'£10 licence to smoke' proposed

making it 10$ or whatever more expensive is not gonna stop smokers from smoking. Nicotine patches, gums, and other treatments/detox will help. Besides if people wanna smoke let them. I thought we were free to do whatever made us happy. Now the government is pushing us to do one thing and stop another?

I'm sorry friend, but you thought wrong. Free to do what makes us happy? I like smoking pot all day and walking to the post office in my birthday suit... A sad reminder of our cultural deficit. Good point you've made though, of course.

Add a pound or so. Any brand thats not just awful is 4.50 or even 5 quid for 20. That's $10 a pack :) I can believe that people are thinking, my god, I'm spending 35-40 quid a week on this!
bE GLAD YOU'RE NOT

“He added: "70% of smokers actually want to stop smoking.
"So if you just make it that little bit more difficult for them to actually re-start or even to start in the first place, yes I think it will make a big difference."

Oh how nice they are actually doing this to help smokers the government is always so helpful.

nono, out of the cost of a pack of 20,
about £3.50 is tax.

Governments all aspire to this shit, they probably have collective wet dreams about achieving the level of control that soviet Russia had.

Thats why people need to realize government is a needed evil that must always be kept humble and fearful of the true masters. When things get reversed you get bullshit like this.

From BBC news:

Smoking is good news for the Treasury, with about £4.10 of the £5.50 cost of a packet of cigarettes taken in taxes.

Excluding VAT, this earned the Treasury more than £8bn in 2004-5, Ash says.

Treating diseases caused by smoking is costly, however. The campaign group says the NHS spends £1.5bn a year, including hospital admissions, GP consultations and prescriptions. There are further costs in the form of benefits.

That's a lot of money for them to lose if everyone does quit smoking. And the expenses on health care will take years to start coming down. I wonder why they want to do it, like qubert i don't think it's because they care!

Oh, didn't see the reply above. Yeah control is worth spending money on i guess, you think they need more control though? I guess a better question would be do they think they need more control, probably yeah!
