Hi Folks! After my doctor went on maternity leave I started using GP Access for my pain management for my spinal fusion. Well I discovered that I had been flagged as a prescription/doctor shopper after seeing 6 different GP's. Now I have a new doctor and she offered to write me an authority script for a double batch of Oxycontin. Now if she calls medicare to get the authority is it possible medicare will tell her I was doctor shopping?

What actually is the process for the doctor to get the script authority? Can medicare disclose that info or is the doctor shopping section of medicare separate? I really need the double batch of my meds but If she finds out that I had been flagged she will cut me off. Anybody have any idea about this dilemma? I had no idea how easy it was to get flagged.

Also after being flagged as a doctor shopper, can you get off the list if you stop or is it a permanent thing?

Thanks dudes!

To get an authority for that it will have to be phone approval; that is, calling up Medicare. Depending on how the Drugs of Dependence Unit in NSW operates, they may have already added this to your Medicare files in case something like this happens. It seems more likely to me though that the DDU just knows about your doctor shopping, and that when the script gets sent in to them (all S8 scripts have to be sent off to the state DDU), they will pick up on it and contact the doctor.

Also, in most states I believe there has to be an authority given from the chief of the State Health Department. This may only apply to certain medications, I live in QLD and so am only familiar with our regulations and also am chilling out on Xanax and so memory may be hazy.

I will find out some more information for you tomorrow, will try and update this thread from my iPhone. Also, lets not let this thread become about tips on doctor shopping.

^ Ha ha, cheers. :)

I had to take a break from BL for health reasons but I'm back now. I think there is some other thread on here where people are claiming the doctor shopping flag only lasts a few months... again though, memory is slightly hazy right now...

^ Had a bit of a problem with Xanax. I have a two month gap in my memory where I broke up with my girlfriend when she flushed my tablets, generally went crazy and abused the fuck out of some people and ended up being kicked out of my house then went to hospital for detox. Then I escaped from the hospital and acquired some clonazepam to taper myself as the stupid fucking hospital confiscated my reading material. :\

Luckily, even though I was blacked out, I managed to keep this compartmentalized from my job mostly otherwise my career would be fucked.

Were you flagged as a prescription/doctor shopper JUST for seeing 6 different doctors?

Or were you getting meds from them as well?

SoWhat, I removed your post as there is no need to brag about those kind of exploits.

I haven't been able to find out how long they keep you on the list for, but I imagine it would be for quite a while on Medicare as they keep all your PBS info on there. As for private scripts that have been caught by the DDU of your state, no idea; two to three years is how long Project Stop keeps records for, and in QLD Project Stop is a sub-department of the DDU as far as I'm aware.

It wasn't an attempt to brag, moreso highlighting the shortcomings of the current Presription Framework.....im on a Benzo blacklist that is National and permanent....so i don't know how it works given confidentiality laws but i know im on it because ive been questioned about it. Im so restricted my parents have to pick up my Valium scripts, the pharmacy wont dispense them to me....:S

^ It isn't a blacklist so much as it is a note added to your Medicare and DDU records to doctors so that they use caution when considering whether to prescribe you a benzodiazepine. I imagine that you aren't located in QLD, as in this state the DDU doesn't handle benzodiazepines. In some other states they are handled by that unit, and many pharmacies will be required to take your date of birth similar to S8 scripts.

Regarding the removed post; it was more about your information on how to approach the doctor that I thought was unnecessary.
