Bodies anticipation of drug?

I have a regular script for bog standard codeine I have been recieving for over ten years. It is prescribed for back pain (along with regular physiotherapy) that I have suffered since a horse riding incident in which I broke my back ten years ago .

I use the codeine generally only when needed and in the amounts prescribed. However, once every one to two months if I have some left over tablets from my prescription from months previous I will take a larger dose and enjoy the euphoria that comes with it and generally enjoy myself for a weekend.

Bit of a weird question here - but I feel like as soon as I make that decision, my body is anticipating it, despite the fact I take it in theraputic doses perhaps two or three times a week. A few hours before I know I will be taking it I feel a little fidgety and for some reason have an upset stomach and butterflies. I think it is probably normal and simply excited to get on with it. I just wondered if anyone else experienced anything simular?

Thanks :).

Absolutely. You are anticipating the euphoria. There were times when, years ago, I would go score my DOC, and driving home, just thinking about it, there were times I had to open the car door and puke on the street . It's normal. I don't think it's anything to worry about .

yea brain knows whats coming and get excited. same anticipatory activity happens with cancer patients go in for chemo they throw up on the way or before therapy.

Wow, puking? That's some serious anticipation! Or was it another reason that DOC made you puke thinking about it?
I've never puked in anticipation of a drug before, and it's hard to imagine getting such an intense gut reaction.

I used to be addicted to methamphetamines, and to this day, if I get to talking about it too much, my stomach will get the butterfly feelings you were describing, I'll get really anxious, (this is embarrassing, but.......) my anus will actually feel tingle-ly and pucker up, and it will feel like I have to take a dump.

edit: This will especially happen if someone kind of suggests about doing it again with me or if I am near it.

I'm sure i saw a TV program once where they showed an ex cocaine user in some kind of MRI type scanning device, they showed him films of people preparing and doing lines of coke and his brain was firing off in all directions they even suggested he suffered a slight come down

I usually start feeling nauseous on my way to buy opiates or while preparing them for ingestion, used to get the same thing before taking MDMA or meth, except a slightly hyped up edgy type feel.

A good friend of mine used to be a heavy coke user. 2 years clean and if we talk about coke too much around him, he'll have to go take a shit.

Yeah, I had a pretty decent H habit for a few years, and if I was dopesick and just scored, I would start thinking about it at a traffic light or something and a few times I actually vomited from thinking about it. Same thing would happen when I smelled the fumes from cooking up a shot . I don't remember ever puking from smelling the fumes, though I know it would tie my stomach up in knots.

Totally normal. Similar to pavlov's experiments. It has been suggested that the anticipation of the high is somewhere equal to usingthe drug itself ona chemical level (e.g., neurotransmitter release an uptake). They used pet scans and showed addicts and nonaddicts a picture of a forest and the same areas of the brain lit up showing they recognized it but no real stimulation noted. When shown pictures of drugs or parafanalia the nonaddicts imagesdis not change while the addicts brains lit up like Christmas trees. Not calling anyone an addict just assuming it works the same with the expectation of said enjoyable event.

Most definitely! This physiological effect can/has been quite easily been proven using tools such as fMRI machines and the like.

Speak to, well, any addict. But I've found even more so with addicts who's usual ROA is IV/IM and physiological response experienced during the stages of getting the equipment out the cupboard, sterilising them all, getting the rig ready, etc, etc can be just a exciting/euphoric/blah as the effects of the drug itself.

This anticipation - whether it be caused by a drug addiction and hence the [sometimes] unbearable craving for your DOC, or as BrainstormWithJace stated anticipation of nausea caused by chemo treatments - has a specific, technical term. But for the life of me, what being 4:17am at the moment, I cannot remember what it is.

(Well I personally find addiction in general an) extremely interesting topic!

Edit : I'm pretty confident there a specific word used to describe what the OP is talking about but I may be getting myself confused with the 3 stages used to categorise addiction (Binge/Intoxication, Preoccupation/Anticipation, and Withdrawal/Negative Effects). I'm sure someone more knowledgeable then I would know! ;) :)

Yea man i was thinking the exact same thing. Thats insane!

Im a big fan of the anticipation aspect of drug use. Many times i will play with myself (emotionally) and slowly grind down the pill, slowly make nice perfect lines and just try to take as much time as possible before i actually snort it just because its fun to me and i feel like it completes the whole experience. When the drug finally does get in your system its all that much better. ;)

So I'm not the only one that takes 10 minutes to chop up pills lol (I used to do the same thing with x tabs when I rolled). I refuse to snort anything that hasn't been chopped down to a molecular level lol.

oh and BTW- im glad you point out (emotionally) cause at first I thought, well, you know. 8(

I used to get real MDMA in the 80's while it was still legal in these giant pink capsules, I would just open the capsules and dump it on my tongue. There was no mistaking the taste of real mdma, it would almost sizzle on my tongue. I won't even try any of what passes for mdma these days. haven't even tried since the 80's .

After a bad OD on methyphenidate, if I started reading about stimulants, or anything to do with it.
My heart would start pounding, and felt like I was having panic attacks when just thinking about it.

That was an extremely uncomfortable 2 weeks.

This also reminds me of that study shown, where cocaine users could look at images of cocaine, and actually get the effects for of it for a really short time, sorta like a taste-tester, saying "mmm, come get me!" the body would erge them on.
So the body did anticipate cocaine, this was scientifically proven, and normal cocaine-like effects would come on.

Pretty cool, but must suck for addiction, just looking at cocaine and feeling that urge, must suck.

I wasn't even a tadpole swimming in my dad's scrot then...or an unfertilized ovum in my mom's uterus for that matter lmao...

"Back in my day we had this...."

Ya...well...drugs went to shit by the time I got to them and I made due with what I had lol. And some pure (at least I would think it is as it's unwashed and still got a yellowish tinge to it) still floats around from time to time.
