Fasting Megathread

Yeah, I didn't last long enough to have a good movement, and wasn't about to give myself an enema at work :)

Thanks for the tips though! It sounds like my result was actually a bit atypical, which is interesting.

Intermittant Fasting has many health benefits. Try reading the book Eat Stop Eat or check out Martin Berkhams site leangains.com for the best fasting method to combine with bodybuilding.

I myself fast 16 hours everyday and feel great.. Its better for bloodsugar, growth hormone, insulin resistance and much more.. I feel more energetic, my sleep patterns are better and i wake up more refreshed. The first week sucks but after that i promise you will love it. Just be sure to eat enough veggies, fruits and lean meats and fish during your 8 hour eating window. Fasting done right can benefit everyone. Its even proven to help with type 2 diabetes..

Stay healthy

Yup, me too. I also don't eat grains so it's very easy to go for long periods without eating, since my body mainly uses fat (which I eat a lot of) for energy instead of carbs. A 24 hour fast is a breeze.

Doing the 16 hour thing is also cool, besides the health benefits, because it gives me a lot of time in the morning to get stuff done instead of worrying about eating.

In a few weeks I am going to do a week-long juice fast and colon cleanse with the 'Blessed Herbs' cleanse kit. I guess it is not exactly a fast as you take a psyllium/bentonite shake 5 times a day to help clean out your digestive system. Although you don't digest anything (it's just fiber), it does help to give you that 'full' feeling. I am actually really looking forward to it. I have been doing a lot of cleansing to deal with various health problems, but no fasts so far more than two days when I do liver flushes. I tend to feel really good when I haven't eaten for a while.. everything just feels cleaner, like energy flows through me unobstructed. I think giving my body a chance to work without using energy on digestion for a little bit will do me a lot of good, and I plan on doing a lot of mediation and creative work during the process :)

Jup. That clean feeling is great. Just a healthy type of energy. I read fasting also increases adrenaline and dopamine wich would explain the rush you feel :)

I was looking at giving this method a shot : http://www.leangains.com/

Fasting and feeding

My general position on the fasted phase is that it should last through the night and during the morning hours. Ideally the fast should then be broken at noon or shortly thereafter if you arise at 6-7 AM like most people. Afternoons and evenings are usually spent in the fed state.

However, the fast could also also be broken later in the day depending on your personal preferences and daily routine. I personally tend to break the fast as late as 4-6 PM since I work well into the night and rise later than most people with normal jobs.

The recommendation for fasting through the earlier part of the day, as opposed to the latter part of the day, is for behavioral and social reasons. Most people simply find it easier to fast after awakening and prefer going to bed satiated. Afternoons and evenings are times to unwind and eat. For adherence reasons during dieting, I've also found that placing the feeding phase later in the day is ideal for most people

Structured meal time examples:

The protocols

I work with four different protocols depending on when my clients train. Depending on setup, one, two, or three meals are eaten in the post-workout period.

Fasted training

Training is initiated on an empty stomach and after ingestion of 10 g BCAA or similar amino acid mixture. This "pre-workout" meal is not counted towards the feeding phase. Technically, training is not completely fasted - that would be detrimental. The pre-workout protein intake, with its stimulatory effect on protein synthesis and metabolism, is a crucial compromise to optimize results. The 8-hour feeding phase starts with the post-workout meal.

Sample setup

11.30-12 AM or 5-15 minutes pre-workout: 10 g BCAA
12-1 PM: Training
1 PM: Post-workout meal (largest meal of the day).
4 PM: Second meal.
9 PM: Last meal before the fast.

Calories and carbs are tapered down throughout the day in the example above.

Early morning fasted training

Here's a sample setup for a client that trains early in the morning and prefers the feeding phase at noon or later. Read this for details regarding this protocol.

6 AM: 5-15 minutes pre-workout: 10 g BCAA.
6-7 AM: Training.
8 AM: 10 g BCAA.
10 AM: 10 g BCAA
12-1 PM: The "real" post-workout meal (largest meal of the day). Start of the 8 hour feeding-window.
8-9 PM: Last meal before the fast.

For the sake of conveniency, I recommend getting BCAA in the form of powder and not tabs. Simply mix 30 g of BCAA powder in a shake and drink one third of it every other hour starting 5-15 minutes pre-workout. Tabs are cheaper, but much more of a hassle (you're going to have to pop a lot of tabs). Check my supplements guide for specific brand recommendations.

One pre-workout meal

This is the most common setup for my younger clients that are still in college or have flexible working hours.

Sample setup

12-1 PM or around lunch/noon: Pre-workout meal. Approximately 20-25% of daily total calorie intake.
3-4 PM: Training should happen a few hours after the pre-workout meal.
4-5 PM: Post-workout meal (largest meal).
8-9 PM: Last meal before the fast.

Two pre-workout meals

This is the usual protocol for people with normal working hours.

Sample setup

12-1 PM or around lunch/noon: Meal one. Approximately 20-25% of daily total calorie intake.
4-5 PM: Pre-workout meal. Roughly equal to the first meal.
8-9 PM: Post-workout meal (largest meal).

Interesting. I'll have to read through the source link-- it sounds promising.

Ive been doing leangains for the past 2 weeks. Like it alot. I have my first refeed next tuesday :) Problem is i should only load up on carbs and not fats and after my fasted workout ill be going to an all you can eat chinese buffet.. But if i keep it to one meal in the whole day it shouldnt be a problem.. Ill just pig out for 3 hours and eat some cottage cheese and berries when i get home..

i dont smoke cigarrettes, but seeing how some of my female friends who have had issues with eating disorders have used them, i would imagine it would help your fast go smoother. i think something like what you are doing is an excellent way to positively affect your situation. i helped improve my deepest depression as a teen by going vegan for about 5 months. just make sure youve got plenty of fluids and vitamins/ supplements to keep your body as healthy as possible, especially considering both of us are drug users, that tends to put our bodies in an already compromised state. best of luck :)

thanks GIT :) , i just went through withdrawl from opiates, and now i would like to fast to try and get a better understanding of everything, and to appreciate what ive got. Hopefully everything works out, and thanks for the advice :D

for anyone that may read this who have the same question i did...it is NOT safe to smoke and fast..not at all.

Dangers

Chemicals found in cigarettes are more harmful to your body during periods of fasting because your body starts to turn to these chemicals for nutrients. Compiled of nicotine, carbon monoxide and radioactive nuclides, cigarette smoking increases the risk of nausea, dizziness and vomiting as these components quickly damage your central nervous system. After a week of fasting and smoking, your body is more susceptible to the effects of carbon monoxide as your body is now using stored fat and nutrients, increasing your risk of heart attack or stroke according to Myfasting.com.

Fasting is amazing. I have done around 8 fasts in my life, and all have changed my perspective and made me stronger.
I wrote about my experiences here on Erowid.
You have already learned that smoking is not safe while fasting, which is good.
Since fasting removes many poisons from your body, it seems silly to keep taking in more poisons while fasting anyway, doesn't it?
How long are you planning to fast for?
Good luck!

In 2005 I was doing fasting 2x/month. It worked really well at the time.

I committed to do fasting again this year. So I tried it today -- it's Ekadashi -- a beneficial day for fasting (based on the lunar cycle).

I had to break my fast at 4 PM due to extreme headache :( It was going really well-- no desire to eat or drink because I was so resolved to do it.

My headache is still pretty intense. I finally took half of an ibuprofen just now and I hope it helps. I even drank 2 cups of green tea and then 1 cup of coffee to see if it was due to caffeine -- to no avail.

This was my first fast after 7 years of intermittent drug abuse. Of course I will experience a headache 8)
I need to find out how to do more cleansing in a less extreme way apparently. Any ideas?

i would juice raw fruit & veg as well, idk if you own a juicer though...

I do; I've never used it; I should.

Update. So yesterday I fasted from dinner previous night until 4PM (about 18 hours including sleep). I felt like garbage all night but today I feel AMAZING. And yes coffee is zooming through my veins (or something) so that is contributing.

I feel less bloated and generally "lighter". I will continue to try fasting in different ways and update here.

I get more energy when I fast. I rarely do it but often go 6-8 hours without eating. As long as I'm in keto-mode (more or less) I don't really experience hunger. I did fast once it twice for a day... maybe 30 something hours.

It isn't bad for you. The body repairs itself. Intestines repair themselves because they finally get a break. This leads to better digestion/absorption.

im on day 2 of juice fast, doing okay and looking healthier etc

quitting solid food is almost on par with quitting cigarettes though, going to try use it as a challenge

and i keep fantasising about steak >.>

day 4 could not come fast enuf ugh.
