Has anyone here that lives in the UK seen the new ad for anti-cannabis use?
It apparently is part of a new campaign from Talk to Frank to stop kids trying cannabis which has costed £2.2m!

The Direct.Gov.Uk website said this about the advert:

"The campaign shows that cannabis can quickly flip from being a talkative and relaxed experience to turning nasty and users becoming paranoid, having panic attacks and being sick.

The false perception still exists amongst some young people that cannabis is a safe drug despite the fact that it can produce both immediate and longer-term harms to mental and physical health.

Public Health Minister Dawn Primarolo said: "Cannabis is a destructive drug. What can start as a few giggles and being part of the crowd can have serious and long-term health problems.

"Young people need to know cannabis isn't a soft drug. They need to be aware of the risks they're taking and know there is support for them to get the full facts through FRANK."
Cannabis is...

...the most frequently used illegal drug by 11-15 year olds.

...used by almost 18 % of 16-24 year olds.

...more than 7 % of 16-59 year olds also use cannabis.

Skunk
Stronger cannabis - 'skunk' - now dominates the cannabis market, making up 80 per cent of the cannabis available on our streets compared to 30 per cent in 2002.

In the short term, cannabis use can lead to panic attacks and paranoia. In some, its regular use may lead to later development of psychotic disorder such as schizophrenia. For people with schizophrenia it can worsen the symptoms and lead to relapse. Cannabis use can also damage people's lungs and affect their reproductive system. There is concern that the recent shift to use of stronger forms such as skunk will increase these problems."

Fair enough warning people, but spending £2.2m on it; isn't that a bit extreme? Especially when all the advert shows is lots of images of just one guy in a flat having different mood swings...
Anyway, I just wanted to know what you all thought of it...

wonder what the images looked like from the alcoholic that beats his wife and kids.... or the one about the driver running a red light killing an entire family, while the driver is still alive.
Schizophrenia? I mean really? This is what they say? im so sick of the anti-pot and the propaganda that is used.
Thanks for the post, its an interesting topic to investigate.

Yeah, or the images of the patient on Prozac murdering his family, or the one on Ambien sleepwalking naked on the freeway, or the child addicted to Ritalin who has lost all self-esteem because she believes that the drugs are the source of her good grades...
...or the one on antibiotics destroying the natural flora of her digestive system;)

It is the individual's choice what to put in his/her body!
Why will you let me take Prozac, Ritalin, or Ambien but not marijuana?!?
George Orwell is probably enjoying this.

Sorry, but this always annoys me. What has George Orwell got to do with it? Have you actually read 1984? It's nothing like what we in the UK live with. I'm all for drug policy reform, but christ.

It is highly amusing how these anti marijuana idiots constantly cite the fact it is the most commonly used illegal drug, I wonder if they would prefer to swap the weed percentages with those of heroin or cocaine?
The MAIN REASON it is most commonly used illegal drug is the common perception that it is the least damaging illicit drug (correct imho and ime) so how does that statistic justify further scrutiny against it?
The "false perception still exists" amongst the majority of society that alcohol is a safe drug, devoid of social, physical and mental problems unless consumed to total excess. What bollocks!

Where do they get this "being sick" thing from?
I've puked.. once, from smoking too much and mixing it with booze.
It's an anti-emetic for crying out loud :|

Anyhoo, money money money. Financial crisis? You wouldn't think it when they can splash this amount of cash on an ill-informed advert that'll do - a b s o l u t e l y - nothing to stop people from doing what they want to do.

from my experience, it's not a false claim. i've gotten sick and had panic attacks from weed a few times, especially when already shit drunk.

but i have problems with anxiety anyways, so i take it easy on the herb, 'cuz it definitely amplifies my anxiety. but that's just me, a lot of my friends wil say the opposite

No I'm the same. My anxiety shoots through the roof if I smoke these days.
I can smoke crack and have zero anxiety, but when it comes to weed I have to have the tiniest amount possible if I want to enjoy it at all :\

what a waste of money, those people are complete & utter 100% total doosch bags.

What can start as a few giggles and being part of the crowd can have serious and long-term health problems.
Yeeaaahh, you wouldnt want THC to prevent the cancer you'd otherwise get for smoking tobacco. Seriously if they prevent kids from preventing themselves from gettting cancer isnt that endangering the welfare of a minor?

What a waste of money! ANY kid thats grown up anywhere near weed knows that there is no chance of any mental physical harm in the 'immediate' time. All this does it further reinforce the idea that the government is ignorant and knows sweet fuck all, driving young people on to smoke weed even more as they see all the media stuff which conflicts with the anecdotal stuff that they have seen.

What has George Orwell got to do with it?

Yes, I have read 1984.
George Orwell wrote other books, too, believe it or not.
I have read a book of his called Animal Farm, which also relates to this situation.
Have you read any of his books ?
If so, I don't think that I should need to explain it to you.
It is clearly very relevant in this context, in which citizens are brainwashed with propaganda that teaches them that marijuana is a drug, prozac is a medicine, and alcohol is ... well, just alcohol.
Did you fail to see the connection?
It seems painfully obvious to me, but not only did you miss it, but you were annoyed?
Very odd.
I think that you just want to say bad things about people using the faceless safety of the internet.

My bad man.

I wasn't trying to be a prick, it's just *generally* whenever anybody mentions Orwell they're on about 1984. Put me in my place. Apologies.

I was annoyed though as I had just had a discussion specifically about 1984 and it's relation to (specifically) 21st Century Britain. And I have to say, we are not there yet.

i've seen the problems herb can cause, and it's ridiculous to be spending so much to CONTINUE talking at a fucking wall, which is essentially what the gov't is doing with this, when they could be distributing actual HR that would help thousands of people WHO WILL SMOKE WEED ANYWAY BECAUSE THEY'RE FED UP WITH EVERYTHING THE GOV'T SAYING BEING 1000% BOLLOCKS

Meh, im not really surprised at such stupidity because its not like things have changed since almost haft a century ago...The point of this article was to point out the ammount of money being put into a long resting issue, which will remain so until we elect a stoner or until the whole population decides pot is horrible. On that note, in my point of view, im just surprised that the government is still stupid enough to put money in such an issue, theyre just wasting money for no reason. But really, they must be up to something if theyve been pumping soo much money in defending it...(Sorry this is a shitty post my class just ended so i quicktimed it...will review later)

Isn't the UK on the verge of going bankrupt? Where did they get that money from. It's good to see they have their financial priorities straight...8)

Alcohol can cause many health problems also, probably even more than weed and u still see a liquor store on every corner. It's all about money anyways, not protecting the youth.

Same here.
If I had to smoke a joint and go out in public I'd be ruined.

that's because your smoking that mexi-schwag that's on the street. weed should have you high for an hour. all that weird paranoid shit you feel is all the pestisides and fertilizer that's not properly flushed out of it. smoke some good homegrown and you will notice a big difference. and i'll put money on that. ;)
