.001 scales/balances

If you want good quality ones I would consider paying for accurate jeweller's (gemstone) scales. These will cost you an arm and a leg (up to 10 times the price) compared to those you may get online from SE Asia though. If you were say weighing something like phenazepam though, I'd splash out on the more expensive ones.

Sorry rm2x, can't allow that link as 99% of the products on there have no harm reduction value, sure you understand mate :)

I recently went looking for some accuarate 1mg scales. belarki is right in pointing you towards gemstone scales. Forget buying them anywhere in Australia - you'll pay double what you would to have them sent accross the big blue sea from the United States.

Stick to the more expensive brands too. They are priced a hell of a lot higher for a reason. It's almost criminal to rate the cheap dodgy scales as 0.001 graduation. Look for brands with long warranties (some brands have lifetime warranties) - it generally means they have confidence in their product.

Also, beware of cheap knock off's on popular auction sites - they are rife.

There on the well know bidding site and all over the internet. They are used for measuring diamonds and other light weighted things. Like mentioned above dont pay more when its cheaper from overseas.

Thing is though that the cheap asian knockoffs so to speak are generally the same, unbranded/unbadged, seen dx ones next to american weigh ones, identical, same factory markings too lol just no brand
worked the same as well

Tbh if you dont get the ones without a weight so u can check its accuracy a few knocks and it will be outta wack. They are quite sensitive, and they imo are pointless. even breath can affect its accuracy. In the lab those scales are enclosed and you put ur sample in n shut the door bc a slight breeze will change it at a .00x scale

Be mindful that knocks in shipping can alter its effectiveness

My mate got a really nice one that even came with a mini bowl to measure

^ any decent set of scales will come with calibration weights. I'd recommend using these regularly regardless of whether you're using the scales all the time or not :)

Although they weren't exactly the same as the one's above, I've gotta add. I picked up my first set of scales from dx which only lasted a me few months before they started going all outta whack until I finally threw them out. After that I ended up dishing out a fair bit more for a new set which I gotta say I'm much much happier with and should have bought from the start..

Just a quick line about balance accuracy - how are you guys measuring the accuracy and precision of your balances? Just because you get a nice looking figure it does not mean that the balance is reading properly. Knocks when being moved, being placed on uneven/unstable surfaces and air movement all affect the performance of your balance. It's a little over the top but on this page from the NATA website (National Association of Testing Authorities) is Technical Note 13 - User Checks and Maintenance of Laboratory Balances http://www.nata.asn.au/publications/category/9-nata-technical-notes gives some good pointers about determining the limit of performance for scales.

U just use the calibration weight, if the scale shows the weight displayed on the calibration weight I think ur good to go:) Its always wise to do this very often like u said the scales can go out of whack by being knocked or moved.

I use these in chemistry, and they are EXTREMELY expensive, I remember my high school had a guy who came around to reset the balances, because if you move it, the .001 will get thrown off.

They're so sensitive, dust registers, the same as breathing and people moving.

Honestly, the cost is really great, and it's useless unless you know how to keep it balanced/maintained to the right setting.
