Not on a train, sadly.
So my last World Music thread was lost with the purge.

So let's try this again. Any fans of international music?

My current craze is Sevdalinka - a style of Bosnian "blues" with heavy Ottoman influences. Another thing I'm getting into is Malian music. I also listen a lot to traditional Iranian music.

My interest is pretty broad but tends to be focused around Central/Western Asia (and the Indian Subcontinent) and South America.

So for those interested, how about you make a playlist of 10 songs that you recommend others check out? I'll make mine in a bit :).

I never quite understood the title of 'world' when referring to this genre.

It is a rather silly name. "International" would have made slightly more sense.

I suppose "World" is anything from countries whose artists aren't known much to the outside world. It isn't so much a genre than a category...

this thread miiiiight just die a slow death, as we have an african music thread that needs bumping, and ive been thinking of starting a latin american music thread.

of course, thats because I can completely pass on almost all other areas music-- so maybe I'm biased.

up bustle and out - hearty do-lallies
manu chao - promiscuity
thievery corporation - the richest man in babylon (track 3)
up bustle and out - silks perfumes and gold
somogo - pulsions
somogo - zen
ladysmith black mombaso - itshitshi
earnest ranglin - surfin
earnest ranglin - satta massagana
asian dub foundation - collective mode

all doing the rounds on my playlist - eargasms
:)

I don't know any bands or song names but I have a CD full of music from South America, mostly the Andes region, and its amazing. Some of the songs are in Spanish, so I can understand them, and some are in local dialects which I don't understand, but they all share great instrumentation - harps, pan flutes, types of drums that probably don't even have names, etc...
I'll have to dig up the CD and see if I can find any names, but as far as I know it doesn't contain "popular" music from the region as much as field recordings from local villagers and the like.

Great thread Jamshyd. :D

Big fan of Lisandro Aristimuño from Argentina, love his sound. I really like Balinese Gamelan music as well as Tibetan throat singing. That stuff is crazy, getting more than one harmonic out at once.

Ukrainian/Russian Reggae - 5'nizza

This probably a little too far out for most people, but maybe someone might dig this kind of stuff. These guys combine a nice reggae sensibility, with surrealistic lyrics and a DIY attitude. Check em out:

Their name is a play on the Russian word for Friday. Пятница <> 5nizza

Some of their more upbeat tracks:

5'nizza - Soldat (Soldier)
5'nizza - Jamaica
5'nizza - Vesna (Spring)

They've even done a cover of the Soviet Anthem (in reggae style):

5'nizza - Гимн CCCH

My favorite song:

5'nizza - Зима (winter)

^ This trick never fails to send me into a deep contemplative mood. Really touching.

And lyrics, they are completely far out (the translation might sound weird, but in Russian the flow is perfect):

A trail was left a plane, [in the sky]
The ice is melting under my feet,
Those who are under the ice - are not with us
Suspended cities
The water chasing the air
The centuries are following my hands
Day after tomorrow - we see snow
White man...
....with feathers - is that me?
Being lifting? [into the sky?]
Understanding?
They let me change?
In cold windows...
...the sunset is born
In other windows...
...there is no way back
Head towards the light
Changed forever [x2]
Summer is changed forever
I cover myself in a warm rug
What next? Whispering: winter
The cage* in the stairwell is leading me
My heart is going crazy in my chest
It will fall and it won't melt
Mid-altitude
Thoughts: "I am not me, not you"
The numbers miss the arrows *2
On the edge of winter
Where we are numb
The shadows let go
Melted snows [sic - snow can be plural in Russian]
[Can't translate this line]
In cold windows...
...the sunset is born
In other windows...
...there is no way back
Head towards the light
Changed forever [x2]
Summer is changed forever
I cover myself in a warm rug
What next? Whispering: winter
On the other side of the world...
From winter to the earth *3
From earth to....

* In Russian/Ukrainian apartments, you often have a cage in the middle of the stairwell that holds the elevator - something like this: http://www.interesniy.kiev.ua/imglib/SecretKiev/CNV000067.jpg
*2 Reference to Daylight savings time
*3 Zima = Winter, Zemlya = Earth - it's a play on words

Pardon the shitty translation! :) It's difficult to understand the lyrics in Russian, let alone translate them into English.

If anyone cares for more 'alternative' Russian music, feel free to PM and I'll post some other cool songs. :)

They call it World music because that is the only thing international musicians have in common.
They live on the same planet.
That's really my best guess...

I really love the sound of some good ol' steel drums...

"world" music is rather a broad term but it basically refers to traditional, instrumental, often historical, folk music from a variety of countries.
eg brazilian samba
jamaican reggae
romanian gypsy folk
irish/celtic folk
indian tabla
mongolian throat singing

all these types of music are traditional and typical for the repective countries, usually played by the common people. "world" music often doesnt fit into genres such as rock or techno, as these are modern genres played across the world, usually in the corporate music industry, "folk" is classless, and specifically accessible and historic. for the most part....

Okay, I don't know if any of these classify as "world" but I figured I'd give it a shot and try 'n contribute to this thread. Here's some picks from my collection:

Africa - I don't understand what they're saying 'cause I don't speak Nigerian(?), but when the guitar solo kicks in we're all speaking the same language, babe. <3
France - Again, no idea what they're saying but look at my face: %) I don't give a fudge! It's a mad funky jazzy soul affair.
India - Luckily I speak Hindi so I know exactly what he's saying. Okay, I don't but this track grooves so hard. On the Bollywood tip.
Jamaica -Finally, a language I understand: stoned! JAH RASTAFARI!
Wildcard - So they were born in Mexico, refined their sound for years in Ireland, and have a distinctly flamenco style which is originally from Spain. Yeah!

Chavela Vargas died today at the age of 93
RIP

If you don't know who she is:

Chavela+Vargas+ch.jpg

She was a Costa Rican-born Mexican singer. She was especially known for her rendition of Mexican rancheras, but she is also recognized for her contribution to other genres of popular Latin American music. She has been an influential interpreter in the Americas and Europe, muse to figures such as Pedro Almodóvar, hailed for her haunting performances, and called "la voz áspera de la ternura", the rough voice of tenderness.

Awesome post Maximilian

I've been listening to some of the narcocorridos lately at this is my favorite Los Cuates de Sinaloa - Ismael El Mayo
^It's the same group that did nergo y azul for Breaking Bad

I know the mexican gov have been in talks to ban the narco corridors all together and some radio stations in mexico won't play them anymore, people and actually corrido bands have been murdered down there for making songs against rival cartels and such, it's pretty fucked up

Anyone know any other popular or old corridos?
They don't have to be narcocorridos

thanks, brah. Breaking Bad really does feature great music. Last week's episode (Hazard Pay) had an awesome soul track.

and I can't hang with you on those narcocorridos, but I'll look into them some more later. Always on the lookout for something new even before I'm done listening to what I just downloaded. Currently, I'm on a serious Brazillian tip. Can't believe I didn't post any in my earlier post!

Heraldo do Monte - Forrozin (I've thought about fapping to the guitar in this song. srs. do Monte kills it.)
Gal Costa - Pontos de Luz (dem vocals. funkiest track on this list.)
O Terco - Deus (70s psych/prog rock, nuff said. for fans of King Crimson.)
Marilia Medalha - Agua Escondida (no clue what she's saying but it sounds sexy as fuck.)

I love Brasilian tunes!
