
HCl=36.46 g/mol-1
BZP*HCl = 212.72 g/mol-1
BZP *2HCl = 249.18 g/mol-1

So, you'll need 1.1714 times more BZP dihydrochloride than monohydrochloride.

:)

Does benzylpiperazine freebase form a 2HCl salt naturally? Is most benzylpiperazine HCl possibly 2HCl? Is equimolar HCl added to BZP freebase to form the 1HCl salt?

It will just depend on the pH of the solution it is evaporated from...

If the chemist adds 1 equivalent of HCl,you get the mono HCl salt.If he adds two,you'll get the di-HCl salt.More than two eq's still produces the dihydrochloride but if his skills are lousy and adds 1.2764eq HCl oh well you'll have a mixture.

So making the 2HCl salt is on the safe side for having a homogen and well defined product,though dihydrochlorides are often very hygroscopic and difficult to handle.

Plus,it happens that the monohydrochlorides are crystallising faster/easier and form more stable polymorphs,meaning they are targeted in the first place.
